Few differences I noted while comparing are the track pad and depending on model the screen aside from the case lighting on lid and visual appearance.
A few models of the GP line come with a poor color gamut display 45%ntsc think 60hz and at least two currently spec with the better 94%ntsc 120hz panel so if panel matters keep that in mind.
Per images the GP line has a trackpad part of case and the GE has a trackpad, which performs better I do not know.

I have a Question as I too am looking into a new laptop and a GE, GP are in my consideration. I assume the lighting on the lid can be turned off?

 

In Thailand all the models say 45% NTSC. I don't know anything about panel manufacturing but 45% seems like a low target to aim for.

I started programming on green and amber monitors and B&W output on TVs. It seems like they are going backwards.

Anyway, I am having a small (but bothersome) issue, and I was wondering if anyone else was as well. After upgrading to the latest Windows 10 Spring Creator's Update, I noticed that the GPU is being used within Windows frequently (the blue indicator turns red periodically). I reset back to factory standards to remove the update, and this no longer occurs; so I can confirm that it is the update itself that is the problem.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Go to PC Settings > Privacy > Background Apps

Then uncheck all the apps there or simply turn of Let apps run in the background

After doing that, if you have Google Chrome installed, go to Settings > Scroll to the end then hit Advanced, then scroll down more and uncheck Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed

 

Does any-one have any info on the Leopard-428? It has the GTX 1070 - looks like its the full chip. It seems like a new SKU and I see Newegg is selling this.

I can’t find any additional info aside from the spec sheet at MSI.

Hi, I am considering buying the GP63 with 120Hz TN panel. Can anyone share your thoughts about this panel? How good is it compare to an low-end IPS screen? Is it good enough for basic video/photo editing? I've tried to find reviews online, horizontal viewing angle seems decent, it is bright and color reproduction is OK, still I think getting information from owner is great as well.

 

Its great.... i find the screen extremely clear, sharp, bright and vibrant. Viewing angle is not an issue.... i hardly notice it... but i'm sure if you are really picky, looking at a wide angle, you can notice very slight difference in image quality(looks a little little little darker) but it is non the less really good. But now there is Asus Rog Strix Hero ii... check that out first before you decide.

Leopard GP63 is a great laptop... i've been using it for a month already... super stable, reliable, fast, cool but a bit fragile.... but that was expected when I decided to go for the GP series... sacrifice on the chassis for great internals...

From what I have experienced the screen is of good quality. Video and photo editing basics would be fine. I like it a bit better than some of the lower end IPS since you won't run into the lightbleed issues that can occur with the IPS. You may be able to also do some screen calibrations to help with the colors, if that is a concern.

 

These are the temperatures after performing
1). Unigine Superposition benchmark at 1080p extreme, 4k optimised, 8k optimised settings
2). Cinebench was run 2 times at the 2nd time it ran with unigine superposition at 4k optimised resolution
3). asus realbench was used to stress for 15 minutes at 60%of the total ram, then realbench's benchmark was ran for 3 times back to back.

this was all done at turbo mode with fan speed at its maximum values.

average temp were 75-80C for cpu at realbench's stress test and 65-70C at rest of the tests.
the gpu never went above 75C
the average temps given in pic were after 3 minutes of all the testing.

ambient temp.- 31.9C

Just received the laptop, did a clean Windows install and some benchmarks.
Break 1200 Cinebench (tried to tinker around and subsequent runs just got worse) and 18600 Firestike seems pretty good
CPU temps are below 80 while GPU around 70 with Auto Fan.

Other thoughts:
- The screen is great, despite being a TN panel, I wouldn't even notice without reading the specs.
- Steelseries Keyboard is great.
- Touchpad is meh. Install Windows Precision driver and still can't use 3 finger gesture
- Speaker is loud, but not impressive.
- The hinge is stiff, laptop cannot be opened with 1 hand.
- Cooler Boost Fan can reduce temps about 10C,but the laptop gets uncomfortably loud.

 

There is a 400 rpm difference between my laptop fans' speed when running in Cooler Boost mode.

CPU max fan speed = 5400 rpm - 5500 rpm
GPU max fan speed = 5800 rpm - 5900 rpm

Anyone having the same numbers?

For those who are interested in undervolting, you can use this as a reference. Tested the system and it runs cooler and stable with no problems. When playing Witcher 3 with ultra settings, cpu runs cooler than gpu most of the time. CPU frequency spikes are common and will only reach max frequency when necessary. Decided to stay away from Intel's (Throttlestop configured) Speed Shift and rely on MSI's Shift instead (detected conflicts when they work together), it works out better for me without it enabled.

Below, a screenshot of Witcher 3 in ultra settings, running in comfort mode without cooler boost. Windows battery power setting set to balanced with slider in the middle.

Ambient temperature: 26 Deg C

 

I uninstalled the Dragon Center, it seems to do more harm than good for me. TBH I would never turn on Cooler boost unless I absolutely have to since the noise is just intorelable. I just use Throttle stop for UV and SteelSeries software for keyboard backlit config.

 

Also, I wonder why this laptop isn't getting more popular. I got the 1070 from Newegg for 1499 and it's awesome, I don't think anything can beat it at this performance / price ratio.

Great BGA laptop for the price. I have that 120Hz 3ms screen in my F5 and it's seriously a beautiful display. Best 15.6" display I've seen.

Just found out that it is best practice to make the CPU Core offset <= Cache offset. Settled down with setting both to -135.7 mV.

 

I'm interested in it, the 1060 version. I haven't seen a 1070 SKU though?

Actually, the only SKU i've seen in my country is the GP63 Leopard 8RE so Intel Core i5-8300H 2.3GHz, 8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD, FullHD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

 

The GTX 1070 version is Newegg exclusive. I bought it from Newegg USA and then shipped straight to Singapore, still cheaper than the GTX 1060 + i7 version in my local shop.

 

Yeah, a great screen indeed. Before purchasing the laptop, I was worrying about the screen quality given it's a TN panel. Yet, the screen turns out to be even better than my old IPS screen. 120Hz, brighter, better color (after calibration) and no backlight bleed.

 

Ah I see. I'm from Finland so getting slapped with all the taxes it'll be insanely expensive again. Shame.

Anyone interested in undervolting should read this... this guy got undervolting advise from unclewebb (author of throttlestop). He got an improvement in his cinebench benchmark results from 450 to 1248 with ZERO THROTTLING!

This advise applies to 8750h processors.

I just use the calibration profile from Notebookcheck's review of the GP63. Screen is great for me
I just did simple -0.2 on Core/Cache of TS, and got one lucky run @ 1200cb+, further changes just made it worse
Yeah, I did most of the tweaks from Phoenix, seems useful.

You could always go into the BIOS and fool the laptop into thinking it's drawing less power than it actually is to prevent TDP throttle. How are thermals on the CPU?

 

Is there an option in BIOS to change TPL? I try to change the value in ThrottleStop but it doesn't seem to do anything, after a while it will throttle down to 45W max. (The value of Package Power Long in TS doesn't really matter I think)

CPU temps are 80max with Auto fan, running Cinebench in loop, if cooler boost on I can shave off another 10C or so.

 

How is the battery life on the GTX 1070 model? I'm trying to decide between this and the GS65. If it can get at least 4 hours for watching videos I'd be tempted to go with this one, even though I like the design of the GS65 a lot more. I don't like it 500 dollars more.

 

Ok, so I got into the unlocked bios option, what should I do to prevent the TPL throttle? Can't find any setting to change the offset of power reading of CPU @Talon

 

CPU Power and Performance ->CPU VR Settings->Core I/A Domain->

IMON SLOPE=50
IMON OFFSET PREFIX=negative
IMON OFFSET= - 31000

If your CPU still shows "TDP throttling" but is only reporting 4 watts of power draw and still TDP throttling, your Embedded Controller may be reading the power draw directly and overriding the Bios, in which case you are out of luck.

This tweak works on GT72VR's and GT73VRs and GT75VR's with come with 7700HQ CPU's. Someone had problems with GS65 or lower end models which do NOT have a HK SKU as a possible configuration for that mainboard. (the reason it works on the Titan models is because EC *must* allow the TDP to be bypassed for unlocked SKU's).

 

I got around 3.5Hrs watching stream on Twitch, display brightness @ 30%, keyboard light off with Power Saver. However, you should know that the 230W PSU is chunky, which defeats the purpose of portability alot.

However, if I attempt to game or bench while the battery is <50% (while charging), the system crashes

 

Does anyone know if there's a way to map the Dragon Center button to other shortcut? I uninstalled the Dragon Center so the button is kinda useless now.

Good job. I'm tired of people getting throttlebooks. That's why I decided to help people out, so you can have a functioning laptop until you learn to swim and buy a LGA Clevo with a Prema Bios.
This same trick should work on the 7700HQ on the GT72VR, GT73VR and GT75VRs shipping with HQ rather than HK processors, and on the stealth thin, and all of the 6 core Titan laptops with the H chips.

The crashing problem is strange.
The "NOS" cutoff for MSI laptops was traditionally 30% charge, not 50%.. They may have changed that.
And NOS getting disabled at <30% charge should not cause a crash on AC power. All that should happen is the CPU gets excessively power throttled when total system power draw exceeds a 'reduced' lower limit. The video card (on non optimus laptops) cannot get throttled unless it's on battery power. On laptops without optimus, changing IMON slope and IMON offset still circumvents this as long as the CPU reports less than base TDP power draw. If you're crashing, could be differences due to Optimus being used, and I can't help with that.

There is a way to disable NOS throttle and force NOS to re-enable itself for full power, when you are on AC power with the battery unplugged (which is the same throttle as if battery is <30%, which is causing you to crash), but this doesn't work if the battery is installed. That involves disconnecting the battery then changing two EC RAM registers. (register 31 to "09" and register 42 to "64"). If your SKU model has a configuration with a GTX 1070 and you have a 1060, *IF* the 1070 model comes with a larger power supply and higher power ceiling, you can change the value in EC RAM register E3 to match the version the 1070 uses. Normally this is a value increase of +1 in EC RAM register E3, but this may not always be the case now. From the ONE screenshot I saw of a GT75VR, a GTX 1070 user had an "80" in register E3 while a 1080 user had a "91" there. On the GT73VR, 90 is for the GTX 1070, not 80, and 91 was still for the GTX 1080, so I don't know why that was changed. You're free to try, though. I suspect all of the 6 core Titan and Stealth laptops have totally new values.
