Hi guys, I'm from the Philippines. I found out that my GX660 i5 has and i5 520m (ES) Engineering Sample cpu. Then I asked Intel about it and told me to contact my local seller or MSI phil. They responded and told me that they will replace it with i5 480m CPU. Is i5 480m better than i5 520m?

Im a little bit confused because 2weeks ago I read an article regarding Engineering sample processors sold on ebay and 4 engineers got arrested for selling. From my curiosity I opened Lavalyst Everest and latest CPUID software, I noticed that my processor is ES also. I downloaded Intel Processor ID Utility and confirmed it is really ES processor. So I leaved a message to Intel regarding what i found and a representative from Intel Hongkong called me. He ask some informations about my laptop and told me to contact my local retailer and MSI. MSI Philippines apologized and agreed to replace my i5 520m to i5 480m. Today, Intel Philippines called me and asked me not to go directly to MSI and have my unit brought to Intel Manila for the reason that they might keep the ES processor. My unit is still under warranty. Intel told me they will be the one to arrange with MSI about the warranty of my laptop. Why is it that Intel needed so badly this Engineering Sample processors? So guys where do you think should I go first?

Honestly I would not care if I have ES QS or OEM if it runs all good and all well no crashes or overheating etc etc, but because you aim for original OEM cpu just for legal purposes, you should do as intel says, just make sure before you do all this they guarantee you wait no time without your laptop. In other words I think you only are causing bother to yourself. I would really not care if my ES cpu is in my system if it works well I would be happy enough and would not even have an idea go complain somewhere.

Its truly up to you what would you do, you have your head and can make your own decisions in life for once in a while, its not much to think off.

PS. I have used few ES CPUs in my past and had only great experience with those, never had a problem, and Im in no way affiliated with intel, but Im aware what intel says on their policy, that ES CPUs are the property of intel so in other words if they would catch everyone with ES or QS CUS and confiscate all those CPUs I can nearly guarantee more than 25% of PC enthusiasts would be left without computers. Luckily this will never ever happen unless you would be keen enough to waste your time and effort and money of course contacting and making confessions to intel... makes no sense to me

    No offence

    BR

thanks ultragsm. if intel will replace my processor to higher one then i will just give the es processor to them.. but if they will replace it with similar one then i will just ignore them.. thanks. =)

i5-480m is better than i5-520m. If they want to exchange it for you, than go for it. 480 is 2,66GHz and 520 is 2,4GHz. Numbers speask for themselves. Both of them are 3MB cache.

the numbers speak so much for themselves that the difference is so so HUGE you WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO NOTICE! :D unless you code in turbo pascal and measure milliseconds in assembling the code ... LOL ... Im sorry for the sarcasm, I just couldn't resist

Do anyone know if i can ''upgrade'' my GT663 to GT663 R? I have read that you guys have upgrade it. But i havent read anyone tried to upgrade a gt663. Btw, is it worth to have 2 ssd in raid with SATA 2? And how does setFSB work? I think i have fund my PLL. If the GX660 and GT663 have the same PLL it is the right one. But nothing happens when i try to use it.

I used 2x256GB world fastest SSDs OCZ vertex 4, achieved read and write speeds of 500MBps only due to limitation of SATA2 speed per channel, so, in real world it is just 1-2 seconds quicker loading massive data files, like working with DVD sampling editing etc etc, but if you can wait 1-2 sec extra just use 1 vertex2 cheap OCZ SSD and it will be like faster than 2x7200rpm RAID0 in your system and use other HDD drive as storage etc. Just my experience

    PLL should be under GPU
you activate it by hitting TURBO button - without it its not activate

Okey, So i click at the turbo button and then overclock with setFSB? I did that and the computer freezed.
And what do you mean ''PLL should be under GPU''? So my PLL i different because i dont have a hd5870m?

Hello, everybody. I'm so pleased to see this thread is still alive after all this time. It's a proof of GX 660 reliability! Although I bought another laptop with higher specs some months ago, I must say I still have my GX 660R-060 US, completely stock, working like a charm and running cool (CPU tops at 64C, GPU at 56C (!), and I'm back in Brazil, living in Recife, with temps at around 30C). It's by far the strongest piece of technology I've ever owned. It's still gaming like hell after solid 18 months of energic daily use. In fact I use it much more than the other one, which demands long cool down times.
Would like to thank Rizeki and Forge once again, as they were (and still are) the ones whose opinions and suggestions are always quite valuable.
Have a good one, you all.

Btw, to use setFSB should i disable intel speed step? Because if I have in on it goes ip to 2,79ghz and if i disable it the cores stay at 2,53ghz.

You may as from dual core to quad core with 8 threads may give some boost, but very minor, better get 920xm cpu and 7970m and you will forget about any problems on any games ;)

yeah, i know you recommend 7970m with 920xm ;) But Im gonna sell it when intel haswell is released :) So I want to save all the money to my new pc build :D So i want to do a ''cheap'' upgrade. Ofc it needs to be a upgrade. 920xm cost like 2500SEK and a 720qm is like 500SEK. But how much will the fps increasy do you think?

then if you count 3% increase in performance is worth the hasle go for it. and after a year your current cofig will be even less valuable, prices are dropping for old stuff every year around, so better not to invest at all so less will be lost.

As UltraGSM said, I do recommend a full CPU upgrade, otherwise it will hardly matter. 720qm is too downclocked to be fully utilized as a quad core solution, so games like Skyrim actually perform lower than they should. I think 820qm should be adecuate but it also costs similar to QS version of 920xm.

Besides having a 920xm lifts the value of your machine when you sell it! :)

Seriously only 3%? But a 920xm is at 2ghz? And 720qm 1,6ghz? So is 920xm so much better?
Okey, but i dont know xD 2500SEK it almost to much. But i do want a quad core... This is a hard choice. If i can find someone sell a 920xm that would be good. But that is not so easy to find.

The thing is, 920xm is unlocked so it is easily overclocked to 2.4ghz of you want, increasing performance drastically. Even at 2.13ghz (turbo stoclk 4 cores) it is quite faster than 720qm.

Try to find the cheaper QS version. If it's too expensive, you can try 820qm which should be a good compromise on stock. I used 740qm and then 920xm and I would not go back ever. Then again gamingwise only like half of my games received a boost, and only few received a massive boost. I keep mentioning skyrim because it went from around 30fps to 50fps from cpu alone. Battlefield 3 also increases performances dramatically from dual core to quad core.

But I understand your point and maybe not upgrading anything is the best course, to save more money.

    Hi, filip.
Well, I use some extra cooling solutions. I posted here some months ago to share my madness with the cats :)

    1) I use my lappy with bottom removed. Of course this is impossible on the go, like in the train or something, but everytime I have a table to place the machine, I remove the bottom. I never play games in the train, so every time I'm playing, bottom is off. I had to manage to fix the fan in place, because there are some screws that depends on the bottom to fix the fan. But everything worked very well.

    2) I use a cooling pad, with 3 fans. This one I don't carry on, but temps are just about 3 degrees higher without it. The bottom line is bottom off is amazing :p when it comes to cool down the laptop.

    3) I always have Turbo Fan on when gaming.

That's it. Thermal paste is still stock. I tried to change it, but had a "unscrweable" screw, so before I could make a mess, I left it alone.

Maybe I got lucky with my unit, too. What I know is that I play all modern demanding games, Like BF3, BC2, Ghost Recon Future Soldier, Arma ll, Max Payne 3, etc. That 64C is only when I play MoH 2010. I don't know why this particular game makes my CPU hotter than the others. Playing those mentioned before, I rarely achieve 60C.
I recommend removing the bottom to anyone. Buy some extra air cans to clean the laptop and be happy!
    Have a good one!

Okey, so you have an dual core first? Then 740qm and after that 920xm? How much did the fps increasy in battlefield 3? And how much did the temps change?

I have not make my choich if im gonna upgrade or buy an new clevo 17 inch with i7 3610qm and 7970m. Or wait until haswell will be realeased. I have uppgraded it if it was a 17 inch screen :/ 15,6 is to small. But yeah i can buy a extern screen and plug it into the hdmi and buy a keyboard. But if do that i can just buy me an desktop pc.

Oh, okey :) That explain a lot to me xD I use a cooler master u2 and it is amazing :) But i dont think i will remove the bottom xD

For more info regarding battlefield 3, check reviews where they test CPU core usage. There are some in anandtech and Tomshardware I think. It scales with 1, 2, 3 and 4 cores. It's one of those few games that you need a quad core to not bottleneck your graphics card, or maybe a dual core so insanely clocked it will run ok.

Yeah I upgraded to a 17inch because I prefer the big screen, plus I got another laptop for my work so now I use mine only for gaming and entertainment.

I say that haswell will be a powerful upgrade, but I think you should question exactly what you want in a machine. Core i7 3610qm is so much more powerful than your current CPU and even my super overclocked core i7920xm cant keep up with it. Games have 0 issues with these current quads, and 7970m and GTX680m are quite powerful GPUs right now.

Waiting for haswell might be yet another year, and while you wait, new GPUs will be announced, and then you will want to wait for that, it becomes a silly cycle. I say buy what you can, that provides a sizeable increase in performance. Personally, I buy computers or upgrades when the end product has a 100% increase in performance, or close to it. Hence why I waited on HD6990m and GTX580m, while powerful, I wanted even more.

920xm gave me over 50% (when overclocked) performance gain, so it made sense to me.

Anyways a 3610qm with HD7970m sounds like a pretty powerful machine. I would advise to wait on the Sager/clevo or to get the NP9370 that has enduro disabled and capability for dual HD7970m. Other clevos with Enduro have issues with AMD HD7970m performing subpar.

I can overclock my cpu in bios to 3463mhz with no crashes and no throttle. But the ''fun'' part it apper that i have internet lagg! I have a very good internet. I download like 11mbits.
But I mean a desktop computer with intel haswell and a amd hd 8000(8970?). I want to but clevos dual gpu laptop buy what i have heard they will only sell it with a ivy bridge i7 extreme cpu. And they are not cheap. A i7 3610qm would that bottleneck dual 7970m?

EDIT: I just checked what p370em cost xD That is to expensive for me then xD It cost like 2000 euro xD

Hello again. Will this card work in GX660R ? The seller said it came from Alienware M18X. Will there be any problems installing this card ? And if not, than is it a good combination i7 740qm and 6990M ? ( I've had Dell Precision M6600 in the past with i7 2720qm and 6970M, the processor in BF3 was used in 60-70% so 2720qm was too much for 6970m ).

    what ssd
    yes it will works
bf3 not use 100% cpu in quad cpu :)
sometimes 740qm can block gpu - and yes in bf3 he can block but do you have money to buy 920xm ?
crysis and crysis warhead like fast quad cpu - in these games you can see that gpu is blocked by slow cpu very often :/

No. I do not have money for 920xm. I can buy 840qm at most. Will the 840qm be enough for 6990m ? And is the price 400$ rather cheap or rather expensive for 6990m ?

Hello everyone, I would just like to share a cooling mod I did to my GX660

I am in the process of upgrading everything in this laptop to give it new life so I bought a 940xm and im ordering a 7970m in a week. Not that it needs it since it could play all the games I threw at it at 30+fps at native 1366.

My 940xm came about a week ago and it was a heater. It would reach 99c in 30 minutes at multiplier 20 for 4cores. So I decided to fabricate a heatsink out of scrap aluminum and copper from work.

With this mod I could increase the multiplier to 21 and temps would stay at 85-86C. At multiplier 22 temps would hover around 90-93C. However temps for the gpu increased by around 4C its be around 86-87c.

The idle temps would hit 39c for the cpu at 26c room temp haha.

Pics of the mod. All i used to make this was a dremmel and basic tools. the materials are copper and aluminum.

Any comments and criticism are welcome....this mod may work with the newer models.

nice mod - Im also thinking [and even do similar but with worse smooth sheet with lacquer and not really works because isnt good distributed heat] about this but i personally want to remove that cover from fan and replace with new scrap of copper to get the best distribution of heat from gpu and cpu but need time and of course big scrap of copper and also thin to use original screws from fan
also im not sure how to connect [possible with some screws] to gpu/cpu heatsink to easily remove when i need to do something :)
im also thinking to connect radiator with that metal on the fan and make some additional heatsink from copper inside fan maximize of area of spreding heat :)

that sound really bad - im also thinking about some XM for gt660 and 6990m [now 720qm for hmm 70 dollars or less] but if i get less than 3GHz on 3-4cores thats bad :/
maybe something wrong with paste ? too much or too weak ? because you get really too high temp for only 20multipler

also personally don't like your mod of bottom of laptop - too big hole ... but im used really often on legs then i cannot make so big hole for fan - then i drill holes directly under fan and its good and i can still use it on legs without any protection for fan :)
    sorry for bad english

Hi! I just read this after spending two days trying to get my SSD to work. I got really happy since it's exactly the same problem i'm having with my new Samsung 830 SSD.

Then i read the topic and it talks about the "GX660R" model. I own the GT660 version =(

Please tell me this BIOS will work anyway?

The the application and the paste itself (formula 7) is fine. my 940xm is a qs sample so its probably just the cpu itself. I can hit 3.5 on all 4 cores and play nicely indefinately at cooler room temps 18c and with the use a laptop cooler which i custom built. at 3ghz the laptop by itself doesnt need assistance in keeping temps around 87-90c which i consider safe. (ive been playing with my g50vtx5 94c cpu and 97c gpu constantly since 2009 and its perfectly fine till now).

I agree the bottom cover plate is not what i wanted it to be. It used to be just a 3in diameter circle but this heatsink really needs to be exposed to the atmosphere in order for it to work.

    Hello,

I have the GX660r Model: MS-16F1, and bought a samsung 830 ssd. I am Trying to get it to work in AHCI. And I used the Custom Bios by UltraGSM. Now comes the Funny part: it works in IDE. And it even recognizes the SSD in the BIOS while AHCI is activated. My problem starts when Windows is starting. In the "Windows ist starting"-screen where those balls fly around a bluescreen flashes, so fast I cant read it, and the notebook starts to reboot. I did the Hotplug and portmultiplier thing and the RAM is now @ 1333Mhz but the drive wont work in AHCI. Does Anyone know what I might try? UltraGSM you have helped so many people, care to do it once more? I would apreciate it very much.

    Some Data that might Help:

-The Notebook is Stock, I just swicthed the drives, its the samsung 830 SSD with 128gb of Storage and a WD Scorpio Black with 750gb of Storage.
-There is a Clean Windows 7 Professional SP1 Install on the SSD

    Please Help me you people!

Hello again. I am a happy owner of GX660 with 6990m inside. Unfortunatelly, my card is a Clevo 6990m and I do not have sound through HDMI. Does anyone have a vBios from Dell 6990m which works on Clevo card allowing sound through HDMI ?

Hi everyone. I own a MS-16F1 barebone equipped with a gtx-460m and want to upgrade to a 7970m. I'm trying to source a heatsink for it from my local service center, but they're asking me for a serial number of my laptop. I told them it was a GX-660 to get a 5870m heatsink, but if I give them the serial number on my device they'll surely say something is fishy.
Can any owner of a GX660 supply me with the serial number written on the bottom of their laptop?

It should look something like this:

    sn-nb.jpg

Also, it should be located on the case under the battery. Just remove the battery and it should be there.

They want the serial number because there is a very limited stock of the GX660 / 5870M heatsinks. I spoke directly with MSI UK, and they could not sell me one, simply because they are holding them back for warranty repairs.

They are almost impossible to find. RK Computers-MSI-Asus-Sager-Clevo-Compal - Custom Gaming Notebooks - Custom Gaming Laptops told me to come back in a couple of months.
