Does anyone have this laptop? Any comments about the thermals or any other information? This is the MSI GP73 Leopard 14 right?

Click on the link in the original post above to see the available versions of the MSI GP73 Leopard.

The thermals are fine on this model, even better if you get the Thermal Materials upgrade.

What other information would you like?

Was mainly just looking for user reviews on anyone who might have the model. I see quite a few reviews on the Leopard 13 model, however can't seem to find any on the 14, I'm assuming because it's a newer model but just wanted to know more about the battery life expectancy, and so on. Thank you for your reply.

You can check out reviews for the GP63 instead, basically an identical system with different display.

I gave up on asus and the decent (not as chill asus gl703). No fan control and dumbed down "control center". Laptop feels too locked down.
MSI has an unlock bios request in their forums 0.0
Also MSI's cooling seems more of a priority then Asus.
    Receiving MSI GP73 LEOPARD-609 soon!!!!!

Just received the latest 609 rev. from XoticPC. This machine, thank GOD! is the monster. Consistent 1270 on cinebench r15 multicore. Doesn't cross 65 degress during multiple bench runs. My compilers and machine learning work is on high gear!!!!!

Also using throttlestop for lower heat/watts.

The cooling is just a god send! MSI knowshow to cool. The 1060gtx is buttery smooth and temps don't cross 75 degrees.

Awesome machine! Good work MSI and excellent service from XoticPC as always!

    God bless!

Hi guys. Im considering buying this laptop ( the 120hz 1060 6b 8gram version).I also have the choice to buy an asus rog strix gl703gm (120hz tn panel 1060 6gb 12gb ram ) for similar price (1500-1600 euro, greece). I read that the msi has goo performance and heat temps but i also see complains about quality and stuff like that. I read things like "after 2 years warranty the msi breaks or the screen breaks or the chassi" blablabla. So the question is this good quality? I dont wanna buy a laptop to buy a new in in 2 years bcz the built quality is meant for that. Its a big buy for my usual budget and im afraid i will buy something that is meant to spoil. The second q that comes after is "is the msi better than the asus laptop i mentioned?".
    Thanks in advance.

Both ASUS & MSI are good in terms of quality, performance, and value. Quality isn't really an issue after two years, especially if you baby your stuff and take good care of them. If you want to talk about it feel free to give us a call directly.

Thank God! I absolutely love my gp73. From the horsepower to the form factor (I like medium sized). My usual portable/mobile setup:

    1. MSI GP73 (steel series engine 3 allows to customize profile to turn off laptop keyboard)
    2. Mechanical bluetooth keyboard (cherry mx brown)
    3. Bluetooth mouse

Not a lot of traction in this thread compared to the GP63 lounge thread. Any reason why we don't combine the 63 and 73 model threads? Same specs other than screen size, AFAIK? Am I crazy?

That is because more GE63's are sold.

It is better to leave the Owner's Lounges separate.

Yeah I feel you but sometimes OEM can differ their skus per update of the same model. I do agree that as of now, they have same internals. In fact from my latest MSI GP73 opening, it has the 15 inch MOBO, as there's space on one of the sides.

Just ordered mine on Amazon over balck Friday. Ordered a 609, an extra ram stick, 2 samsung 970evo's to put in raid 0, and a 1tb 2.5" SSD. Wanted the gtx1070, but this will be better for me in the long run as I play a lot of strategy games that are turn based. See are older and coded using sqlite so wait times are killer if I don't have good storage.

Does anyone know if there is one or two M.2 PCIe slots? When I ordered mine from HIDevolution, they didn't have an option for a second PCIe slot, just one M.2 PCIe and the 2.5" bay. Also, I watched a YouTube video on the GP73 and it looked like the bay for the second PCIe didn't have a connector.

There are two and careful about the m.2 drive you get. It doesn't recognize the SSD kind (just tested this a few hours ago, since I was cleaning it out and admiring the cooling)

Please excuse my ignorance, but I don't know that I understand what you're talking about. I'm having HIDevolution put a 128GB M.2 NVME SSD in the PCIe slot. I know it will work because they had it in their options. Are you saying the second PCIe slot won't accept the same type of M.2 card?

It will. One of the slots accepts both which is the default. The second one (unused) will only accept the NVME flavor of m.2 drive.

Also, how's the bottom panel holding up? I've heard the plastic tabs on the GP73 are small and break easily.

I've broke most of mine in the back (which are the one that break and are annoying) and it's fine :)
Remember it's the screws that keep the back panel in...

actually I take that back, I used mine without screws for a few days and it didn't fall off.

Personally I don't see why the plastic tabs are there in the first place. They're just annoying when they're there.

I've just finished repasting and adding fujipoly (huge wins btw < 74 degrees now multiple cinebench r15 runs) to mine.

Finally got mine in. Installed 2 500Gb 970 EVO's in raid 0for the OS and most programs and games. I added some slim copper heatsinks to the mix too to keep the drives cooler. Since I despise HDD's,I installed an SSD.
Also added another 8 GB ram stick in as I ran out of ram just playing around on total war warhammer.
The next thing to do is change the TIM for some IC Diamond. MSI doesa decent job at applying the tim, but I can do a better job with better stuff.

Congrats on having seriously one of the best portable configs and at such a competitive price!!!

I took some time today to reduce TDP to keep the 3.9GHZ on 6 cores at lowest possible watts. So undervolting plus lowering the Max TDP got my CPU temps to <65 degrees. Thank God, an absolute cool beast

I'd love to unlock the i7 8750h but i have not time to look into it. The MSI cooling can definitely handle a 8850h/8950hk but no options with this processors. I wonder if intel puts constraints on OEM makers.

    Looking at Cinebench r15 multicore,

    8750h - ~1250-1270
    8850h - ~1380
    8950hk - ~1550

but the price per point isn't justified IMO

Also why aren't we seeing 8950hk paired with a 1050ti?

Just some random thoughts and questions :^)

My laptops before this one was a GT80s with a 6820HK. Loved that CPU. This laptop is pretty good though so far. I love how much lighter it is than the GT80S,but that is to be expected. Different class of laptop all together. I wish I would have sprang for the GTX1070 now. The 1060 seems to be relatively weak, but I am comparing it to an SLI setup. Haha

Also, Attached a pic of how mine looks now with the NVMe drives with the heatsinks and such. Next up is new TIM.

They were only $8 a piece. With my GT80, there were no heatsinks, just a small piece of aluminum. It did an alright job, but I wanted these to stay nice and cool to keep from any kind of throttling or any kind of craziness. So far, they wisk the heat right away, and it has worked well, but it has only been a day. If there is interest, I can post a link to the heatsinks. It was the only ones I could find that were low profile enough to fit under the cover.

Copper has a higher conductivity than aluminum. Meaning it is easier for the copper to transfer heat into itself and has a higher threshold of heat absorption. It is because copper is a heavier element than aluminum. However, aluminum can more easily transfer heat to a medium like air due to its lower density and lower threshold of heat absorption. So, in reality, it is kind of a toss up in this instance, especially when we are talking about a low airflow area like where these are located. I like the way the copper looks, and it does an outstanding job. Just make sure you get the lowest profile possible as the little 2mm ones I got don't seem to have much room between them and the back cover.

Found the copper for even cheaper also.

I believe they are x4 when used seperately, but when both are used it drops to x2. There isn't a lot of info on this online, but my raid 0 configuration was not very linear. With 1 drive I was getting 2750Mb/s, and then I did my raid and only getting 3250Mb/s.

Not terribly sure, but this is my experience with it so far.

    Hi guys!
I have this laptop with the GTX 1050 Ti and am facing some problems.
    Here some facts:
I tried to render a video and suddenly i saw that the CPU clock goes down.

Downloaded XTU, ThrottleStop, CPU-Z and HWMONITOR to see whats happening.

Well, at XTU i have a power limit that drops my TDP from 55W to 35-45W.
Also i open ThrottleStop for any extra info and i have a Ticked Throttle box. When i pressed the Limits button it showed PL2 YELLOW and when it was throttling the box gone RED. After a while PL2 stopped blinking RED&YELLOWand PL1 came up with RED box.

On HWMonitor i saw that the temps gone from 75 to 86 celsius.

One last thing on XTU it doesn't show me the Thermal Throttling! Only Power Limit Throttling.

    Any advice?

Oh wow. I'd say go to the bios and look for the power supply setting and see if there's at least 90 somewhere. It should not be power throttling. Check Dragon Center and make sure you're on Turbo mode and fans are maxed out for the sake of testing.

I miss my HK laptops. Even the 4 core HK 6820HK's I had did great. MY GT80 could overclock easily to 4.3GHZ on all 4 cores very easily. But that thing was a beast with cooling. At one point I had it up to 4.5GHZ, but wanted to keep the laptop for longer than the overvolting would allow. But it did 4.3 on stock volts after I changed the TIM to IC Diamond.

In BIOS I see only normal options.
    No power options.
Maybe with a BIOS mod ?
