Anyone have an issues with the GS 65 not going to sleep when you close the lid? I've looked into the event viewer, and it goes to sleep but 1 second later it wakes back with the lid closed and stays awake. Manually making the system sleep or via idle timers seems to work fine.

using the powercfg lastwake command after the lid closed and viewing the eventviewer, it came up with the

    Instance Path: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_A370&SUBSYS_00348086&REV_10\3&11583659&0&A3
    Friendly Name: Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9560

    Being the reason it wakes.

Any clues what could be going on?

Check the properties of the device of your wireless card and see if its allowed to wake up your machine. Maybe there is a setting for that in BIOS as well?

Still having optimus switching issues with Nvidia Driver 416.34 and Windows 10 1809. After about a minute sitting on the desktop idling it will switch to iGPU but doing literally anything will get it stuck in dGPU mode resulting in terrible battery life. I have the latest drivers, BIOS, and EC firmware

It's not listed on MSI's website but there is a new bios version 10F available for the GS65. Mine just downloaded it through Windows update tonight. I'm still having the same battery charging issues while gaming.

Hmm, I don't see a bios update from windows update or on the gs65 driver site. I didn't even think windows update was capable of pulling bios updates down.

With 416.34, MSI Afterburner and Steam web helper could keep the dGPU awake.

There's no fix for the MSI Afterburner yet, but for steam web helper you need to add it to use iGPU in the Windows 's Switchable graphic list too, not only just doing it through the nVIDIA Panel.

Maybe some of you don't know that there's another setting that messes with Optimus other than the NVIDIA Panel.

My Windows comes in Traditional Chinese but I'm sure after you have gone through the following pictures you'll find it is easily understood.

By the way, steamwebhelper.exe is located at /Steam/bin/cef/cef.win7x64/steamwebhelper.exe

    1. Right Click on the Desktop and click on Display Setting.

    Switchable Graphic 1.PNG

    2. Click on Graphic setting at the bottom of the page.

    Switchable Graphic 2.PNG

    3. Choose Tradition type of application and Browse to the application you wish to add.

    Switchable Graphic 3.PNG

    Switchable Graphic 4.PNG

    4. Find the application you have just added in the list down below, click on Option and select the iGPU listed as Power Saving.

I didn't think so either. It happened when I switched to fast ring insider builds. Windows update pulled in the Insider update and a firmware update. After the firmware update installed my bios is listed at version "E16Q2IMS.10F".

Notice anything different with the new bios? Potentially fixing the Optimus issues on newer Nvidia drivers maybe?

Wow this actually worked great. I was able to switch to the latest nvidia driver and after changing these settings optimus seems to be working as normal. It still takes 2-3 seconds to switch back down after toggling rather than instant on driver 399.24 but I'll take it. Good stuff

Yes, I haven’t opened the laptop. The person I bought it from did so I’m thinking it may have come loose from when he installed the drive.

Is anyone else experiencing an issue with their built-in display after opening the lid with an external display connected? Sometimes my system stops recognizing the built-in display. I'm able to resolve it by uninstalling the Intel HD Graphics driver and rebooting the system, but it's inconvenient to have to do that once a week.

As far as I can tell, here are the circumstances under which the issue occurs:
    1. Connect an external display to the GS65.
    2. Close the lid, let the GS65 sleep/hibernate, I'm not really sure about about all the different power management states Windows has these days.
    3. Open the lid, power the laptop back on.
    4. Devices POSTs normally; you see the MSI splash screen on the built-in display, but...
    5. ...when you get to the Windows login prompt (and after logging in), the device no longer recognizes that a built-in display is present.

There are actually two workarounds I've discovered:
    1. Uninstall the Intel HD Graphics driver (but don't delete the driver software altogether) and reboot the system.
    2. Weirdly, disconnecting the external monitor causes the device to remember that it has an internal display. (Maybe, if this is really an issue with the Intel HD Graphics driver, the NVIDIA driver just switches to driving the internal display once the external display is removed?)

Anyways, is anyone else experiencing this issue? Does anyone know what the root cause is? Does anyone know of a better solution than uninstalling/reinstalling the Intel HD Graphics driver every time the issue manifests?

    Question
Can you SEE the bios with the external display connected and the lid closed, on the external monitor, when you try to boot into the bios?

I haven't tried to do that, when I'm at my desk, I always want to use both displays. Also, if the lid were closed I wouldn't have access to the power button to initiate a boot. I guess I could boot into the BIOS normally, and then close the lid. I'll try that when I get home and let you know what happens.

Ah, its' easiest to do this if you have an external USB keyboard. You do have one, right?
I mean everyone should have a USB keyboard sitting around.

Just use the external display in windows, with the lid closed, then choose shut down/reboot windows and then spam the delete button.

What I found is that, on the Nvidia GPU as dedicated primary (iGPU not active), it's impossible to display anything on the external display in the BIOS, even if DP3 (yes, DP3) is selected as the output device. It does absolutely nothing. Same goes for trying to display something through HDMI (which isn't called HDMI with the dedicated GPU for some reason), selecting whatever it says (Forgot what its called) does absolutely nothing.

If you disable the Nvidia GPU and boot to the iGPU (MSI GPU mode actually cuts power to the PEG port completely, enabling the iGPU and preventing the dGPU from even being seen even by the Bios, even if "PEG Root port 1 is forced to enabled", it still says PEG port 1 is "not installed"), then the iGPU defaults to the internal panel in the bios (no display on external), but, you can then manually switch to external displayport (DP2) or HDMI (HDMI1) and it works instantly, but I don't know if it resets after a reboot.

    Complete absurd MSI bios bugs.

    Hey,
I have my GS65 (1070 max-q model) for about 3 weeks now and so far it has been a good device. Unfortunately, theres always some rattling or buzzing sound coming from the inside of the laptop when being on idle and not doing anything. It's clearly noticeable when being in a silent room, and also, sometimes the fan noise starts to speed up randomly while doing nothing. Can you guys confirm this? Just listen closely to the right side of the keyboard.(from a 30 cm distance)

Furthermore, it's constantly switching from Intels GPU to Nvidias GPU. And as I said, I'm literally just on the desktop doing absolutely nothing while experiencing all of this. I already debloated everything that could cause this, I'm also on the latest drivers.

But the buzzing noise and the constant switching between the GPUs are making me crazy. Should I request a RMA?

I have a slight buzzing noise that's not really noticeable unless I really pay attention with my ear close to the right side but it really depends on your definition of buzzing. The same noise was still there when I installed an entire spare heatsink+fans that MSI sent me. I don't have the fan noise speed up problem and I'm running Windows 10 LTSB with Silent Option. My GPUs sometimes switch when I open certain Windows functions (which most people seem to have because of Optimus or something) but it's not intrusive enough to bother me.

Hi guys, please help me out with my choice.

    I'm thinking of purchasing the P65 1060 60hz (1,900$) vs the GS65 1060 144hz(2,100$).
My usages are gaming AAA on ultra and programming.
I'm not really fond of gaming at low settings for crazy fps, I rather prefer max out the graphics and play at about 60fps.

My question is, do I really need to buy the 144hz GS65 even if my fps is gonna be at about 60?
Before you ask, the pricing on the 1070 GS65 is 2,600$ here in Israel, too pricey for my budget..

I'm really leaning towards the P65 1060 60hz, is there a reason for me to think about purchasing the 144hz 1060?

No, to be honest, go with the P65. Most of the times, a 144hz Display is just an overrated thing, which is cool to have but that's it. If you're fine with 60hz and used to it, anyways, don't bother going with the GS65.
I have the GS65 and I even had to change my settings to 60hz in GTA 5 because it felt somehow way laggier with 144hz.

Both devices are fantastic, you can't go wrong with any of these. But considering the 200$ difference, go with the P65.

Personally, I still believe the high refresh is worth the price difference, even not gaming. There's a real bit of luxury that 144hz screens give to even general computer use. 144hz screens have RUINED 60 for me for day to day tasks. also , I've personally found less of a need for gsync or vsync and whatnot with a 144hz screen because even if you're getting 60fps in a game, there's a lot better chance of the frame that's drawn being synced to prevent tearing. It's all a personal preference thing, but for me, it's absolutely worth 200 dollars extra on any device to get 144 as opposed to 60.

Is this an issue or is it this normal? Ive been playing games on my laptop for the past 2 days, never once unplugged my laptop or even needed to (since I have an LC-OPOLAR06) attached to the vent I KNOW I didn't unplug it once. But heres my qualm, yesterday I had my laptop at 97% so it could stop charging and I would be drawing power from the power adaptor instead. But through the day I started noticing my battery slowly draining. Later in the day it was 94% and then at night at 93%. This morning I used it for a couple of hours to study (while I plugged in) and now its 91% (still says it is plugged in and not charging). Is this an issue or has anyone heard of this?

PS or since I turned my computer off two or three times in between, is it using battery or reading incorrectly upon start up? I just think its weird that its lower with more use

Completely normal. Blame MSI's battery boost for this. Don't like it, buy a Clevo.

I wasn't complaining about the laptop, I love it, I've had it for over a month it fits all my needs and the battery life is fantastic. I just wanted to know if I should get this checked out or if it's a normal, heard of issue.

If you don't game, regular panel is fine with 1060 60Hz as you won't need high refresh rate.

    Hi guys,

I've seen a lot of people talking about repasting the notebook and I'm going to try it. Unfortunately, there are some many messages and I kinda got lost here.

Is there any tutorial on how to do it more effectively for this laptop? In particular, which materials to use?

Sometimes when I start my GS65, it just stays for about 5-10 seconds on the empty lockscreen with only the wallpaper visible. Pressing ESC or any other key does not help. After these 5-10 seconds I can enter my Pin code.
    Any ideas?

Unrelated topic: I've just seen the P65 Creator model with the fingerprint reader in the touchpad.

Do you guys think it's possible to replace the touchpad in the GS65 with one from a P65 Creator? I'm not sure it'll look great with a white touchpad, but who knows.

Gotta verify the size of touchpad as well as internal connector. If not of the same size then it's not doable without doing some kind of cutting and modding.

    Hi guys,

My system started to crash randomly since the last week in both Windows and Linux. In Windows, I started to get these weird artifacts in the screen (attached). When it happens, I'm usually using the iGPU and it changes to the dGPU when it crashes (I know it because of the orange light).

I never opened the machine or changed it in any way; it's only 2 months old. The only thing I did was to format it and installed Linux. Is it possible I got a bad graphics card? Is there any way to check it?

Try using the drivers for both iGPU and dGPU that are listed on MSI's website. If you have an external monitor you can try plugging into the display port, that should by-pass the iGPU and should let you rule out that there are any problems with the dGPU.

I would also run benchmarks to try and replicate the problems, perhaps CINEBENCH or FireStrike and be observant for any artifacts.

Hey guys, you think anything could be gained by cutting down the Shields on the fans for the GS65? They seem to cover a big portion of the fans. [IMG] [IMG]

Well, it's official: the laptop just died.

It crashed again while I was browsing the Internet and when I rebooted, it crashed when Windows was loading and that was it.

Now, it's stuck in a reboot loop but it doesn't even load the BIOS.

I'd suggest you try different versions of the iGPU and dGPU drivers, the stock intel and nVIDIA driver released back in April which came with the GS65 are known to not having TrueColor work correctly.

    1) Uninstall your current MSI True Color then reboot

    2) Delete the folder under: C:\ProgramData\Portrait Displays

    3) Also delete the following folder if it exists: C:\Program Files\Portrait Displays

    4) Download the latest MSI True Color for your laptop: MSI True Color 2.1.2.0

    5) Before extracting the zip file, make sure it is not blocked by following this guide:

"Are you sure you want to run this file?" [Yes or No]

    6) Now extract the files and install followed by a reboot

Let me know if that works for you

Anyone know what else I can do to disable adaptive dimming? I already have it disabled in advanced power options but my laptop will keep dimming it self when I have it on full brightness and plugged in. Ill have to lower it and raise it again constantly to be at the highest

I know this laptop can turn off the webcam on a hardware level but is it normal for the mic to still work? I can still use the mic when the webcam light on the keyboard is on or off. The webcam is still off right?

They are independent devices, even if they work in tandem in software. External webcam's often have a microphone internally paired with them, but in a laptop they are usually independently controlled hardware.

I disable them in the Devices Control panel, make sure the driver software is uninstalled, and disable them in the BIOS if there are controls there.

I nice little smiley face sticker over the camera and microphone holes aren't a bad idea either even if you do all the software disables, malware can bring all that back without your knowledge, so a physical block of tape / cotton (microphone) is a good backup, if you don't want to open the laptop and unplug the hardware - best solution.

It's not difficult to unplug cables to the webcam / microphone on many laptops / computers, and if you go in to expand memory or add / change storage, it's only a few seconds to find and pop the connectors.

Most serious webcam users actually rarely use the laptop built-in hardware as it's sub-par compared to external units that are used on desktops - which can be carried and used with laptops. Keep it unplugged until you are going to use it, and then unplug it when you are done using it.

It's real, don't get eavesdropped on, disable the hardware as far as you can personally take it, or have your IT staff do it for you - as they do for themselves.

Take security seriously, as there are those that make it their job to circumvent all points possible to gain access whether you care about it or not.

Each device is running on their own circuit. EC controls the way how webcam is connected to the system through a virtual HW switch.
