No bent or curved screen on mine.

I have been using mine quite a bit and still very happy. I have not run any stress tests and I keep my fan profile on auto. Mainly playing Vermintide 2, Divinity 2 and Quake Champions. Computer never gets too hot to use or even hot to the touch. Its warm for sure but nothing i am worried about.

Mine is the best buy model that I upgraded to 32gigs of ram and added in a 512 nvme in the second m2 slot

I would like to have some details or picture or video about the screen. This is my only concern that stops me to pull the trigger.
From the test it seems luminosity is quite low. I would have liked a 300 nits one like my current (and old !) Asus NV56Z but I see that for msi g65 we are on average of 250 nits. I mean. I want whites that are white :D

I measured 280 on mine and that was only after removing the preloaded profiles. The filters just make it worse. Whites default to about 7000k.

Found a problem, found a fix:

While playing games - Destiny, in particular - performance would drop and/or I was getting frequent crashing. I wasted some time with ThrottleStop, OpenhardwareMonitor, external fans, drivers, etc...

The cause was: the "Dragon Center" MSI application was set to switch between 'Performance' and 'Theater' and 'Meeting' and other power configurations on CTRL+Number. (So, my instability was related to changing-weapons-while-crouched.)

I hope this saves someone else some hours of troubleshooting!

    Have a question for owners...

Will the 1070 drive two external 2k monitors (main LCD display closed)? Looking at running an external HDMI and DP setup. Will not run NV Surround, just different displays.

    Thanks!

New Msi gs65 user here, love the laptop, bought the bestbuy model. The fans are audible but not a hairdryer pitch. I undervoled to -125 (haven’t tried any more). I am just playing wow at the moment. He screen looks amazing.

My only gripes.... the left control key fell off on day one. It won’t stay on, the keycap clip looked busted called MSI they are sending me a new one. Next gripe the clicking is weird ver hard to press and you can only click the bottom of the track pad. I started using the tap to click instead of actually clicking. And lastly it does creak a little bit on the palm rest. But I can live with that.

I was going to comment on this. I don’t think they are late. In fact they’re right on time. Because what ever flaws people don’t like about the gs65 like it’s “flimsy” body. That won’t be an issue with razer. But no doubt it’ll have its problems like all laptops that have a go at something.
It’s better they release this model now then 10 months later after the next gpu release
Like they did before with their 14” model. They had to play catch up so badly

Edit plus competition will help drive prices down.
Razers 1060 model is significantly cheaper than they usually ever would. But it lines it up with both models msi have. Which makes the razer more favourable choice and I’ve ALWAYS wanted to try them out. But again I’m waiting for the next gen gpu

1060 is only a standard 60 hz screen and is $100 more. 1070 model is $300 more. Those are definitely Razer prices.

Build quality might be better, but you're right, the quality control is probably going to be typical Razer as usual. We'll see. That chassis is super thin and I don't see any side vents.

The Razer looks incredible and the build quality will be awesome - but we all need to remember: Razer's support and quality control is crap. If you want to buy one, make sure you get it from somewhere like the Microsoft Store that offers extended warranties and easy returns.

I echo the comments regarding pricing - thanks to MSI and Gigabyte we see $2400 (256GB) and $2600 (512GB) for the 1070 Max-Q model versus surely a $3000 price if there was no competition.

I do have a wonderful 45 day return policy on this gs65, so I'm definitely going to want to wait and see some benchmarks and solid reviews before making that kind of a swap out.. Sk3tch is right though, I myself would want that Microsoft warranty if I decided everything else fell in like. The new Razer is exactly how I wanted them to be when i sold my 14, other than exhuasting hot air on the screen hinge. Generally happy with my gs65 though, the quality is tinny and i know a glass trackpad would be amazing to have again, but the trade-offs aren't that bad, still a great pc.

I'm positive it isn't glass, and if it is then MSI did a fantastic job of making it feel like plastic, can hardly tell the difference lol. My fingers seem to drag way too much, especially comparing to how the XPS and blade felt

After returning an Aero 15 v8 which (even with a repaste from HID) was hitting temps of 85 (CPU & GPU) -- got the same paste (no pads) on an MSI GS65 and it's topping out at 75 (CPU and GPU) under load without any undervolting, though I did tweak the fans as suggested earlier in this thread. No idea why stock configuration wouldn't make full use of the fans, but it's more than enough here.

The only unusual thing so far is that the battery will get to around 92-94% and then show as "plugged in, not charging."

Nice that you can hit that without undervolting. Is that with a repast? And it's windows or msi limiting the charge cap to keep your battery lasting longer. I couldn't find a bios setting for it like in my OMEN X but I'm sure it's somewhere.

edit: just saw you say "same paste" nvm lol

It’s a full £500 not $ to go from the 1060 model to 1070 at the moment. And a 256gb vs 512gb ssd between the two choices can’t make that difference acceptable.
Didn’t see any vents as just had a quick glance on the website.
But as it stands if I had to pick between
The razer 15 and 1060 vs msi and 1060. As beautiful as the ms65 is. I’d pick the razer at £1699 than the ms65 at £1899 as the build quality should be a bit more premium and solid even tho the trade off is 60hz vs 144hz.
    The 1070 razer version has 144hz tho at £2329 vs msi’s £2399
So they’ve undercut msi a bit and I thought it was always the razer that was “overpriced”

I will monitor both threads as I’m in no rush. And I’d like to think Alienware cutting ties with refreshing 13 means they’ll do a similar spec with a 14” maybe.
I’ll hold out till when ever cos I’m not downgrading from my full fat 1070.

It appears once again, I'm suffering through another adaptive brightness issue. It seems content based not ambient, so some pages and screens will be dark, and others much brighter. The changes take a few seconds to happen, not instantly. Anyone have some know-how on this?

    I've now checked...
    -power options>display
    -Intel Graphics Settings>power

The profiles in dragon center mess with the power profiles. It could be switching profiles for some reason. I think someone else posted a fix a couple pages back.

I know all about that XPS issue, it had a Dynamic Brightness Control issue that would do exactly the problem I was just seeing here. Dell did release a firmware update for the DBC to shut it off though, my gosh the xps 13 FHD gets bright once you update it haha.

    Hi!

I've been using MBP for the last 8 years but I just ordered my GS65 and I'm thrilled. It's mainly for university but I'll be doing some gaming like Hearthstone, Smite, dota2, hopefully som PUBG/Fortnite. My question is, I'd like to undervolt it asap to keep the heat down. If I understood it correctly, you're suppose to undervolt CPU and GPU one-by-one. Is there a line in the sand or a critical value that I should keep in mind when doing so, either GPU and/or CPU (I mean if someone is sitting on the answer)? Or are all computers somewhat "individual"? I'm also interested in optimal fan speed during gaming, I saw a print screen here a couple a days ago, is it possible for me to just copy that? My main concern is to keep thermals down.

    Edit. It's the GTX1060 version

Sorry for all the newbie questions
    Regards

Looks like mine should here here on Friday. Has anyone found a good lightweight sleeve to put this in? I’m thinking maybe a MacBook Pro 15 Non Touch Bar sleeve might work.

Slappa 17" sleeves with carrying straps work well. Provided you can actually FIND the sleeve *WITH* the carrying strap. Amazon actually gave me credit first when I paid MORE for a slappa sleeve WITHOUT the strap and found the strap STANDALONE, then another seller WITH the sleeve AND strap together for cheaper. What a clusterfest...

CPU-Z is a good tool for hardware info, and the SPD tab should show the manufacturer and part number so you can order more:

Someone please explain to me to reason for this many partitions.

Also to an earlier question someone asked I have a Samsung SSD with Samsung ram ( 2 x 8gb) on my -054 model.
I know the drive is small. Just waiting for a good deal to fill up my other slot with a 1tb m.2 sata. Don't need the super fast speeds for my data storage drive

So My GS65 came in yesterday : and I get no sound. I figured it might be because excaliberpc had opened it up to put a 2nd SSD inside and maybe didn't quite get the speaker connection plugged all the way back in. So : I investigated today and it turns out the speaker cable is connected just fine. I've redownloaded the realtek drivers from MSI's site and reinstalled them. no luck. Sound works fine when plugging in headphones to the audio jack. I first thought it odd at boot when the 'welcome to windows' stuff started and Cortana didn't chip in with her usual instantly-muted "HI IM CORTANA" etc.

So : I have a favor to ask. can somebody please screenshot what windows reports the sound device to be named from the volume slider? Here's what mine shows.

Thanks in advance. I've been waiting weeks for this machine to show up and it'd bum me out real bad if I had to send it back. I'll be contacting excaliberpc later today after work.. I'm just trying to do as much tinkering as possible beforehand.

Just had this this morning!!! I’ve owned the laptop for a week now. I woke it up from sleep and it happened. Then I did a restart and it got hung up on the MSI logo boot. So I did a hard reset and it started working again. Windows did a quick update after my hard reset too which was interesting

Thanks for the reply. I suppose I'll prepare a recovery USB with dragon center before moving further. What bums me out now is that the last time I did this (updated to windows 1803) and told windows to "reset" itself, it really borked my razer blade stealth, forcing a redownload of windows, manually installing drivers, etc.

Did you do it from a MSI recovery media, or with the built in windows utility?

Well after thinking on it pretty hard, I caved in and ordered the new Razer Blade 15 and will be returning the gs65 to bestbuy. In short, build quality is less than I expected on the MSI, and I dont mind .5 lbs more for a unibody Razer. Plus upgradability is far easier. :( ... and i got a student discount at Razer. ;) I like you guys so I'll stick around on this forum!

so it's $300 more for the same specs as a 256 -054 model but with a unibody build? where do you get a student discount from?

Razer offers a student discount on their website, you need a school email account I believe, i used mine from LoneStar. Its 5% off systems and 15% off peripherals. It knocked the price down $120 on the 144hz/1070/256gb model.

so you're not worried about the quality control on razer products or their customer support? From what I've read here and on reddit it's atrocious

I am proud of this brave intrepid explorer. By the time the Razer Blade 15 comes out with the 11xx series mGPUs we will know if Razer has improved their quality and support and I will move to one. :)

I'm quite worried actually, but no more than any other laptop. The only laptop I'm now Terrified of is Alienware, I've had some baaaad experiences haha. I won't own this razer without a warranty though. Considering squaretrade.
