Nice find Cyborg. It was about time this appeared.
    I'm waiting for Striker's comment on this :p :D
BTW I always liked that red coating MSI uses for its Dragon Edition GT series.
Oh and another thing, can someone dump a VBIOS rom of its 980m for me? I'd appreciate that :)

What is the difference between Super Raid and Super Raid 2? 1400MB/s vs 1500MB/s?

There is no difference, just the amount of drives used in the RAID 0 configuration. Technically Super Raid would be two SSD while Super Raid 2 can be 3 or 4. It's just a marketing name for Raid 0.

Depends on the SSDs in which they consist of. 2x SSD when Super Raid first came about were getting 900 - 1000 MB/s in ATTO whereas 3x should be getting around 1400-1500.

Ok, so if I usually game with no other major tasks (i.e video editing etc.) would I still see a noticeable difference with 3 compared to 2 M.2's?

Gaming makes very little use of the drives whether you have SSD or not. All it affects is your load times between maps and the game itself. No increase in FPS whatsoever. It's very unlikely you'd see a difference.

If I bought a larger M.2 now and added a second one down the road into RAID 0, would I have to reinstall Windows?

Yes you would typically. Software exists that prevents from having to do so, but it's best to just reinstall.

I'm not an expert but I think the m.2 comes in 2 varieties - PCIe and mSATA - and the GT72 uses mSATA, and the Plextor you mention is PCIe. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'd love to know for sure as I'm looking at the Crucial M550 m.2 in 512MB.

choice very questionable use one slot pci express sata interface
the speed obtained with 4 ssd classics could have it with two PCI-Express SSD M.2
the latest motherboards for notebooks have compatibility with standard PCI Express sata ssd
i'm not satisfied, perhaps the only negative this beautiful notebbok

Yes but at the same time the SATA slots give you the option for more capacity so it's swings and roundabouts there.

SATA has better compatibility than PCIe version, and if you need to extract data on a desktop system you can easily get away with that.

The answer to the USB 3.0 driver issue is to install the windows 7 usb 3.0 driver from the GT 70 here MSI Global - Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Motherboard, Graphics and more -- tested and working on my system.

I'm a victim of the nvidia issue too. I have both intel and nvidia installed with latest drivers available and I still get a blank screen on startup. The odd thing is, sometimes it'll boot up fine for one time but if I restart 10 times in a row I get a blank screen. I can login then hit alt+f4>up arrow 3 times>enter and that reboots the machine.

Rebooting in safe mode and disabling the nvidia card in the device manger will let windows 7 bootup without a blank screen, but this is useless.

FWIW, dragon center, scm, and all of the msi software works with windows 7, even the gpu switch button prompts the screen to change cards and clicking ok reboots the machine. I can't remember exactly but there were things I had to get specifically for windows 7. I've been messing with this on and off for a week or so. The machine feels way more responsive and just quicker in general with loading software compared to windows 8, but gaming is out of the question.

I'd like to see a fix for this but until then I'll continue dual booting with windows 8.1.

The port layout for the machines that ship with M.2 drives are:

    4x M.2 SATA gen III
    1x 2.5" SATA gen II
    1x Optical gen II

This is the maximum number of ports the mobile chipset can handle.

    Hello again,

Today I got my gt72 delivered.

I didn't want any ssds in my gt72 because I already got 2 kinston ssdnow 120gb m.2 ssd.

But I having troubles in raid 0 setup. When I try to setup raid irst shows me that they are non-raid disks and I cannot create a raid partition with them. I placed the ssds in ssd1 and ssd2 inputs on m.2 bracket.

Anyone has any ideas about what is going on?

Hi there! This is my third attempt to get the same question answered. Unfortunately the discussion rushed by - even though this problem could be one that we all have in common:

Have you - like me - noticed the horizontal stripes, that show up when the screen displays dark colours? This phenomenon has been an issue with the last gen (880m Version) and has showed up again in the recent build.

Have a look how noteboockckeck.net describes it:

(Source: MSI GT72 (GTX 980M) Notebook Review Update - NotebookCheck.net Reviews)

(Source: MSI GT72 Notebook Review - NotebookCheck.net Reviews)

The Issues is not a deal breaker but still annoying. It The issue was solved via driver update last time. I tried to contact Support various times but did not get any answer that was really helpful ("reinstall driver, bla, bla").

Please check and care to answer.

    Best regards

    phila

P.S.: MSI is not the only Company haveing Problems. Seems like the last ASUS ROG had the same Display and the same driver issues: http://rog.asus.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-38346.html?

P.P.S.: At least one of our members has experienced the same issue with an older model:

    Hi guys!
I'm a happy of the gt72 since a few weeks, but I live in a dusty environment and the constant 1700 rpm of the fans make a lot of dust in just a week or so.
Take a part the constant noise from the system, is there some way to make the default fan speed lower? IMO keep the system at 30-35° Celsius is not necessary in idle.
    Thanks!

I really don't want to go through the whole thread to find this particular answer, but was it ever determined if the models with the TN panels could be replaced by IPS panels?

If so how would I go about purchasing one? Would I just find a local, certified PC store here in town to install thereafter?

    Thanks!

Actually I couldn't download it from the thread of your link (only for user), but than I found a software make for the gt70 that works just fine: With a click I can set the fan at 1250 rpm (instead of 1750) and still have 33° in idle :)
    Setup.zip: http://www16.zippyshare.com/v/23339975/file.html

Btw I will keep trying to hit the 1000 rpm wall :)

    Thanks for the reply.

I figured it out, it was something else working like a charm now. I missed something really basic.

I was also wondering if Plextor m6e is compatible with GT72. I'm now thinking about making another raid 0 for games only.

Here's the link: Amazon.com: Plextor M6e Series 128GB M.2 PCIe Internal Solid State Drive (PX-G128M6e): Computers & Accessories

It says it has a m.2 socket and looks like it'll fit but it's not sata, it's pci-e. Any ideas?

Hi! I guess to the CPU there is no such Thing as overclocking. GPU Overclocking can be done with nVidia Inspector or MSI Afterburner - to a certain extent (+135mhz to be exact). As for more ambitious GPU overclocking you`ll have to wait for a modded vBios and you have to have the balls to flash it. It worked well for me on my former Clevo notebook but I am not sure if it is as easy with msi. I heard several people in techinferno who said they had Trouble flashing, or even bricked the card.

    Best regards

Purchased this laptop with 980m without SSD! I haven't looked yet inside if theres a m2 daughterboard. The laptop is really quiet and cool on overclocked settings! 3.5ghz with gpu +135 core clock OC. So far i'm really happy with the laptop and i recommend everyone this laptop. The quality of the monitor is also really good. I'm not sure though if its the ips or tn version, every webshop doesn't list it except one wich says ips but i'm not sure though.

I contacted msi service center in The Netherlands and they haven''t been really helpfull.. it was some weird indian guy with heavy accent and couldnt't tell me if this version contained m2 daughterboard...The guy told me to e-mail msi and i did and they told me to contact the place again i called..

Thanks for this amazing thread as it was really informative. Everything i needed to know before purchasing this laptop.

I discussed this with MSI and this thread 2 months ago. Presently I have not set up dual boot. Any recommended documents/references on how to do this?

Where did you get SCM? I did not see this, but it has been a month since I looked.
EDIT: I see it out there on MSI support site now.

Have you applied all of the updates for win7 from the msi site? Just curious. I have the updates, but have not installed yet. SCM was not listed.
    -- Intel_Chipset_Drivers_10.0.20.exe
    -- Intel_RAID_Drivers_13.1.0.1058.exe
    -- Intel_Smart_Connect_Technology_5.0.10.2907.exe
    -- Intel_USB3.0_Drivers_3.0.0.34.exe
    -- Norton_Internet_Security_21.1.0.18.exe
    -- Realtek_HD_Audio_Drivers_6.0.1.7293.exe
    -- Super_Charger_1.2.026.exe

    Here is my work around.

    1) Connect an external monitor to the HDMI port. 9/10 times this will display properly for me (YMMV). If so, go to Device Manager and disable the 980m. 9/10 times this will display properly to the notebook display. Re-enable it and you are good to go.
    2) install realvnc or other remote monitor and connect to your notebook using that. Again, disable and re-enable the 980m and you should be good to go. You have to be aware of your network

It is a PITA, for sure.

    Hello folks!

Whew, I've finished reading this thread :D Kudos to Striker, Meaker, Dilligaff, Kevin, Derek and other guys for their expertise!
The subject is my only opportunity of getting a 980m in a laptop conventionally (by going to the store and buying it).

Here are some details of the laptop, which is sold nearby:
    i7 4710MQ(2.5), 16384, 1Tb+SSD 128*2, NV GTX980M 8Gb, Blu-ray Combo, WiFi, BT, Cam, Win8.1
    panel: TN+film
    No customization possible, of course.

Could someone enlighten me on whether this GT72 would be inferior to existing/upcoming Clevo/Sager models with 980m?
Also, if 'SSD 128*2' means two M2 SSD in a RAID, will that mean that two drives work in parallel, providing 128 Gb worth of disk space, or is that 256 Gb sequentially? I'm not too familiar with RAID :(
And can I expect a significant boost over my P170EM (in sig)?

I've been on the lookout for a replacement since September, so far this machine remains the only opportunity.
Normally, Clevo/Sager would be my first choice, but unfortunately they are not likely to appear here and I would have to buy them from Europe or US, which means expensive shipping and dealing with customs upon arrival as well as virtually no warranty.

    Thanks!

Does anyone have the GT72 version with i7 4720HQ and the Wide View Display?
What Display did MSI exactly use here? Please use hwinfo to check and post the manufacture and display type.

    Thanks in advance

Wikipedia has a good comparison of the cards that you mention. The 285M is about the same vintage as a 480M that I used in a laptop configuration. Although benchmarking and testing is the only way to really answer your question, it sure seems like the 980M should romp all over your 285 SLI. GPU and CPU memory is much better as are clocks. I saw noticeable impovements from 480m to 580m and then also from 765m to 980M.

I would just give it a shot, making sure that you have the ability to return in a few days.

Regarding the blank screen issue. This one is slightly perplexing to me. I have recently updated all drivers that appear on the MSI site (win7) and added SCM. GPU button now works as I would expect.

Also went to 344.75 NVidia drivers.

My laptop screen has display properly on shutdown and reboot for about 10 times now, but I do not believe that means it is fixed since the problem has ALWAYS been worse after you leave the system without power for some amount of time. I will test that tonight.

My GT72 has an IPS screen. Hwinfo says it's the LG LP173WF4-SPF1 display. I was expecting a TN screen thought they were only fitted on the 4980hq version.

Can't run my 980m stable on 135+, have to lower it to 95+. And i have one dead white pixel in the center :(

the 980m will be twice as fast in games than the 680m. you will feel thgis as soon as you start a game. cpus - the cpu will be about 15% faster, you probably wont feel the cpu change.

i think the gt72 is better than what clevo has available today. there are several reasons.
    measurably- msi is quieter
arguably- the msi plastic feels better to touch.
may not be relevant- drive/space expansion options are better on the msi with 2.5" and M.2 sata drives. for a total of 6 drives with flexible options of 3 and 3 of each kind or Two 2.5" and Four m.2

if the gt72 box says 2*128ssd it means 2 separate 128 gb ssds setup as raid0 so they appear as 1 larger 256gb ssd to the os

imho the 211 sku is the perfect sku, as long as you are willing to add your own drives (128gb ssd is too small imho). for an extra thousand dollars you can get an ips and 4980 processor, however i think it maybe a better deal to save that thousand , skip the ips/4980 and just buy a new two thousand dollar laptop in 2-3 years.

the blank screen issue- try disabling "fast startup" in the bios/uefi . also try disabling hybernate in windows power options (especially in windows 7). see if that fixes the issue at bootup and the resuming from sleep type issues with display/gpu. this will cost you a few seconds of bootup time, but may solve the issue. if it does not solve the issue just put the setting back to where it was.

for the pixel you can try using a pixel exerciser, i have had some success with those things.

+95 gpu core should allow it to be stable in most/all games. memory can be upped some too, altho i dont have any games where doing either core or mem oc improves the experience in a noticeable way at 1080p.

the cpu offers 2 free turbo bins to 3.5ghz on all 4 cores and somewhat surprisingly offers 2 free bins (+200mhz) to 3.7 on the cache as well. the cache bump is a fun one and seems to do more for perf than the 2 cpu core bins alone. this oc is rock stable after lengthy stress test so i am leaving this one on for now- cores and cache.
