The lack of HK SKU's is deeply concerning...their main strength was not necessarily OC but the ability to use fixed frequency instead of turbo that would throttle down after a few seconds anyways.

Very interesting that MSI is releasing a smaller form factor of the GT series

It seems to just be the successor to the GT62. Pretty much the same weight.

That's exactly what it is. It's just an updated GT62. The GT62 had the 15.6" screen and the GT72 had the 17" screen. Although there was a rare SKU of the GT62VR which had an unlocked HK processor (6820HK) but I do not recall any GT72VR's with that processor.

I'm trying to understand why it's being called a Titan. If it had an unlocked SKU, then sure, call it a Titan (even if it's a mini titan). But there's absolutely nothing Titan about this.

Well just be thankful that it has the rare bullet-point feature "Heat Management". SOLD.

It looks like they also smartly (maybe this was just the 16L13) but the previous one didn't have a USB port on the left side. At least they did the minimum and put one on that side this time. And when I say minimum I mean it, it's only 2.0 instead of 3.1.

    EDIT:

Yeah I guess it's only the 16L13 that lacked any ports on the left, the GT62 has one.

Looking at the images, it's the SAME EXACT CHASSIS as the GT62. They didn't change anything.

Core i7-8850H’s partial unlock allows for DRAM overclocking and a 400MHz CPU overclock, but not more. So TITAN with a * ?

Looks to be the only BGA laptop (Excluding LGA laptops)offering a full-fat 1080 in a 15" chassis. AFAIK the AW15 is a Max-Q 1080. Looks interesting to me.

    @Donald@HIDevolution - The HIDevolution site gives the option of configuring the GT63 8RG with 2 M.2 drives + 1 2.5" drive, while the MSI website lists the GT63 8RG with 1 M.2 + 1 2.5" drive. Could you please clarify? Thanks :)

No one can guarantee that a next gen tech will work in current laptops, until they are released and tested. However there is a very good probability that it will be upgradeable to this next gen GPU, and maybe even the next after that.

Biggest problem, brother Donald, isn't if they are upgradeable. It's if the ODM's decide to butcher the form factors or not like we saw with Pascal, to lock down the systems to their approved cards.
    1) Clevo changing pinouts making their own cards not work on other Clevo laptops
    2) MSI (and others) changing layouts making the heatsinks not fit, and there not being new heatsinks available (unless someone machines one).

We already saw 980's upgradeable to 1060's even though MSI said it couldn't be done.
Another problem is MSI locking down their systems with the embedded controller. System draw AC restrictions are based on what video card is installed. Even if another card physically fits, and the heatsink fits the GPU core and VRAM/Mosfets properly, if the Bios/EC isn't made to accept the new card, the user is going to have to hack the EC RAM registers to stop the laptop from throttling. Assuming MSI doesn't like that down even more.

That being said, I would not recommend nor suggest anyone buy any MSI laptop with the idea that they can upgrade to new parts in the future. The best bet is to stick with Clevo, where our wizards actually work at doing mods and focus their efforts on getting upgrades working on their cards. And after that huge trade-in fiasco from MSI with their last gen "Double upgrade" path, I would not expect anything else from them besides their current systems working as advertised.

Going to correct brother @Donald@HIDevolution just a little bit :)
The GT63 has one M.2 "Combo" slot which supports a M.2 PCIE NVME drive or SATA m.2 SSD drive, and a second 2'5" HDD slot which supports 2.5" HDD's or SATA drives.

    How's that? :)

So on the MSI website, they list a UHD configuration. Every US retailer I've checked with is only offering the FHD option. I've never bought MSI before, but do they stratify their products by market? Is the UHD only palatable for people outside the US or is just wishful thinking on their website? Yeah I know 60Hz max not good for gaming etc.

While MSI does stratify their markets by Region, the only reason you don't see it in the USA yet is because it won't become available until around late May. Chances are it won't be available anywhere else until then either.

So, I have the Titan-048 now. It works great except for a couple things... Random FPS drops in games to 3-5 FPS for a 2-20ish seconds (GTA V, Destiny 2, Resident Evil 7 did it) except Far Cry 5 is not doing it. This seems to be a widespread GTX 1080 issue with no real solution when Googling. Basically makes games unplayable. I might need to exchange the machine it looks like.

Also, the integrated Intel HD Graphics seems to be totally disabled with no way to switch to it or enable it. For some people this will be a positive but you will not be able to take advantage of any hardware accelerated video encoding. Adobe requires access to the HD Graphics chip to utilize the hardware accelerated video encoding features the CPU and GPU together. In my test with Adobe Media Encoder, this machine was going to take almost twice as long to encode the same 1080p H.264 file as my GT70-0NE with 3rd Gen i7 and GTX 680M. Not good.

Other than that it's the snappiest computer I've ever used. The 120Hz refresh rate of the screen is smooth and awesome. I was also able to connect 4 monitors to the mini DisplayPort using an MST hub and enable surround at 1920x1080x60Hz for all 4.

    Thank you for testing that!

These are the same temps I was seeing on my Alienware 15 with the max q 1080. I returned it because I heard that MSI had a much better cooling system, but it seems to be almost exactly the same. I ordered mine through HIDevolution and opted for the gc extreme repaste. It should arrive today, so I’ll test and post the results when I get a chance.

Would you mind taking a picture of the fans and the model number of the fan. @Donald@HIDevolution was saying MSI sourced new fan vendor this generation, proof in the pudding. Would love to see if we have a better option for replacement fans as the previous GT62/16L13 fans are abysmal quality

Does any-one have the MSI GT Series GT63 TITAN-047? I am interested in the thermals under gaming. It has the GTX1070. I am hoping this runs cooler? The GTX 1080 is a beast ;-).

I am planning on buying a stock machine as a FYI. I am not US based and factoring in the exchange rate/customs and import duties/additional warranties its going to be ridiculously expensive...

I just received my system from @hidevolution and I am very impressed! Although it does run a bit warmer than I would like, but that could be due to using it on a glass table. I am away from home on business , so I didn’t bring my cooling pad with me...

The only game I tested was State of Decay 2 and I’m getting about 95 Celsius on the CPU and 90 Celsius on the GPU. With Cooler Boost on the CPU drops down to about 90 and the GPU 85. The gameplay does not seem to be effected at all, so I’m not too concerned.

Does anybody know where to find the original version of Dragon Center 2.0 that shipped with the system? I really like being able to monitor system information on my phone while I played games, but it recently updated and that functionality was broken for me at least.

Did you order a custom repaste job from HIDevolution? The system should never run this hot if they repasted it and they would have checked it for you. If you're using the stock MSI "Lairdtech" paste, then those temps are standard fare.

I ordered it with gc extreme and fujipoly thermal pads. Like I said Im not too worried about it, because the system works great. It could just be because it’s being used flat on a glass table. I’ll have to use it some more when I get home and check again.

    Dragon Center v2.2.1806.0501

After downloading the file, right click on it, go to properties, then click UNBLOCK from the bottom right then hit apply then OK before you extract it otherwise all the files that you'd extract will have a blocked status causing issues

Those definitely APPEAR to be the same fans. Same housing and fan blade (same notches in the center, blade shape, housing style). Will be hard to know for sure without the model number (it's on the bottom of the fan, you'd have to remove it).

Thanks for that. I'll assume these are the same fans that fail relentlessly as it doesn't appear to be from a different company or a new model fan. Hard to be 100% sure though.

I have the MSI Notebook GT63 Titan 8RG 052 - Looking for memory recommendations to upgrade to 64GB. I have not cracked the lid yet so I am not sure what is installed.

Looking at the Kingston site I saw:

"If more than two modules are installed the system may clock the memory down to 2400"

Does anyone know if this is true?

    Thanks!

Check the CPU-Z memory tab for the brand and part #.

I always recommend Crucial as their compatibility rates pretty high.

Has anyone upgraded the memory to 64GB? I am assuming that you h have to pull off the top/keyboard? Any ideas on how to do this? I was able to upgrade to 48 but want to add one more stick.

    Thanks.

I found this video which performs the steps on a GT75. Looks epic. Waiting on the RAM to arrive before I decide whether I am going to try the board flip or not.

Posting this in case anyone else is interested. After doing a lot of searching I finally was able to determine the model of memory installed in my machine using the user bench mark tool at: http://www.userbenchmark.com/Software

    UserBenchmarks: Game 111%, Desk 110%, Work 93%
    CPU: Intel Core i7-8750H - 95%
    GPU: Nvidia GTX 1080 (Mobile) - 123.5%
    SSD: Toshiba THNSN5256GPU7 NVMe PCIe M.2 256GB - 182.4%
    HDD: HGST Travelstar 7K1000 2.5" 1TB - 71.6%
    RAM: Samsung M471A2K43CB1-CTD 1x16GB - 49%
    MBD: MSI MS-16L4

The -TD means that it is 2666Mbps according to the data sheet. https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/dram/module/M471A2K43CB1-CTD/

The only place that I could find (in the US) that had the exact part was: https://www.memory4less.com

Hopefully it will work and my search will be over.

    Cheers!

How does this laptop do under heavy gaming? My main concern in a laptop is the thermals. Does it hold under 90c? My Alienware 15 was returned cause the cooling sucked and I’m done with them.

For me at least It depends on the game I am playing. Games like Wow never get over 65c, but games like Pubg run around 80c. The only game I have that I can’t seem to run without the temps reaching 90c is Vermintide 2. Vermintide 2 runs around 88-92c even with the Cooler Boost fan on. However I am still actually very impressed with this laptop. I had the Alienware 15R4 before this and it was a nightmare... Didn’t matter what game I played, the temps would reach 99c within seconds and it would throttle down. Dell refused to offer a replacement and instead had a technician come to my house twice in less than a month to replace the heatsink and thermal paste with no luck. I ended up returning my Alienware for this and haven’t looked back.
