Jrey may have left a guide up above, if not it's in his blog. Check the first few posts.

Yes it's significant Boost, but sure how much impact on real in-game performance though.

It's pretty easy to do; albeit, very scary the first time.

I appreciate it xLima. I'm getting relatively concerned about the spikes in the CPU temp at the moment. I just installed Windows updates, powered the laptop back on after the restart, and it's back to 90-95... slowly dropping down. I don't know that I've ever had a laptop do something like this.

In my own opinion I don't believe the GS65 was ever really made to cool the i9 chip. The Alienware m17 has a few problems cooling the same chip as well. If you are able to I would repaste it with LM. It makes worlds of difference with a small form factor.

Before flashing to the 90W vBIOS I would also recommend repasting and repadding it. It does make a difference but if the laptop throttles anyways it's just going to pull the same power.

And the Razer pro 17" actually uses a 100W vBIOS for it's GPU. The same vBIOS can be used for the GS65 but the 100W limit is only allowed by the Razer control center, so it just ends up as another 90W vBIOS. At least that's been my experience with it.

    ADVANCE BIOS QUESTION:
Can I change the System Agent VR AC/DC loadline to 1 like the Core VR to lower temps? And the GT AC/DC loadline?

Its normal to the machine to stuck at 99% charging in Windows? The charging light is on, the machine is at 99% and charging take 1 hour or more to reach 100%. 0 to 99% charge time is normal

Been testing and configuring my GS65-8SG from HIDevolution the past week and the temps seem surprisingly high despite the fact I had them repaste it with liquid metal. At idle it suns 55-60 degrees and while gaming, the CPU would go up to 95 degrees. Is this normal even with it repasted? Had to undervolt it 125mV just to lower the max temps to 80-ish while gaming and get ambient temps down to 40 degrees.

    Hello.

    Just got back from a trip to Taiwan and Japan. I am now the proud owner of a GS65 9SE, bought from a 6 floor shopping mall dedicated to tech in Taipei with the following specifications;

    i7-9750H
    16GB RAM
    RTX 2060
    512GB NVME SSD
    240Hz Panel

Was debating between the 2060 and 2070 but decided that the price difference didn't match the performance gain.

    I'm planning to do some upgrades this weekend with the following parts;

    2 X 1TB Samsung 970 EVO
    32GB Corsair 2666Mhz RAM

All of which I had lying around, so no extra cost.

Also going to repaste the CPU and GPU with some Coolermaster Mastergel Maker paste.

One question I have is regarding the thermal pads, what thickness of thermal pad is recommended to replace them? Has anyone done this and can recommend a good brand.

    Thanks

This is my post on Reddit for the GS65 2018 version (GTX).

I have the 2019 version now but have NOT replaced thermal pads yet. So this info may match exactly or not at all.

Sorry I could not be more helpful.

Thanks man. That will be helpful I am sure. I can't imagine the layout would have changed much but once I open it up I will find out.

I have ordered a bunch of different thickness Gelid GP Extreme pads because the Fujjipoly pads are not available in my country.

Voltage regulator and cooling are different on those two, Blade Pro maybe can be compared with gs75 not 65. On that score power limit isn’t moved I believe once it’s moved it’ll be like this dude score.

Let us know how it goes. I think I got the same exact model. It got to my folk's place a few weeks back but waiting for them to send it overseas closer to the day I get home. I'm definitely going to replace the thermal paste, probably just going the kryonaut route. Not really going to use it much for gaming.

So I have been playing with my new GS65 Stealth and so far I'm loving it. 20 minutes of playing with Throttlestop got me -150mv which keeps my CPU at 3.8Ghz while running TS bench (compared to stock where it pretty quickly downgrades to 3.1Ghz in TS bench). I've never undervolted or used TS before but that sounds good from what I've been seeing around the net. Going to play with it further tomorrow to see if I can go further.

I uninstalled the dragon software because it kept trying to use the RTX 2060 even when minimized to the tray (thus causing amber light and battery life to drain faster). I assume I don't need it with TS anyway though.

The one thing that I noticed in the dragon center is their battery optimization. It recommends I do a setting in it which only allows it to charge up to 70% and no more, as well as do a calibration every 3 months. I thought that practice was obsolete with batteries in the last decade?

Battery optimisation sticks even after uninstalling dragon centre. What I do is install every so often to check what new updates brings, calibrate battery and uninstall.

But your battery only charges when go -90%. Not 70%.
    You can change that?

I am still waiting on the thermal pads but will put a post up once I have done all the upgrades.

Also, has anyone else noticed that the indicator light for the iGPU / dGPU activity stays orange after a driver update. I just updated from the 417.77 driver from the MSI support site to the latest 436.02.

There isnt even anything running on the dGPU either. I mean, it is purely cosmetic to me but still strange nonetheless.

In my laptop I need to keep nVidia USBC and HDMI Audio drivers to keep Optimus working. Try a complete uninstall of nVidia (Use DDU in Safe Mode https://www.wagnardsoft.com), reinstall the nVidia drivers with usbc and audio (You dont need geforce experience) and check

Does anyone with Dragon Center still installed know: does changing the mode in dragon center change the power limits for this laptop like some other manufacturers? (i.e. some other laptop manufacturers will increase the power limits when the laptop is put in gaming/max fan mode)

    Thanks

It does make a custom profile for you in windows, but I haven't noticed a difference in performance vs that and the windows high performance. Cooler boost will net like an fps above what silent fan does just because the GPU is cooler. I don't consider it worth it.

No it doesn't. Turbo mode just applies an overclock to the gpu but power limit is the same.

Does it? I've never seen any extra option other than balanced and high performance in power settings.

And I've tested cooler boost vs silent option, CB is equal to 150% in silent option.

    What's beast mode lol.

I've had system cleaning suites create all sorts of profiles before. Are you using any?

Edit: Found this while searching for a beast mode power option

    https://www.howtogeek.com/368781/how-to-enable-ultimate-performance-power-plan-in-windows-10/

Tl:dr Windows was the one that created the ultimate performance plan.

Haha I made the beast mode power option myself. That's with all the edits according to the guide posted at the beginning of this thread.

I guess the MSI program just put it in there? I'm not sure how it got there otherwise. That's mildly confusing.

And no I only use afterburner, throttlestop and silent fan

Something @xLima and a few others may find interesting.

I asked a HIDEvolution rep about the pads that they use for the RTX GS65. They use .5mm, 1.0mm and 1.5mm pads.

I just replace the 1mm and 0.5mm on the gpu side with 1mm TG minus 8 pads. On the 0.5mm parts I just squish the pads to the same thickness.

I don't know whats up, but here is the deal. The RGB on my keyboard started to go bonkers for random keys. The Green just stopped working for a few keys. I went and got the keyboard replaced under warranty from the service center and yet again, today, within a month, a key has started to show the same failure of the green LED. Any of you facing this issue?

I did; however I never RMAed. I think @hackness is on his third RMAed keyboard.

I think one theory is that extra m.2 drive's heat speeds up the process of dieing LED, mainly green.

Same, I never used RGB and then was getting ready to sell mine once RTX launched and turned RGB to take pics and had 4 dead green LEDs.

    Proud owner of a new 9SF (i7-9750H, 2070 Max-Q, 1TB SSD but only 16GB ram) reporting in. :)

Previously had a Gigabyte Aero and it was VERY important to back up the recovery image of that unit.

Is it the same with MSI laptops? Or can I just pre-download drivers (Wifi, audio, latest Nvidia etc) and do a fresh install of Windows? I'm hoping to keep the FN+ shortcut key functionality if possible.

It works just fine with a fresh install.

I would recommend not downloading dragon center and instead using the steelseries application for RGB/functions and silent option for fan control.

Great, thanks for the tip. Some existing pre-installed software is already ensuring that my dGPU is always engaged, very annoying!

Windows key is embedded in the BIOS therefore you can easily install a clean Windows 10 image and it will be fine.

Just uninstall the stuff you don't need. I've benchmarked stock vs fresh windows and there wasn't any effect to performance.

Its not. I use dragon center and the dgpu switches off when not in use. The main culprits in my testing is either msi afterburner running in the background, or faulty drivers(need to be uninstalled with DDU then install new drivers)
