I suppose you are referring to this rubber piece?
Yes you can certainly do that, although I still find the space a bit tight to work in without removing or partially removing the heat sink assembly. You want to be very sure that the memory is properly seated when doing it this way as there's less of the memory to push against when inserting the module.
-
Properly seated, locked in, posted, working fine. Installing win8 now. I'm very anal that way. Every pin is fully seated...

WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
It looks similar to the rubber block that's used to secure 2.5" drives in the SATA bays. -
Possibly to provide support for the back cover?
-
WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
The backplate is a preetty solid piece of plastic.
Do all the new generation of MSI have the block glued to the motherboard? -

Update: cosmetically, 1763s have eliminated all of the LED lighting found on the 1762s. No speaker illumination, and the bottom of the keyboard blue lights are gone. And so are the LEDs on the touch-pad. as mentioned earlier, touch-pad appears to be identical to that if branded MSI, but the red lines on the pad is not there. just plain black pad w/ 2 buttons. shape and size also appear to be identical. just 'cleaner'. Keyboard does have nice blue back-lightung. Cosmetically, nearly identical to the branded MSI.
I love this laptop!!!!! Key strikes are smooth as butter. I am soooo happy with this purchase. Now I need to get the wifi working. Bluetooth was recognized as soon as win8 was installed, but wifi hardware isn't recognized at all... Hoping its a driver issue.
One thing to note: there are no Bluetooth, nor wifi keys. Only the airplane mode button on the top panel.
According to Ken (just got off the phone with him) "Amazingly nice" SCM software controls the wifi functions.
Stay tuned. More to come... -
I might have to dig the old Prometia out of the cupboard!!
-
Clean win 8 environment is imaging now. Once that's done, I'll play around with the drivers, and report back. Especially NVIDIA. See if the device IDs are any different than that if MSI branded laptops. I have 780M. Stay tuned...

Here I am, a noob, who only bought the barebone on the phone with the 'Owner' of a pretty large notebook retailer, asking about how to turn the wifi on, or how to pull out the drive caddy. This guy takes his time and helps me through the whole process.
It is no wonder why there are so many fan base here of GentechPC. I'm sold! I replace laptops once every 1 1/2 - 2 yrs. He has another loyal customer. Laptop arrived fast, service is excellent and great price to boot.
THANK YOU KEN!!!!! -
Soon, I will install 8.1 Preview to see if the 326 drivers will install by default during the OS installation. Everything else has gone very smoothly so far... Will report back in 20 minutes ( Windows 8.1 Preview) -
Hi there,
I am the proud owner of a GT70-20D, sourced via a retailer here in NZ. I've been following this thread for a while and am pleased to be able to contribute to the various ongoing discussions.
I have managed an overclock (using MSI Afterburner) of +135MHz (Core) and +550 (Mem) and am benching the same as my son's PC with an EVGA GTX680 card! For a laptop to get close to this level of desktop performance is amazing really.
One thing I do need to update are the Nvidia drivers as I've been struggling with getting Tomb Raider (the new one) to run smoothly. It looks great but is prone to some choppiness (at stock and with OC).
I am very much looking forward to someone solving the driver install problem and getting us all up to a more recent driver release.
Cheers! -
All of the MSI's drivers install nicely (including synaptics touchpad drivers / hybrid power, etc...,) I"m VERY happy with this purchase. Beautiful, quite, sleek / clean. Just picture the MSI branded version without the 'red' trims around the control panel and the touch pad.
The touch, as expected, work nicely. With the synaptics drivers installed, multi-finger gestures all work fine. No issues at all!
Onto testing out the Windows 8.1 preview to see if the default drier (326) will install without fuss... -
I cannot think of any other reason for it.
One thing of note, the GentechPC video does not show it so it must be something new that was added to the most recent versions, so obviously some kind of issue was discovered to warrant the change. -
MSI _Lover
Few questions:
Does your touchpad have scroll and gesture functions? on the 1762 they disabled that function on the synaptic equipped units.
Also do you have the manual switch to disable the toucpad?
Since I don't think the resellers have updated pics of you unit, could you post some good pics in the bareboner lounge?
(Don't want you to get the ire of certain folks that will chime in that this is the branded lounge) -
Bad news... (Regarding NVIDIA driver 326.01 WHQL for Windows 8.1 Preview). Does not install. Windows 8.1 preview install went fine. After running windows update, it did not detect the GPU. It only listed Intel HD4600. It also installed the wifi on my AC7260. I then downloaded the 326.01 manually and tried. No dice. "NVIDIA Installer cannot continue" "This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware."
Without the modded infs (I don't know where to get one for this version, nor know how to modify all of the infs to sync...) I just don't see a way for now. Hopefully, this is just a temporary issue, and we won't have to rely on MSI to provide the drivers...
This is the only snag with GTX 780M. Other than that, everything is beautiful... Reverting back to Windows 8. (good thing I've imaged it). -
Yup! multi touch gestures all work. The touch pad appears to be identical to MSI branded ones. same shape, size, 2 buttons. Synaptics drivers installed fine, and I've also tested multiple gestures. No problems.
I'll post some pics... (outside only... I don't want to open the laptop back up again... -
With these machines being so different (cosmetically from 1762 barebone). I'm surprised the vendors haven't done a proper video review... I've compared it with pics from online (msi branded ones). Cosmetically thee is no difference I can see, except for the MSI brand logos and the the 'Red Trims" on the branded. I'll try to post couple of pics. It's identical...
-
Wonder why MSI laptops are refusing the latest drivers. Is this a hardware ID issue or something?
I've found a guy posting on the GTX780M Overclocking forum with this:
"So far so good on this one...Benchmarks are with a modest overclock, stock Vbios. Running with the new driver (320.49) from yesterday's release, seems to be stable enough."
He's running an Alienware M17xR4. -
PM me with your email please. I'll send them to you. Perhaps you'll have better luck at posting these files... -

@MSI _Lover
Just a heads-up...... you are gonna get spanked by the mods if you keep double, triple, and quadruple posting. If you need to say more, all you need do is edit and add to your last post. If you need to reply to multiple post, just use the multi-quote button in the bottom right-hand corner of each post.......then hit 'Reply with Quote' on the last post you wish to quote.

Ran the 3D Marks basics, quite pleased with the results and have gotten the same results as those previously in this thread.
I called tech support today about trackpad, suggested downloading drivers again, but after I went to restart had updates, while Windows 8 is installing its updates, I started using the mouse and noticed it wasn't having the issues as previously mentioned.
I quite like the laptop and the wife and I both enjoy the keyboard lights!!! I installed Guild Wars 2, steam and Borderlands 2 and man do they seem to rock.
I'm going to try another go with 3dmark tomorrow and post results with and without hyper power.

Lol. I'm surprised I didn't get yelled at for my Memory & thermal paste instal guide several posts back.
I used the image upload tool to upload the images directly from my PC, but that seems to have an overall file size limitation per post.
Even though I kept my images small, I seemed to be limited to just 5-6 images per post. Thus I needed to break up what was to be one large post into several post's. I was rather annoyed by the whole thing because it forced me to both take longer to complete and use less images than I had planned.
Guess next time I'll use an image hosting service.
Doesn't matter anyway, the guide kinda got buried behind all this talk of Windows 8.1 and Nvidia drivers Lol! -
-
I haven't isolated the cause, but mine seems to "go dead" for a few seconds at odd intervals.
Also, I keep getting the "metro" UI popping in on me when I'm using the classic UI.
It may be some gesture thing I'm not aware of.
Other than that, superb laptop! -
Holy crap you are almost DOUBLE my 3dMark11 score, but then again I don't have a super raid 2 or 4900 MQ.
My score today was 4641. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-4700MQ,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-1763
I'm pretty pleased with my results for the price of this laptop. This is the first "Gaming Laptop" I've purchased, and it's also going to be a desktop replacement (just don't tell my desktop....) -

Here's my modified inf for 320.49 drivers for MSI 780m. Overwrite the existing one in the display.drivers folder.
you need to disable digital driver signing or install will fail. One problem 3d vision driver does not install (not needed anyway) so you need to select custom install and de-select the 3d vision drivers. Then everything should install ok. Let me know if it installs ok for you.

Performance increase varies. Biggest increase seen so far is on grid 2. Gone from 57 fps to 72fps. 25% increase. -

Nice! Are you using the latest SystemInfo Version 4.19 <---(Click Me!)? It appears you are using older version 4.

Is there any way to get the Dragon Edition design on another version? I really like it but I will never ever need 32 gigs of ram or 3 ssd's.

Some barebone (MS-1763) pics posted here --> http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/650737-official-bareboners-lounge-55.html#post9268817 Post # 543 As you can see, the machine is now nearly identical to the MSI branded. All of the extra LEDs are now gone (speaker lighting and under the laptop lighting). Take look

I don't know where this goes, since it applies to so many MSI-ers... So I'll post it here. I've noticed that Synaptics driver on MSI's site is quite old... I've downloaded the latest from Synaptics --> Drivers | Synaptics Everything works fine. I think it has couple more gestures to. This is version 16.3.15.1.C

Quick question. For a guy like me who NEVER (0.000000000001 % of the time) use Ethernet, is there a way to avoid the Killer E2200 driver that weighs in over 200MB? Is there some set of files I can install just to satisfy the Device Manager? I use Intel Wireless Dual-Band AC 7260.. I haven't touched the Ethernet / Wired-LAN in over 3 years... no lie...
Anyone know?
Edit: one of the (F6) floppy drivers like what Intel provides perhaps? Can't find them.. That would be great....
Update: Solved. Installed Killer suite, rebooted, then uninstalled it. Windows kept the core drivers. All good. (I like my machine "Lean" )
If you want to do this (Qualcomm keeps 2 services running) You need to kill all running processes, then disable the services. Also make sure the startup is also disabled. Then finally after reboot, delete the directory within the program files
 -
Folks: on my laptop, I'm seeing some 'undocumented' features on the power button here. Sometimes the power button lights up red, sometimes white. What's it telling me? Is it the same on the branded MSI?
-
white = integrated intel hd graphics is currently in use (built into the cpu)
orange/red = High performance Nvidia card is in use
so in games it should to light up orange. -
@davepearson Thanks! that explains a lot!
-
That is a nice feature so you are not left guessing which one is being used and possibly killing your battery when unplugged.

So while I was testing Counter Strike without an external mouse attached, and the max amount of keyboard keys I can have pressed as well as use the trackpad is one, as soon as I use two keys pressed, it cuts out the trackpad. Is this something I can l change in software or is this a limitation? I also checked this in the game Guild Wars 2 and sure enough same thing, as soon as two keys are pressed, the trackpad is unable to be used. I think the buttons still work but using any type of "looking around" or "aiming" is gone. Hook up external mouse, no issues at all. I've written into MSI support and so far they say I should be able to have 8 keys pressed at the same time, which is true, it's not the keyboard but the trackpad that's cutting out. Yes I know most people would say why are you even trying to play a game without an external mouse on this type of machine anyway? Because I'm a worry wart and want to make sure this computer is perfect before it goes along to far and I'm not able to exchange it for another one.
I also notice a little "click" noise when I press the space bar at times, is this just the steel series keyboard that I might be hitting it towards the edge of the spacebar instead of in the middle just making sure it's all good! -

Crysis 3: Running full (1080P) all at "very high" settings with 4x SMAA, 16x anistropic. Smooth... OMG!!!!
I've tried this before on my ASUS, but couldn't barely play it at decent resolution. Let alone, got to watch the opening shipyard / rain sequence smooth enough. So I shoved it and told myself, "One day..." This is the day. Wow this is beast! No overclocking, no 'boost'. Just stock settings...
Speakers are loud and clear!!! Sounds awesome! I guess anything's an improvement coming from Asus G74 sound lol!!
Gonna be a long glorious night. : -
A buddy of mine has 2 sets of these. --> http://www.kingston.com/datasheets/KHX1866C11S3P1K2_8G.pdf (Kingston 1.5v 1866mhz rams. 4 x 4GB) He is bringing it over. Time to clarify if this ram works on 1763 machines or not Will post a cpu-z memory screen captures. I'll say in about an hour... We know the Vengeance rams don't work according to tests done by Ken at GenTech. Let's put this memory issue to rest. Because I know many are interested in this...
If it works that is.... If it does, I'll be drooling... running 12 GB of 1333s here.. (scavenged from my ASUS) -
Sounds good and maybe they will work but i thought Ken said they did not . Considering it will take all of 2 minutes too test them though i would be doing the same thing .
You should also edit your last post instead of adding a new one because the moderators will eventually come along and lay the smackdown on your double posting IE one after the other and if they are in a grumpy mood you might have yours posts deleted or best case scenario they will condense them all into a few very large posts like they should be . -
has anyone installed the modded inf file drivers yet on their 780m gtx? Im curious to see how they perform in such games such as crysis 3 and battlefield 3 compared to the stock unofficial drivers.
