It's only a great deal if it satisfies your needs. If you need to carry your laptop every day, unless you are a large powerful person you will quickly tire of the bulk and weight.

When you are shopping bargain laptops, they are a bargain for a reason.

Either a non-OC'able CPU, or 6.9lbs of PSU's, coupler box, cables, and 11.7lbs of laptop to tote around. A little less PSU weight for the 1070 SLI laptop :)

The GT73VR GPU is a 1080, so all games will run, SLI or not, at 1080 performance. The 7700HQ CPU undervolted should drive games just fine. Would a 7820HK OC'd be better, yes, and if you want the top performance you'll likely need to pay full price.

    It's your choice :)

@Teenzo both are good laptops. I personally have a gt83vr with dual 1080 and a 6920hq and it works fantastically.

I was able to OC my screen to 95htz to match my x34 that it pushes while only lightly breaking a sweat.

If you don't mind carrying 10lbs of laptop and 5lbs of power supply I can't recommend a better laptop. However eurocom has recently released a 780w power brick that is compatable, so I would recommend checking that out too.

I have little experience with the gt73 line other than playing around with one at a lan party and it feels just as capable...though I'm a little biased to my mechanical keys. Lol

I don't mind weight at all neither double power supply, hum can you tell me a little more about yours ? What temps are you getting during full load on CPU and gpu? Do you think screen has good color accuracy and quality? Does over clocking monitor affects its lifespan?

When I ran my benchmarks I had an ambient of 23c and I was reaching temps of low to mid 80's on gpu's (1080's are little furnaces) and about 60-78) on the cpu with a 4.0 clock.

I came from a TN panel so I think it's fantastic, I tested it on my family and friends with similar response.

Oc is a tricky thing. I want to say yes however I doubt unless you really abuse it or there is a defect it shouldn't affect the lifespan noticably.

I haven't tried the 330 watt with the 1070 gt83 but I have a feeling it will work when not on extreme load...

CPU is reaching 99C in Time Spy on max fan- what should I do?
    Capture.PNG

Is it normal for the CPU to reach this high a temp?

    @hmscott

I decreased the core voltage by -75 mv and upped clock to 41x max in turbo boost and now max temp the computer hit on cpu side is 93C in time spy... here is a screenshot at max recorded system info temps. Is this laptop even worth keeping? The cpu seems very weak compared to my gt80s and this is supposed to be a step up...

    Here's a new comparison: http://www.3dmark.com/compare/spy/1945910/spy/1945675/spy/1930585/spy/163579#

New decrease by -100 mv seems to be stable with 1x core turbo at 43x and 2,3,4 at 42x... temp now maxes at 92C... still seems high for a laptop that has a 3rd fan...\

cpu scores getting closer to my gt80s... :(... Seems every year, intel releases a cpu they claim to be more powerful yet it yields lower results....

Finally managed to beat the cpu score in timespy from my gt80s (which I wasn't even tuning at the time so it prob could go higher). Previous attempt at -130 mv caused a system freeze, so I took it to -115mv and it seems stable at 43x for all 4 cpus... For some reason the graphics scores were lower than the previous run?

Is this normal for this cpu? Is anyone else benching with temps this high?

@mason2smart all good testing, but don't panic so easily, you are just learning the new laptop - getting to know the limits takes time.

It's a keeper, you just need to learn what it can do and the best way to do it.

The MSI DGC tool should let you tune the fans, or Silent Option, or just turn on Full Fan - I am assuming you didn't turn that on?

When benchmarking I always run with Full Fan, were you doing that on your GT80S when getting those numbers? Are you doing that with the new GT83VR?

You should be running cooler than you are showing so I assume you aren't using Full Fan.

The auto fan curve is usually bent to be quiet and let things heat up, including thermal throttling, MSI Asus do this, probably others.

So try to find a way to tune your CPU fan, assuming your GPU's are staying cool enough you can leave those as they are.

It's also possible you are killing cache performance and therefore CPU performance with undervolt... I discovered that unlocking undervolt of core from cache helped performance, I leave cache at stock and only undervolt the cores. IDK how possible this is with Kabylake - XTU update or ThrottleStop update might help.

Consider using full fan (even if you are against it for noise reasons) for now to explore no undervolt and high OC - try 4.5ghz with no undervolt...it would be good.

You don't have to post all your findings, learn and let it bake for a while till you reach some conclusive discovery :)

I can oc with undervolt but the laptop started freezing up or getting stuck when the screen turned off with the -115 mv undervolt needed to keep the cpu under 90C

The CPU only scored above my gt80s once in timespy with the huge unstable undervolt and OC.

Stock at full fans the cpu hit 99.6 Celsius in timespy

Like I said, decouple cache and core undervolt, and only undervolt the cores.

For now, try working without an undervolt and using full fan to keep things cool.

See if decoupled undervolt, or if you can do that no undervolt improves performance at 4x core 41x, 42x, 43x, 44x, 4.5x settings.

I wonder if your CPU fan has a problem, can you see the RPM in DGC?

Darn, looks like a bad fitting heatsink or paste job on the CPU, I'd fire off a simple explanation (temps at stock in Timespy should be enough - don't mention OC!!) email to your MSI trade-in contact and see what he says on how to proceed - return to him for another or get an RMA... sigh.

I thought you went for the GT73VR 1080? Single PSU, lower weight, top performance, less noise.

Why didn't you go all the way for the 1080 SLI then?

Maybe use this problem to allow a change of order? If you do that you can avoid RMA as well...just reject it and change the order.

Now that I know it is overheating at stock in Timespy with Full Fan's, no need to waste time playing with it further, get it replaced or RMA'd per my last post - refresh page to get latest edit :)

Ask nicely for them to be more supportive, it's not your fault for the issues, and learning how to work through technical and support issues is good training for future work - it helps in school too - practical experience wins out over school credits :)

GT75 is a new model announced at Computex 2017, and MSI said Computex GT83 had some updates, per MSI those aren't being added to the trade-in inventory, it's locked with models as they are until they run out - check with MSI. :)

Yeah, but the GT75 1080 only uses 1 PSU... and if you did want to take it somewhere, you could do it far more easily than a GT83 + 2x PSU's + box + cables.

At least with a GT75 you would be able to consider using it as a laptop ;)

Instead of white reflective backing on the keyboard its still red.. this causes the lighting on the new gt83 keyboard to seem dimmer. Not sure if the lights themselves are dimmer.
It does not have the light between keys like seen above but is red between keys because of the red backing of the keyboard kept from the 80s line.

That doesn't sound right, it sounds like it's broken.

The "red" light's for the GT80 on the red only keyboard were single red LED's on each key.

The new GT83VR you have should be able to go all white, all blue, all off, etc. If you have red stuck on, it's not working right :)

Can anyone with a GT83VR confirm this?

5lb's is pretty wimpy, the GT75 will likely be 9lbs.

Tell them 9lbs standard weight for a laptop with adequate cooling and power, anything less is for non-technical students - you are a technology student and have different needs. :)

That and I kind of do agree with my parents on the fact that the laptop is kind of distracting and ostentatious to have in class. A slimmer laptop would fit in better there on the go and would prob. get better battery life...

They likely don't test at load like you are using.

What does prime95 small FFT look like? ;)

Again, don't ask for a discount, you'll get a cold shoulder and a long silence.

I wouldn't push your luck, plenty of people that ask for a discount stop hearing back from MSI... so just trying to warn you it's not a good idea historically.

You may not take it to class, but you will want to take it to the library, study rooms, labs, meetings, etc etc.

College is a bit more dynamic than you are expecting. :)

Is it normal to be hitting voltage and power limit on the GTX 1080s at stock clocks and 50-60% usage? having strange performance issues in FFXIV and trying to figure out the source.

EDIT: it's also almost all on GPU2
