So it is official, I placed my order for the MSI GT70 from GentechPC. I will be converting from Asus to MSI.

I am a big fan of the G73 I own, it has been by far my favorite and best performing laptop that I have ever owned. However I have no idea what Asus is doing with the G74 and G75 only having GTX 560 & GTX 660 GPU's on what is supposed to be a flagship gaming laptop. Those are mid ranged gpu's and enough a reason to make me switch.

The GTX670 is still not the highest out there on the MSI but its good enough and already confirmed it can be upgraded to the GTX675 (and lets hope GTX680) I do not see any products competing that have a GTX680 for even close to this price point and with these features.

I'll be building this lounge up over time and hope to make it as great as -=$tR|k3r=-'s GT780/GT783 lounge.

So bear with me in the building phase as I add a bit to it day to day, feel free to PM me or post relevant stuff to add. And by all means start any discussion about the products that belongs in the (future) owners lounge.

Nice to see an official gt60 and 70 thread setting up! I'm very close to getting a gt60 just need to save up a month or two of paycheck. But im concerning if there's a down side not preordering now, will it be likely out of stock? Would the price rise?

I doubt the price will rise or fall, but in the past there has been a waiting list on popular laptop models because the supply can not meet the demand and thus first to order are the first served.

If you do not "need" the laptop right away waiting wont hurt, but it does suck when your on a waiting list.

Ebay or even here on the forums is a good place to sell it. How well it sells depends on what laptop models with a lesser gpu that it is compatible with.

Going with a barebone model is one way to go straight into the GTX675 rather than upgrading. I have had barebone systems before, its usually a trade off.

You can save money if you only need/want certain things, but if you were to get everything that comes with the branded model it would end up costing more. Like a combo meal at a fast food place. You may get one or two things you don't need with the combo but its still a better value unless you absolutly do not want/need those extra things.

The other barebone advantage though is if you can outsource your parts from a cheaper place, but then warranty and stuff is all in your hands and so is support.

So how many people are going to buy this then look to slap an HD7970 in it? You know, a true next gen card.

I was already wondering if the 7970 can go in it :D

I see no confirmation that any AMD card can come configured in a system let alone the 7970.

On the Desktop side the GTX680 is beating the 7970, but on laptop side I guess they didn't really make the same progression.

Problem is Nvidia is missing its high end mobile chip, even then the 7870 gets close to 7950 performance (thanks to ROPs and not being burdened with compute orientated logic) but kepler already does not have that so we don't know who comes out ahead there.

If I can find out where to get a GT60/16F3 motherboard, I'll have the barebones edition of the GT60.

Anyone know if Optimus works with the 7970M or other AMD GPU's?

    I've got a question about the GT60/GT70.

Several different sites, GenTech included, show a different case on these. They show a sort of embossed case that pulls the logo sort of "out". But it's not in the official images and descriptions, but I've seen it in multiple places. Are they just wrong and it doesn't look like that?

This is the link on gentech:
    "Forged 3D Supercar Exterior
Continuing the unique design elements of MSI's G-Series notebooks, the illuminating MSI logo, which symbolizes the GT60's uniqueness, expands outward. With clean flowing lines and a beautiful black finish as a base, the fiery red lines act as visual ornamentation symbolizing a sensation of extreme speed, giving the G-Series a sense of flawless perfection. Using IMR technology, the GT60 is not only strikingly beautiful, but is also more comfortable to the touch. With a glossy, high-end texture that is scratch and wear resistant, it also serves as the notebook's ultimate protective layer."

And yeah, this finally got me to register/post..I'm thinking the GT60 is the way for me to go.

so none of the resellers are giving the option of 7970 for MSI products? Which laptop as of right now can have ivy bridge and that GPU from any of the resellers?

If you guys can key in on bags & backpacks that you know fit these models I would like to add that to the first post.

I'll break it up between GT60 & GT70 and then from there into sub sections based on price.

    < $100
    > $100
    > $200

Don't say any lol that is not always true, but I wanted to put together a list of bags used by members so we end up with a real life list of recommended products and personal testimony rather than just googling for a bag size and going off a picture and hoping for the best.

If it was not like $200 id try out that "dexter" bag. Not sure if I just like the design or the fact its the one used by Dexter on TV.

I am super happy with the included bag from Asus for the G73, so I will probably just find a basic bag like that for the MSI. Non flashy, non "hey im an expensive computer bag steal me" logo, easy to get into, and holds all my stuff.

    $25.00 - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002J9HBSE/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

Seems like a good place to start.

You forgot to mention that Asus G series is so tired. Asus has nothing left to keep their loyal customers satisfied, besides their reliability and sturdy chassis. Asus needs to aim its crosshairs at Alienware, like Msi and Clevo did, with their color keyboard. Look at how irrelevant Toshiba's Qosmio has become. The next gen of Asus G series will be joining Qosmio, oh wait, it already has.

Personally I don't care for the flashy stuff like the keyboard, its all about performance & price.

I like the build quality and looks of the G series.

The big let down was the mid ranged gpu that they are now equipped with rather than top end gpus. Especially when looking at 17" frames rather than 15' frames were I would expect things like that.

According the the G55 & G75 thread on this site, the G55 will have a 660 and the g75 will have the 670. I believe Gentech confirmed this.

Considering going from an ASUS G73 to a GT60 and upgrade to a 7970m eventually...any insight into which GT60 barebone version is the best bang for your buck if I'll be upgrading the GPU?

Thanks for making this owners lounge... :)

Just ordered a GT60 from Gentech PC:

    Blue logo mod
    Ivy Bridge 3610QM CPU...of course...
2x Seagate Momentus XT 750GB Hybrids in RAID 0
    Nvidia GTX 670M
16 GB 1600 Dual-Channel RAM (12GB standard, but the extra 4GB was free...I LIKE "free".)
6x Blu Ray Read/8x DVD burner
    Bigfoot N-1103 (2-antenna)
    1x empty wallet

I was disappointed that they didn't have any way to beam the unit to me.

So my local store has a sale of $200 off a GT783.

Other than a slight change in the chassis, a gtx670m (vs a gtx580m), a 3610 CPU at 2.3 (vs a 2670 at 2.2) and other slight changes, should I wait for the GT70 or pick up a GT783?? Is there a real significant reason for me to wait? I really wanted a GT70 with a gtx680m but I have no clue as to how long that wait would be.

Is the new CPU that much better?

WOW! I take a break from the forum a few days, and what do we have here....... a ViciousXUSMC? SUPER! Congratz on your new notebook, and welcome to the MSI forum Vicious!

Everyone here will be blessed with your skilz and expertise, and for those who don't know, Vicious does a great job with web pages, notebook reviews, and videos..... so with this thread, I have no doubt he will far exceed my trivial efforts..... but thanks for the acknowledgement anyhow.

Vicious, your conversion from Asus is welcome news, indeed!

Oh and BTW, I have been discussing the benefits of a GT70 with Ken, and when the GTX-680M models become available, I may have to spend a little time in this thread...... I hope I'll be welcome here. ;)

Also FYI folks! Svet's VBIOS Tuner For NVIDIA 6xx Series New version (1.25g) NOW supporting (Fermi) the GTX-670/675M too, and the GTX-680M (Kepler) is soon to follow!

It should be fairly easy to swap out the WiFi modules, correct?

I noticed that the 6300 in on sale on Amazon. Also, does anyone know if the 5300 is compatible with these new MSI machines?

Is anyone selling the MSI backpack to go with these? Or know of a good one to hold a GT70?

OK...need a little help here. It's my understanding that MSI doesn't include any kind of webcam software with their notebooks (odd...). Does anyone have any suggestions as to a good all-around webcam software to install on the GT60? Still shots, streaming, maybe special effects (but not totally necessary), etc.? Something similar to what Logitech includes with their web cameras?
    TIA

I had an Intel 6300 in my GT780DX before replacing it with a Bigfoot Killer 1103.

The 6300 had more lag, less signal strength and was very slow connecting compared to the Killer 1103 coupled with Netgear WNDR37AVv2 and WNDR4500 routers.

The GT70 stock card,Intel n2230 is a single 2.4ghz band 150Mbps single stream wireless card that might be OK if you are not far from the router and in line of sight.

Measure your connection strength and find a good channel with the FREE inSSIDer program.
