I was thinking of getting a 6970m for this laptop and trying to see if I could get it to work, but I'm not savy with anything outside of installing hardware. I think the 6970m could work, at least with a more powerful power supply brick. The 5870m under load and OC to 860/1025 with the turbo fan doesn't even break 64C for me. If it were guaranteed to work, I would get one from mxmupgrade.

Really? I talked to them a couple weeks ago, and nobody had done it yet. Do they have any details on it? If it requires little to no modification to the heatsink I'd be down to get it. I'll have to email them again.

You hit the nail on the head. HP is useless. It's strong point is the ability to overheat and die :D

Sorry for butting in, but anyway...I didn't update BIOS; and in my opinion it should be done only to solve an issue.
MSI Live Upadate didn't work for me when I tested it, so I downloaded ATI CCC directly from ATI site.

Well I might be using it more often now too. I just grabbed an OEM 920xm off ebay for around $400, and have a Targus 180w power adapter coming too. I think the 55w CPU might require me to use it during gaming to keep the temps lower, but I don't know yet. Figured I might as well squeeze as much life out of this laptop as I can, and I want it to be ready for BF3.

Can the laptop actually use the extra power from the PSU? What's the model number of the Targus? Are there any other cheaper PSU that I can use?

If your upgrading your CPU to the 920 or 940xm chips then yes it can use the extra power from the psu. But the 150 psu is fine for it being stock.

I need some advice. I want to upgrade the Memory RAMs on the laptop. Any good recommendations on which brand an which model or memory stick i should go? I was thinking upgrading it to like 12 GB (double the current capacity).

DDR3 ram is the one to get. The brands I would use are Kington, corsair, crucial. However where does the third stick go?

I am thinking about upgrading to the ati 6970m also so what's a good cheap PSU to buy?

Thanks for the reply but what about the pins (200 or 204 ...) and the PCs 2700 or 5300 ... ?? I'm not familiar with that. I'll go with the branded ones for reliability.

    I upgraded from a i5 to i7 920XM. i am using Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste.

I am running Prime95 and I am getting the following temps after 10 mins:
    Core 1 70c
    Core 2 78c
    Core 3 76c
    Core 4 86c

    Are these readings ok?
How long should I run Prime95?

I'd say you are ok with those temps. Were you running the turbo fan? I just upgraded to an i7 920xm OEM yesterday. I ran Prime 95 for 4mins too, and I hit
    Core 1 84C
    Core 2 86C
    Core 3 85C
    Core 4 90C

I did not hit the turbo fan button, but I think that those temps activate it anyways. I think I may need to repaste. The CPU came with a new tube of ICD7 and I've never used it before, so I'm assuming I might have used too much and I need to repaste. In game load temps usually top out at around 78-80C. Even with those temps I'm not worried because this CPU is a beast and it draws a lot more power than the i5 the laptop came with. But the CPU is amazingly fast. BC2 on high settings 1080p runs 60-80FPS avg.

What are you idle temps? I'm idling
    Core 1 53
    Core 2 54
    Core 3 55
    Core 4 52

    Hello everyone,
I'm trying to reduce buzzing sound from my speakers. I found out that removing keyboard reduces it almost completly. Now I'm trying to reduce vibrations between keybord and the chassis.
Can I use double sided tape for that? Or mayby insulation tape would be a better idea?
If I cover bottom of the keyboard in insulation tape will I risk it to be damaged?
Anyone knows what temp. insulation tape can sustain?
Or mayby you have better idea how to fix it?
    Sorry for my english.

I don't use the turbo fan but it automatically kicks in after about 30 seconds of Prime95. I noticed that if I actually stopped using the laptop whilst Prime95 is running, the temperature readings are 3c lower!! I think you need to repaste as when I repasted mine the temperature went down. I have repasted mine 3 times now. I am getting Arctic MX4 and I will repaste again as I have been told that Arctic Silver 5 is getting very old now.

My idle values are 48 48 52 52. I will check again tonight.

I had an improvement in Splinter Cell Conviction. The logo screen and title menu would freeze badly on start-up but now its all very smooth.

What other games are CPU dependent?

I'm also idle at 49-51 with Throttlestop on.
Are you guys using throttlestop with your temps? If so, at what ratios?
I'm at 25/25/25/25 and when gaming, I reach around 79C with Turbofan.

Uyski, how do I overclock with throttle stop? Now my temps are idling at 49-52C. I think I may still repaste later though to see if I can get the temps a bit lower.

I am in little dilemna. I was witing since Christmas for the new MSI gaming laptop, the MSI GX/T 680.

No the MSI GT680 is here available were I live, it costs 1500 euro's. It has 1 TB, 8GB, Nvidea 460M and the new sandy bridge processor i7 2630QM.
However now there is also a last minute sale of the MSI GX660. It is available for 1000 euro's. It has 500GB, 4GB, the Ati 5870M and the Intel Core i7 740QM.

So the major difference are the CPU. Do you think it is worth it to go for the sandy bridge? It seems that that the sandy bridge is about 10-15% faster. But what maybe more important is, is the internal GPU in the sandy bridge I7.

Also I am wondering if the battery time is taking a big hit with the I7 740QM in comparison with the sandy bridge I7. According to this review, the GT680 has a battery life of about 4 hours while surfing on the WLAN.
Does the MSI GX660 with the i7 740QM has about the same battery life?

Regarding to temps and repasting, you must remember that all thermal compounds have a period of cure to reach their peaks. Artic Silver 5, for instance, needs 200 (!) hours to achieve its best cooling point. My advice is: repaste if you want to, but give the compound a break in time before jumping the gun and repasting again. My unit has stock thermal compound, and after 2 months the lappy is running cooler than it was in the first weeks.
I e-mailed MSI to ask about Fan durability, and they answered me saying they stressed the fan for long periods before releasing the feature. Turbo Fan is safe and saves a lot of heat headache, so no need to worry about wearing the fan out. MSI GX660, "R" or not, -060 or -053, are reliable machines. IMO.

When I took the heatsink off for previous repastes I noticed that in the middle of the copper there was no thermal paste. I can see the copper perfectly. On the CPU in the middle was the same thing! What does this mean?

Download throttlestop, and adjust TRL to 24/24/24/24. Try that first, and increase if you can manage that. You also have to adjust TPL. I have W(100) and A(80).

What kind of PSU do you have btw? I'm using a 180W psu from ebay, costed like 40$ :D

Thanks! I'm using a Targus/LiteOn 180w that I picked up off of ebay for $25 :D It came with a few different adapters, and luckily one of the 3 works perfectly :D
It seems my temps have come down about 5C since I first pasted a few days ago. I'm thinking I may have not applied adequate pressure to the heatsink after I applied it, but who knows. I will give it a few more weeks to see if things improve, or if it really bothers me that much before I decide to break it down again to repaste.

I'm having trouble changing the brightness level of the screen.

Normally it's fine. If I press Alt-Up/Down I can alter the brightness levels without any difficulty. However, if I close the lid and then reopen it this keyboard command stops working and I have to restart to get it to start working again.

Does anyone know what might be causing the problem?

I'm also having trouble with the sound.

When I first got the laptop about two weeks ago the sound was fine. Now it's really muffled. It's like the treble has been turned down and the bass turned up. Perhaps something has blown?

edit- Apparently one of the volume levels had been turned down

    Not sure how that happened.

I have a Belkin Messenger, the 17" version, and the GX660R fits perfectly. Not sure a 17" laptop would fit.

I got my GX660R yesterday and have to say I am very very happy with it. Played Rift on my 40" TV last night and it looked, and ran, sweetly.

I'm not sure if my standards are low or some peoples standards here are very high but the screen is fine for me. Yes if I view from an angle it's a bit crap but I plan on viewing it from head on most of the time.

Trying to work out how to get the 3 lights round the trackpad working. I think I am missing something obvious :D
