I really love all the talk in here about making performance of these laptop better. In regards to battery longevity (I'm a college student) what is the best underclock and unvolting settings? I need this to last while im on campus and can't bare the impulsive eyes i get from other people because of my HUGE power brick. 2nd if there a program that can freeze certain processes? I been tweaking and modding with mobile phones where I would freeze apk/processes but there was an app called Titanium Backup. On PC i see i have a whole new world to learn. All assistance is appreciated.

That's another thing. Was wondering if there was a way shut the dual gt970m gpu as if it was a desktop without a gpu.

in Windows you would look into Startup and disable some unneeded programs and services. And when you are not in a game using SLI, the second GPU is under low power mode. During light desktop use, the whole system (CPU,GPUs, fans etc) are close to as efficient as they can get frankly. You shouldn't expect any meaningful gain there. Lowering brightness, turning off unused radios (Wifi/bluetooth) seems like the more important ways. However, I wouldn't expect more than 2 hours of battery life under any condition. Have you already bought it or still considering? For campus use, I would get a different laptop maybe.

I've had this laptop since the last week of august 2016, Paid 2400 on amazon by msi. I looked into other msi laptop and found something better for what i need [ http://www.bestbuy.com/site/msi-15-...drive-aluminum-black/5515003.p?skuId=5515003]. The issue is i cannot find any buyer if i sell this. It's an amazing laptop no doubt but its causing more of a hindrance in college with its massive weight and giant power brick. If i had a backpack I would keep it but nothing seems to have the amount of pockets or accessibility that i need.

Try to get your hands on a MSI backpack specifically made for GT80 if you can. Believe me, I searched months, tried more than 5 bags. Nothing was better for my GT80S than the backpack that came with it. Its shoulder straps are padded and I don't notice the weight at all now. You are right, the resale value is not great, but I'm sure you will find ways to love it. Start with typing on another laptop ;)

I love the laptop that I want to buy the next Titan after I graduate college. At the moment there is no good backpack and msi isn't selling them. I need something to take to college that will make me think of staying instead of going home asap to place the heavy load on my desk...

Where is this X Boost? I have MSI Dragon Gaming Center and not MSI Dragon Center and it doesn't have such feature, I've checked the screenshots and it was basic compared to Dragon Center. Are you sure this feature is enabled for GT80S? And if so, how do I disable it?

Not 100% sure as I'm not too familiar with the software but it should be on a tab with a bunch of other performance items. I'll have to look when I'm at home. It's not so easy to diagnose and help off the back of a garbage truck.

Edit: I'm just downloading dragon gaming center now....it looks like its for desktops...

Edit2: I tried the msi gaming center and its very basic, im fairly sure its on the GT80's thats how I knew to cut it out on mine.

Will reinstall dragon gaming center to see if the option will show up. Also is it possible to put a 980 or 980m in the GT80S? If i'm going to keep this i'd at least like to be able to upgrade it to the highest gpu it can possibly handle also if so where can i purchase the 2 gpu? Thank you

x boost seems to be a feature of GT83VR to me, it is first introduced in its introduction page, GT80S and earlier have no mention of it in their page. Also, Dragon Center seems to be for the GT83VR as well and Dragon Gaming Center for GT80S (it is included in its support page)

When this issue is happening, open Task Manager, select Processes tab, sort them by disk usage (Click disk column for that) and tell us which process is causing high disk usage. This can be many things like a virus, defrag, windows automatic maintenance or antimalware scan going mad.

I succesfully installed an Intel 8265 wifi card to my GT80S now. I was having some problems with the stock card, mainly not seeing some APs after some time. Now all looks good.
It was an easy install like discussed before here.I took the hinge cover off. Removed the old card and it took some fiddling to seat the new card blindly but it was OK in the end.

    Hey guys,

I have been trying to enable the numpad at boot for a long time now. I have spent countless hours on this, read the Synaptics API, reverse engineered the drivers, recorded and replayed driver packets and many other things. Finally, I have succeeded. Now we can turn on and off the numpad with a program. Although I tested it on my computer, if anything happens it is your responsibility. I also used a library of Jessenic from XDA so thanks goes to him as well. Here is how to use it:

1-Extract the archive in a folder of your choice.
2-synapticsnumpad.exe is for instant toggling on and off your numpad.
3-numpad toggle.exe is for putting a shortcut into your startup folder (Start Menu), this program waits 15 seconds and then toggles the numpad by also hiding its window.
4-Create a shortcut to this numpad toggle.exe and put it in your startup folder (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp) for me.
5-Well that's it, your numpad will be enabled automatically every boot.

    Regards.

Hello, guys, so I'm still working on improve the numpad of ours. Someone complained to me that the numpad wasn't able to generate Alt Codes (you hold Alt key and type a code, a symbol appears). So I have written a program to fix it. Extract the archive in some folder and put a shortcut to your Startup folder. When this program is running, you will be able to generate Alt Codes with your Synaptics Numpad.

Also, somewhere in the forums I saw someone asked if this numpad is able to repeat the keys so it could be used in games for direction etc. The answer is yes, but it also requires another program to be written.

    Hey guys,

It took a lot more time than I anticipated but I coded another application which enables the Synaptic numpad keys to repeat. When you hold 7 key it now continues outputting number 7 like a mechanical numpad would do. So that we can use these keys as direction keys in games. I have tested the repeat function under text editors, so let me know if you test it under games like GTA V etc. Extract the archive in a folder of your choice and run numpad_repeat.exe when you would like to have the keys to repeat or just put a shortcut to this exe file under your Startup folder.

    Regards.

    1) Never heard of it... it's not full but it's saying it is?? Please post screen snippets (snipping tool) to illustrate what you are seeing...

Maybe disable pagefile - is it set to be under OS control? Are you close to the end of free space?

    2) Yes, there are people that have posted doing so on the GT80 / GT80S, so search... if you look up the specs on the Optical drive that shows up on hardware inventory programs - or Device Manager, you can find the thickness so you can get a caddy that fits.

Or just google it, several options show up:

    https://www.google.com/search?q=msi+gt80s++SSD+HDD+Caddy&oq=msi+gt80s++SSD+HDD+Caddy

    3) You can't swap 980m's for 970m's, there are other components that are unique to each model. You're best move is to take the MSI offered trade-in plan for your GT80S and get a Pascal GT73/GT75/GT83 upgrade:

GT72/GT72S and GT80/GT80S Owners GPU Upgrade Discussion
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...0-gt80s-owners-gpu-upgrade-discussion.795236/

See Post #1, it's got the email address to ask for the upgrade...

    Anything else? :)

It's not happening now but normally for 5 minutes after boot this still be stuck between 100% - 98%... So you can do anything during that time...

No, you misunderstood what I said :)

There are no GPU upgrades, but you can "trade-in" your GT80S and pay a little extra to upgrade to a whole brand new laptop, with a new warranty / etc.

Here is what I said, now that I explained the situation a bit more, re-read what I wrote:

Are you not comprehending what @hmscott is saying? It's not worth it to search for and purchase the specific upgrade parts when you deal directly with MSI and get a brand new laptop for similar or not much more money.

No, it's more complicated than that. :)

You not only need to replace the MXM cards, you need new cooling and new power circuitry in the laptop - they are built differently out of the factory to support the 2 different configurations. The BIOS is set up differently too. The 970m and 980m SLI models come with different power requirements and BIOS limits, not to mention different power supplies.

There are people that try to do this, but I haven't seen any GT80S owners post being successful.

It's much easier to swap out your upgrade storage and ram, if any, and put in the original configuration and then trade that in to MSI + pay a little more $ to get a new laptop with Pascal single GPU or SLI model.

Like I said email the address for the MSI trade-in program and ask for information on how to trade-in your laptop, that's really the only way.

There is no trade-in program available to trade-in a 970m SLI laptop to a 980m SLI laptop, and there is no MXM upgrade possible, so there is nothing to compare...

The costs for the upgrade from your laptop to a new Pascal laptop are reasonable - $800 from a GT80 980m SLI to GT73 1080, which is about what 1 MXM card costs, so yes, it's definitely a fair price for the upgrade :)

    Hey Guys,

bit of a random one here, decided to pull the trigger and buy a GT80S thinking i would be investing in a fairly decent upgrade from my GE72 (GTX1070) but unfortunately so far im extremely disappointed. I've had all kinds of issues with random software freezing which i found was because of the Nahimic software causing issues which was easy enough to fix but unfortunately, both games i've thrown at it so far have proved to be fairly underwhelming...

Pub G runs like crap on any system but id expects more than 30fps @ 4k from a 980 SLI setup overwatch scraped by at 60fps on 4k, am i doing something wrong? i've given it a fresh win 10 install using the recovery usb but i can't help but feel like something is holding the machine back from its true potential so i thought id post here to see if there are any known bugs (software or otherwise) that impede performance on these machines...

Right now, the GE72 is giving me better frames whilst not sounding like a boeing 747 on takeoff. ( i understand the advantage of a stronger single card vs SLI but it still feels like the GT80s should be holding its own...)

Am i going mad or are my expectations out of line?

hi guys, got a gt80s a couple of weeks ago...bought it before reading through all the problems that you guys have been having with the buyback/upgrade program, sorry that msi didn't honour their promises.
anyway, had an alienware m17x r2 that eventually died and then went and got a msi gs43vr but when i lost that i decided to go big again :)
temperatures were pretty terrible, cpu 96c and gpu 86/82 under load. cleaned it and pasted it today and i'm getting cpu 83 and gpu 78/73 so i'm pretty happy (the left side outlets were pretty bunged up). also had to bin one of the ram sticks as I was getting bsod once a day and it was crashing memtest but i think 48gb is enough :)

    How are your temps?

And you should a clean install using a clean image made with Media Creation Tool, and then you install the drivers(if any is needed) and DONT install Gaming Center, just use XTU or TS.

Wow, there is a thread for the Titan GT80 S, learn something new every day.

Here is how I have configured SSDs on my GT80S Skylake:

Samsung PM981 as the primary boot drive with Win10
Samsung PM951 as the clone boot drive
Samsung 860 Evo m.2 with Linux on it
Samsung 860 Evo 2.5" with data on it.

I deconfigured the RAID0 it came with on dual 256GB SSDs. Resulting in possibly faster machine but one that was twice as likely to fail - one of the disks goes bad and the entire RAID goes bad.

The 1TB HDD was useless, very slow at 5400 rpm and that was the first thing to go. I cannot believe they put such garbage in such an expensive machine.

In my opinion, all regular HDD are very slow at this point, even for games and regular media. We have very fast computers and fast internet, and old HDDs can barely keep up. When using steam and downloading stuff plus using my PC for youtube and browsing, the HDD was keeping my laptop slow, between very fast download+antivirus checking everything downloaded.

As soon as I removed it and put a regular 1 TB SSD, everything was fixed and extremely fast.

Honesty I just use them for bulk storage now with redundancy.

I'm trying to work on a box that would allow me to have a bunch in raid 5/6 or which ever ecquivelent so I can bulk offload my data when I want to do wipes and stuff.

Or use it for movies and music to free up space on local. Lol

I don't recommend Raid 5/6 at all, risk of loosing all data is very high and this is coming from personal experience. If you want redundancy, we have had systems way more secure with raid 1 standard, even if it doesn't have speed benefits.

Keep in mind that a 1TB SSD costs as low as 100dlrs, that is a very atractive price in my opinion. Sure it's not fast like the best SSDs but waaaayy faster than normal HDDs.

I had issues with regular HDDs because all the data I download and move is big enough, and fast enough, that my HDDs just choke. Of course If I am patient, I could still put movies and the like on them, but then again I think SSDs are low enough in price :)

But don't worry, even if I don't use them it doesn't mean they are useless at all. Our massive NAS systems are still HDDs because they are cheap enough and good for long term slower storage. Like our finished project data and all that. HDDs for NAS can be found in 10TBs per disc often at good prices, and making a big raid 1 array with several TBs is much muuuch cheaper with HDDs.
