Unless the GX 660 and 660R are different then no, you do not have to remove the speaker bezel to remove the keyboard. Just unscrew the two screws underneath marked keyboard, then get a fingernail under the keyboard on the far left corner and run it slowly across the top. Pops right off.

if you have a corei7 processor you can add 1 more slot of ram and YES, you have to dissasemble almost the entire laptop to do that, but is really easy , you dont need to remove the vga and cpu cooler for that btw

I've removed my keyboard to install a 2gb stick into the 3rd ram slot under the keyboard, but found out you must have an i7 (I have non R with i5) to use the 3rd ram slot.

Just FYI for all, the keyboard literally just pops out, just pry up on the tabs towards the top of the keyboard and it will come out easily. I don't think I ever removed screws on the bottom either.

I am going to upgrade to an i7 920xm, I just found out I am getting a huge tax return, and am going to upgrade my 660 to last me through the next 1-1.5yrs of gaming on at least medium settings. Can the 660 handle the heat well? Do I need to also get an updated power supply brick? Anyone who has done this, any help or comments would be appreciated. Also I was looking at getting a QS version, they are all over ebay for $400ish, and there is no way I'm willing to spend 1000$ on a OEM. Anyone had any luck with these?

Yeah, I've upgraded from 460M to 920XM (QS). It works fantastic.
The grades are good, around 40-45C Idle + Enormous performance increase with throttlestop at 95W/70A - 25/25/25/25 Multipliers, makes it at 3,3GHZ across all cores + around 70 celsius max with turbo fan when gaming.

The installation went fine, I did it without static protection.

Uyski, where did you get your 180w PSU? Do I need to upgrade the stock MSI one, or will the 920xm work with the stock power brick?

    Thanks for the response.

I removed the screws on the bottom of the laptop (2), removed the speaker bezel, was able to get the right side of the keyboard up but the left side will not budge. What is the issue? Thanks.

There are sticky pads on the bottom which hold the keyboard in place, at least on mine. Maybe try pulling up harder? Be careful not to break the keyboard though.

Got my GX660R on Tuesday and out of the box the image loaded onto this computer sucked A$$. The LED manager wouldn't work, when coming out of sleep mode there was something funky happening to the screen where the data would get jumbled, and it did not respond very fast.

I removed the partition and did a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro. Installed all the drivers and this thing is a totally different beast! Runs great now. Very happy with the purchase. Now I just have to fix this keyboard flex and it will be perfect. :D

I bought an alienware psu brick from ebay, with the same connector as the stock one. The 920xm worked with my stock for a while, but crashed when I oc'd it while doing 3dmark

Has anyone else had their keyboard warp? The 'caging' on the outside of the chicklet keys in the lower right next to the enter and now beginning in the upper left have begun to warp on mine.. they're raised by a good half cm now, not sure if i should take it apart and try to flatten it out or if tabs have come loose... any advice appreciated.

A few people have mentioned it, but i dont recall seeing a solution im afraid.

On another note, my one disapointment with this laptop is that it feels fairly flimsy to a degree. Owners best take care with the screen as well, it's a little too flexible :(

The one i set up seemed to work fine out of the box, including the LED manager, although i must admit that the Raid 0 drives don't seem to show any particular performance improvement over a single 7.2k RMP hdd. None the less my friend is enjoying his new laptop ;p

Proud owner of a GX 660. I reinstalled windows clean on my 60 GB OCZ vertex 2 SSD and have not had a single hiccupp!! I've kept the 500 GB hard disk as secondary, no issues there. Made any necessary SSD tweaks, drivers, apps, etc. This thing is a beast! I love the speed in a mobile platform. Amazing product, keep up the good work MSI..

Future upgrades, CPU and Ram, gonna bump it up to 8 GB eventually.

Yes, all you have to do is flash yours with the raid bios and you will have raid 0 with a second drive installed.

I'm a tiny bit annoyed with the wifi card placement. Apparently the antennas can get disconnected fairly easily if you jab the power button or the other hotkeys.

So, yesterday, I was seeing maybe 8-11 MB/s file transfers over my network. Today I was at 6-8 MB/s. I took off the control bar and reseated my antennas, and I'm back to my 8-11 speeds. Yeesh.

    Hi, guys,
Well, after some weeks with the lappy, everything is perfect, 0 BSOD, low temperatures, high performance.
I have a dumb question, from a noob guy. I don't understand anything regarding to Raid, so don't laugh on me, but... 2 320GB HDD should be read as 2 320GB HDD or not? Because i actually have one 351 GB with OS and another 234 GB empty, what results 585GB total, not 640 GB.
Thanks in advance for your attention.

Manufactures think 1 kb = 1000bytes, but in reality it's 1024 as read by Windows.

So when you get to the gigabyte level it loses somewhere like 7%.

    Google it for more explanation.

    Hello,
Could anyone do a guide (picture or video) showing how to fix rattling sound in Gx660R step by step?
It may be easy but I have no idea what needs to be pressed down.

Hey guys, been stalking you all for a few weeks now. Sorting through the piles of different laptops on the market. Finally decided to go with this model a few days ago even with it being older and the gt680 coming out.

The video card/processor combo did me in with the price that I got it at. ($1369 US, shipped from buy.com) I am semi tech savvy so I didn't mind not buying form a well backed company.

Anyhow, it will be a couple weeks before I get my hands on it, I am still in Afghanistan and had it shipped to my house as a "hey I didn't die again!" present.

Intended games: WoW, BFBC2, BF1942, COH(and sequels), SC2 and World in Conflict.

Anyhow, I might bug you guys for some nitpicky things that I just can't find on the web (like Forge's optimization guide) or which RAM works out best on the system. That kind of stuff.

Anyhow. I am stoked for the computer, my current lappy is a miserable HP dv2000... haha. I don't want to talk about it, let's just say that I get excited when my fps jumps up to a screaming 10 on WoW with all settings at the lowest possible... I know, I know.

What type of RAM does this thing take. I know its DDR3-1333, 204-Pin, but is it PC3 8500, 10600, 10660, 10666, or 12800?

(Thats what I was getting at... poke poke...) Haha. Sorry.

thanks! I hate when my initial thought for a username is taken. Kinda ruins my groove.

So how does this system do at stock clokc settings? I really don't think I need to overclock for what I play and the places I will be taking it are rough enough on electronics, I don't want to decrease longevity even more. Also, I read that you changed out stock heatsinks and added some extras. Got a website I can pick those parts up at?

I am all about optimizing the hardware, already planned on drilling the case when I read that a couple people on here do it as well. I do the same OCD cooling/airflow type stuff on my car projects.

Stock settings should be fine for 90% of games that you play. Overclocking itself won't hurt the life of your card, but rather the heat that comes from it. Just make sure you're not burning up the card past 89C and you'll be fine.

My heatsink is the stock heatsink, but just with some extra copper heatsinks taped on here and there. I did replace my thermal pads, though.

The copper heatsinks are RHS-03 copper heatsinks. Tape is sekisui double-sided thermal tape. I used Gelid GC-Extreme thermal paste. Thermal pads are Bergquist 1mil pads. The copper, tape, and paste can all be found on ebay. Didn't see anymore of the pads, though. If you put new pads on the GPU you might have to put in a copper shim.

Yeah, that's the problem part, where I currently am, it gets 130+ in the summer. In the Philippines it gets 100+ with 100% humidity.

From the looks of it she used the 4mm tall 10x10. That should give you clearance for the bottom cover. Its what everyone was using for there Asus G60VX and JX models.

    This made my day :D :D :D

    anyways :p

Well, I am trying to come up with money out of nowhere to buy an i7 940xm. I may have just found the money... I hope I can confirm this in the next couple of days.

I can't wait to get a 940xm and an SSD. Any recommendations for the latter? I was eyeing the OCZ Agility 2 120GB, but any input is welcomed.

There's something special about having a notebook with a 3+ghz quadcore thanks to throttlestop and an SSD... I just can't get my mind off of it.

    Awesome, i'm a dragon then :)

it the 940xm that big of a jump ::edit:: nvm, just looked it up... over $1k for a cpu, ouch. go big or go home, no different than what i do to cars i guess ::edit:: i was looking at processors online the other day. figure, buy the new one and sell the old one to make up some of the cost difference.

i am struggling, however, to find GPU's that arent set up for desktop use. i.e. just the chip (yes that is a loose reference to a 'just the tip' joke) any ideas?

in reference to the gender thing, you can only pose as a female anime star for so long on the internet before you start dressing like hello kitty and hanging out in movie theatres. it's not good for you from a psychological standpoint.

I got the 920xm for around 300$ on ebay. It's a QS version though, but works amazingly :D
My CPU score on 3dmark06 jumped from 3000 to 5900
