My GX620 (whitebook version) is approaching 3 years of age. It does everything I need it to do so there's really no need to get a more powerful machine. The problem I have with it is that the screen's brightness has degraded to the point where I get serious eye strain after more than 30 min of use. Now, can I buy a "good quality" lcd panel of the same size and just put it in?

Yes, you can swap the screen. Many of the older Dell screens will fit. Up to 1920x1200.

Do you have a recommendation Kirr? I see a lot of places selling them online for really cheap. I would prefer a 1440x900 and up, but it needs to have good brightness and good color (black/white contrast). Willing to pay more for good quality ones.

I have no personal experiences, but one of my friends swap it for a D800 screen. (the wuxga one) So that screen works. Just remember that the aspect ratio is 16 by 10 and this notebook can't use LED screens.

Thanks for the help Kirr. I'm noticing that there are very little information on these LCD reseller sites. The only criteria that they list as matching for the GX620 are:

    physical size: 13.1'' x 8.2''
    Backlight: CCFL 1 bulb

They don't even list the part number or specs

If I get one that's just as bad as the stock version I'm screwed lol. This is becoming very risky.

    Edit:

Looks like the inverter controls the brightness of the LCD, and that part is very hard to get to and it costs $80 on top of the LCD screen. I don't think this upgrade is gonna be worthwhile now
