I will follow up on what DukeCLR said, I just purchased this computer on Saturday and it has been perfect out of the box as far as I can tell. It does come with a little bloatware (like Norton) but nothing too crazy. I find the MSI apps for controlling the computer/sound/etc. are fine for my needs. Repasting isn't needed as far as I can tell, the laptop seems to run within safe temp ranges under load, though I only played a few hours of Fallout 4 which was all I had time to do this weekend.

The only thing I did right away is make a USB drive that I can reinstall my computer from if anything goes bad in the future. The laptop has software to to guide you through that and prompts you do to so when you are first getting everything set up. It was super easy. Just buy a 32 GB USB-3 flash drive (under $10 on Amazon) and that is all you need to do.

I think when you read forums you need to remember that most people are there to ask questions, have problems, etc. You don't hear as often from people who have had a fine out of the box experience and don't have any questions/comments to add.

Some other people have used different applications for overclocking so they may have a different opinion but I installed Dragon center, SCM and Nahimic.

Instead of a clean install, you could try something like IObit Uninstaller to uninstall the bloat. I didn't really think it had that much. If you clean install, I would download the drivers from MSI to a flash drive and install them in the order MSI recommends on that page. I'm not sure you even need all of them. I know some uninstall MSI Dragon Center and use MSI Afterburner and Intel XTU for overclocking. I'm fine with just using dragon center for now. There is an ICC profile somewhere in this thread that I really like and makes the display look even better. If you try that, I use Color Profile Keeper to override Dragon Center and I also uninstalled the MSI True Color utility.

Was it the ICC profile from the NoteBookCheck review? http://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GT73VR-6RE-Titan-Notebook-Review.172916.0.html

I may install that tonight and see how it looks. The included sRGB setting seems the best to my eyes out of the box, but I'm sure it could use some tweaking.

I just put the profile Atma linked to and I think its great. I had to get CPkeeper to get the profile loaded, It looks as though I'll have to deal with that window every time I reboot.

I haven't seen any. They will all probably vary somewhat unless you can get the equipment and do it for your display yourself.

I just noticed a small problem on mine this morning. The besel in about a 1 inch spot on the right is separating from the display. I can press it back and it will stick for a while but raises back up again. You don't really notice it unless you are looking at a sharp angle from the side. I don't think I will go to the trouble of sending it in for repairs .. yet.

    Hi Guys,

I've recently got a GT73VR 6RE (1070). And i'm very happy with it.. but there is only one thing.. a high pitched noise is coming from the GPU fan. When it is in idle you hear nothing, but when I play a game and it starts to spin faster you hear the high pitched noise. Does this sound familiar?

    Thanks!

I can barely hear my fans when I'm playing a game. Definitely no high pitched noise. I have the fan speed set on auto.

Really?? When I set my fans on auto, they are going crazy.. fast/slow/fast/slow.. very annoying. I even updated the Bios and Firmware of the laptop, hoping it resolved this.

I've never had that and I think most have reviews I have read say that isn't a problem with this laptop because it is with laptops in the past. You might want to talk to MSI or your reseller.

I don't get a high-pitched noise from my laptop either, but the fan is certainly audible when the laptop is under load. Nothing I'd consider bad since it is removing air from a hot video card and cpu, but you can hear it for sure.

That's a defect, even if you found a temp fix how long would it last, file a ticket and see where it goes. If they were to send you some kind of disassembly instructions they could come in handy for future screen upgrades.

I have had that on a ge62, its a very typical issue on msi screens, I thought they had fixed it on the 73vr.. I sent it to repair and they changed the whole screen under warranty.

I got an RMA. It doesn't seem right that I have to pay for shipping to them on a new laptop under warranty. I'm tempted to try 2 sided tape myself but I'm worried it will just get worse as time goes by.

It is using double-sided tape so if you send it in they will just reapply a new one unless there are other issues with that plastic panel.
However, it is up to you. :)

Thanks Kevin. I thought about it but it wouldn't be easy to slide 2 sided tape in there, for me anyway. :D I was also worried that 2 sided tape on top of other 2 sided tape might cause some kind of problem. I'll just let MSI do it the right way.

Build/chassis issues are the only real negatives I've seen re: the new MSI's ... uneven edges, gaps in the bezel, etc. ... not deal killers for me by any means but hopefully, by early 2017, some of the build issues will be resolved ...

does anyone have an idea why the GT73VR 4k can't downscale to 1080p?
there is only the option for 1900×1200 and there are black bars on the side and it looks horrible

Yes. Of course. Everything. Windows, nvidia control panel...

Or do you mean I can literally create a custom resolution that is not on the list there?

Has anyone measured the wattage being pulled by the system during a benchmark. I am wondering the actual wattage from the 1070 vs 1080 model during the turbo/overclock mode.

Thanks for the heads up I will copy+paste my message over the GT83VR Thread! I got my GT73VR with a 1070 already and got a good score (112 and 132 lowering the refresh rate to 60 and overclocking 200hz), and 70-75c temps. But I want to know how it fares with a sli configuration. Heat is a concern, as sometimes rendering can go for more than 24/48 hours for animation.

I took this snapshot from mine when I was replacing my SSD. In the attached image I have removed the finned heat sink and turned it over, it's flipped over exposing the thermal pad. Its hard to read but the bottom two slots have a P stamped on them and the top one has a S, the bottom ones are the NVMes.

Not that I am aware of for complete system power. You can use hwinfo to get the gpu wattage. That would help as something is better than nothing. Thx

Use Power-A-Watt to measure the power draw, you cannot measure it without using such device.

    Two questions:

    1. Has anyone had Dragon Center stop showing CPU info? Everything else is fine, but for some reason the CPU clock speed no longer displays any data. Temperature is still reported. I downloaded an update that was offered for it, and that did not seem to fix it. Otherwise computer seems to be performing fine and running fast.

    2. How smoothly does the Windows 10 Anniversary update go, does it break anything? Windows did some sort of auto-update a few days ago while the computer was sleeping without asking me (still finding with/playing with all the configuration settings) but I still need to do the "big one".

So I'm in the market for a nice gaming laptop, and I think the GT73VR is going to end up what I land on. I've scanned the topic a bit but obviously after so many pages it all kind of starts to blend together...in general are people pretty happy with it? It seems like the problem point on this model (there's something on anything released really,) is some build defects, is that correct?

Also I'm just curious about something and I know this doesn't mean anything to the overall performance of the laptop, but I just wonder from the pictures. Are those 2 red vertical areas on the front of the lid lights that can be changed colors like the keyboard? Or are they not lights at all? And are there any other areas that can be changed other than the keyboard/track pad?

    Thanks.

Even though I had to send mine in to have the bezel repaired, I still love it. I don't love having to pay shipping one way for repairs. It runs great, cool and quiet. I still haven't decided if those 2 red stripes even light up. The keyboard/track pad are the only lights you can change. I always turn the track pad off because it is just distracting to me. If I had to do it over, I think I would give more consideration to the Alienware just for the free in-home service. Other than that, I am very happy with what I got.

You can get some idea by reading hwinfo wattage for CPU / GPU, but only a wall meter will tell you the whole system usage, including PSU overhead.

They are cheap meters, for sale at most hardware stores, and of course online.

Some public libraries also offer a service to check out common household tools - call your central library or local library to find out if they offer this service and if a wattage meter for measuring appliance power usage is available for check out.

There might even be hardware rental/loaner service from the hardware stores - besides simply purchasing, measuring, and returning ;)

Yes, this is what we are talking about, there are other makes as well, but the "Kill A Watt" is the name everyone remembers ;)

The original P4400 is quite affordable now. :)

P3 International has really grown their product line since the P4400:

I haven't tried the other one, or this one, but they look interesting too:

    Gtx 1080 best with a 1080p 120hz screen or the 4k option?

Do you think with the 1070 dropping the 4k screen down to 1440p will be nice and playable? Or the 1070 is best paired with the 120hz screen?

When you bump up the refresh from 60hz to 120hz, you effectively double the number of FPS you need to have the same gameplay.

That puts 2x load on the GPU / CPU and might put your laptop into a state that requires 100% fan's to cool it, which is very noisy.

Running at 4k 60hz reduces the CPU load, but greatly increases the GPU load, so high fans again.

It's good to take into account the consequences of increasing the GPU / CPU load as need to fit the higher density of data being sent to match the higher resolution and / or refresh :)
