Known issue with no reported fix. Happens on cold boot for me almost everytime. Used to it now so not overly concerned :)

The ATI High Definition Audio in the devices is shown as High Definition Audio.
When I plug the the laptop via HDMI into my amp I only get 2 channel sound. Before I wiped the laptop hdd I was getting 5.1 channel sound.

I need to update the driver but can someone tell me where to download it from?

Yeah, probably true.. SC2 runs OK in Ultra.. 50-60fps normal.. 30-35fps in big battles and so on..

Shall try GTA 4 again later..

Is there no-one here who have trouble with the gaming mouse but me? :p

My friend also got MSI with same mouse and he got the same issue..

    That it dies randomly..

Just so everyone knows, the problem doesn't appear on Intel-based SSDs.

To be honest, though, you shouldn't need to disable AHCI to get your SSD to work.

Oh well. Each laptop has its quirks.

Ok? I've read somewhere that u had to disable AHCI to get max performance from the SSD?

Anyhow a friend tested C300 in a ASUS g53 earlier and it suffers from random bluescreens on boot(like 1/5 boots).. no problem when it actually boots though :p

Also a friend got the same issue.. like 2fps less than without turbo :p

So i always play without turbo.. :)

Just tried a 3dmark2006 to compaire.

    Gaming mode:
    CPU: 2800
    GFX: 825/1025
    Result = 13286

    Turbo mode:
    CPU: 2933
    GFX: 825/1025
    Result = 13688

I my case its a bit faster in turbo mode..

Linaa, what there the separate scores? It might be the CPU score was significantly increased due to the overclock, but the GPU scores were slightly lowered.

I remember there was a probably explanation of this on one of the threads, but I can't remember. Something about the overclock only affecting one core and hurting multi-threaded games or something. don't quote me on that, though.

Turbo mode overclocks one core and becomes a higher clocked single core machine. On single threads, it will be faster, on multithreads it will lower your scores. In benchmarks, you will score higher, but on games, most of the time you will have a bit lower fps.

It also affects max fps, reducing vsync frames from 59/60 to 56 or something odd like that. Same for 30fps, becomes 28 fps.

Generally, it is worse to use turbo on newer games, while it does help on lower slightly threaded games, like in Cryostasis where it really helped.

I am also wondering if the mxmupgrade 6970 type b is compatible? I know our 5870s are type b, so I'm wondering if I could just swap and replace? Anyone tried this yet? I'm willing to buy it to try it out if its got a chance at working. Would it require me to know how to edit bios or whatnot? If thats required that would be a no go for me since I don't have any practice with that kind of stuff.

does anyone here play just cause 2? i got it yesterday and with everything maxed aprt from the last 2 settings (which im not sure what they do?) at 1080p was only getting an average 30fps, dropping down to below 20 at times. would be interested to know what setting others are using? this is only the 2nd game that wont max out on this laptop so far, the first being nap total war.

Well it sure can max out most games but not at playable fps xD

A few games that is not playable at max i´ve tried:

    1. Starcraft 2 (Playable with few units in max but in bigger fights the 5870 surrenders :))

    2. Bulletstorm .. Tried at highest and sure.. but i don't think 30fps is playable

    3. Minecraft xD lags a lot (Like 15fps) at highest viewdistance ^^

    4. GTA IV - Plays at 1366x768 and High .. But visibility on like 30.. Not smooth all the time though :)

So far.. but i´ve not tried so many games..

    Edit:

    Ok I did a little comparison with my old laptop .. AMD X2 1.9GHz + Geforce 8600GS 512mb

    VS Intel core i5 , Ati radeon 5870 1024mb

    Minecraft results:

    Old: 54FPS Max viewdistance

    New MSI: 14FPS Max viewdistance

Lol! can it be that ATI sucks at these kinds of games? .. Im considering swapping it for a GT660 with Nvidia card.. For the minecraft performance :)

To achieve playable/good FPS in starcraft 2 big battle, you need a very powerful processor. SC2 is very cpu demanding.

Issue 1: I am not sure if the power supply can handle the more power demanding 6970.

Issue 2: you will definitely need a new bio provided by Msi / someone for this new card. A site has upgraded the Clevo laptop to 6970m with modified bio.

hmm u just got me thinking.
i have this btw and have all setting maxed at 1080p and plays very smooth but i havent been monorting the fps
    ill check and post results
EDIT: hmm so it runs at about 35-60 fps and in big firefights stay around 30 wiv ocasial dips to 25 but is still smooth. i akso have mods-HD CLOUDS and HD STARS AND MOON -and some texture mods so umm yeh

also ^^^ starcraft plays fine on ultra at 1080p in medium big battles but drops wen it gets even bigger. but i reccomend playin at a lower res 1600 x 900
however somthing is up wth your minecraft results as i dont even get dipps that low

Well sure u maybe gain 1-5 FPS but that doesnt make it worth the price difference :p

I Guess that ATI has some issues with minecraft.. guess u have the i7.. i got the i5.. But it should kick my old AMDX2 1,9Ghz though :D

    I've got a fresh installed windows 7

    I've tried reinstalling Java6.. also tried the Java7 beta.. didn't help :|

Also one irritating bug with the 5870 is the delay when u tab down Star2 .. goes very quick.. but when u tab up.. takes long time to get the game up again..

But this issue is known at dekstop radeon cards too so nothing new :)

    I have a problem with my gx660.
sometimes when my laptop turns off display(scheduled in power management settings), the screen won't return, the screen stays blank and can't do anything but push the power button to restart.
    what could be the problem?

    Hi guys

I newbie question, does the GX660R eSATA support port multiplier?

Coz i just bought Thermaltake Blacx Duet and was hopping i could use 2 hdd using the eSATA but apparently i can't, but it is ok with USB.

You can put 920xm/940xm in this laptop.
The 920xm (QS Version) Is alot of cheaper. I bought it for around 300 on ebay.
    In 3dmark my 460m scored 2900, but my 920xm overclocked scores around 5800 :)

Has anyone had an issue with the USB ports in their GX660R?

I regularly use my laptop while away for long business trips to keep me entertained during otherwise dull hotel evenings and I've had an issue crop up a few times with the USB ports.

Sometimes after unplugging/plugging a flash drive or USB HDD, some of the ports simply stop recognizing any new devices. I can plug something in (to either the USB 3 or USB 2) and it will charge but I cannot access the device nor does it appear in device manager.

typically I have a Lacie Rikiki USb 3.0 1TB drive plugged into one of the USB 3.0 ports, an optical mouse (Logitech MX518) on the single usb 2.0 port on the right and the remaining two ports on the left are usually taken up by a SanDisk Cruzer USb stick and/or a an iPhone4 on charge.

When the issue occurs, whatever is still plugged in remains functioning with no issues but any new devices plugged in won't be recognized.

Any experience or resolutions for this?

In big battle, reflections, physics and effects will hinder your performance as they are heavy cpu hitter. An i5 clock speed is not good enough for such big battle when it involves so many effects processing at the same time. Your rather low GTA4 performance is another indication that illustrates the problem (GTA4 is another high cpu demanding game as well).

One of the player is suffering low fps playing starcraft in big battle but he is playing with desktop with the following specification.

CPU - AMD Phenom II 940 3.0ghz quadcore
    Memory - 8gb DDR2 800
    GPU - EVGA Geforce GTX 570 (driver - 263.09)

During large mid to late game battles, he was only able to achieve as low at 10/15 fps. He lowered the reflections, physics and effects setting and his fps raised to 20/25.

    1-5 fps gain ?

Do you consider the DESKTOP GTX 570 (Nvidia second fastest single GPU as of Dec, 2010) a good enough upgrade over 5870m ?

In your sentiment, the cost to performance ratio is rather low. However, it does not justify the benefits of upgrading for Starcraft 2 / GTA4.

Starcraft 2 only utilizes 2 cores instead of 4, so upgrading to a lower clocked quad core is meaningless. But high level i7 also come with a very high clock speed/better performance.

First off is that laptop laying flat? Do you have the vents block on the bottom by sitting on a bed or something? That is way hot, you souldnt be seeing temps like that out of this laptop if its a gx660. Have you repasted the GPU and CPU? We need some ideas why you have temps that high.

It is laying on the hard surface of my desk with plenty of room cleared around the vents. These temps were recorded while I was playing Battlefield: Bad Company 2. I've had the laptop since September and it was working fine for a while. I noticed the fan was kicking on more frequently within the past month or so, even when doing simple tasks such as browsing the internet. I used to see much cooler temps in the CPU but now when just browsing I can see the temps bouncing between 70-80ish. But it's when I'm running any game that I noticed after about 15 minutes it would seem to start lagging, and it led me to believe the temps were way too hot so I started keeping an eye on them. Now I'm just not gaming because it gets too hot.

I think I'll just need to RMA it, I just have to wait until this semester is over at school.

Also, I noticed that gradient colors aren't as smooth as they should be. I first noticed this in December. I'm pretty sure I have a bad GPU :(.

No I wouldnt say your GPU is bad. I would say you need to take the bottom cover off and take the fan out of it which is like 3 screws and one cable and clean out your fan and heat sink first. If the problem is still happening then, yes RMA it for a repaste most likely. They may replace the GPU or they may just repaste both the both the CPU and GPU. You need to upate the BIOS also if you havent to the newest version. You need to down load the newst driver for your GPU also. Try cleaning out the fan and heat sink, which is very easy to before you spend the cost of shipping for a RMA.

Like what Lurch said, I don't think it's a bad GPU. Looks like a horribad paste job plus lots of dust clogging the vents.

Do what Lurch suggested, namely blasting the radiators with canned air to get all the junk out. If the temperatures are still bad, invest ten bucks on thermal paste and respate the GPU yourself. The GX660 has a very user-friendly layout for getting at the GPU.

Is it worth buying an I7 cpu instead of the I5 ? :) and upgrade..

What CPU fits? Do u have to insert GX660R bios to install it?

You can go all the way up to a i7 940xm on the original bios which is what I did.

Is it worth depends really on what you're gonna be using it for. I got my 940 for a steal off ebay and I use the laptop for multi threaded music and graphics apps so for me totally worth it.
