I’m interested but waiting for reviews to see if this is worth upgrading from the 1070 version of the GS65.

Where did your order it? I saw HID Evolutions page says not available to order it until the 29th.

 

I'm ordering placing my order on Tuesday with a “local” retailer and it SHOULD arrive by Friday.

Pretty dumb when the P63 which have an almost identical layout managed to have its motherboard in the right way...

 

True, but that laptop uses different components so it was probably easier for MSI to reorient it.

Sigh.. Dealbreaker!

 

Once we see that it's the 80 watt 2080, and that a full 2070 trounces it..then we'll know that the days of m-series laptops are back.
All so we can have 0.5" laptops.

LOL I'd be mad, but I also wouldn't be super surprised either.
I remember reading an article that a GTX 1060 sometimes BEATS a 1070 Max-Q in certain games due to higher clock speeds. Not sure what wattage the GTX 1070MQ was though...

 

I think it was limited to 120W or lower.

The 1070 max Q was on average 10-20% faster than an unlocked 1060 I think. The worrysome part is that the base RTX2060 will definitely be faster than a 2070 max q, rated at the same power.

But we will see, I am interested in the max q 2080. Rumors online point to 20% faster than 1080 max Q which would but it squarely around stock normal 1080 performance. I hope so.

 

I remember Nvidia stating in their CES press conference that the 2080 Max-Q will be faster than the 1080 Desktop. If that holds true and their DLSS + RTX takes off, I’ll be in visual and performance heaven!

My main interest is 4K performance. Even if clocks are a bit lower, the extra cores and extra memory bandwidth is bound to help with minimum performance at 4K. I am happy with my current GTX1080 but there are games where I see a wide gap in minimum vs average and I hope to close that gap with the 2080 Max Q.

 

For me, it’s 1080P performance. I know my current GS65 with a 1070 Max-Q will last a while in terms of performance, but I’m hoping that the 2080 Max-Q will elongate that even more. If this new GS65 works out, I don’t plan on upgrading at all until a new game cant hit 60FPS on ultra or new GPU tech is introduced.

The flipped motherboard doesn’t bother me since I’d have HID Evolution do the repaste but I’m wondering if they’ve strengthened up the case or not. I’m still trying to decide if I want this or the GS75.

 

If you can wait until Friday, I’ll let you know. I’m ordering on Tuesday and it should arrive Friday.
As an FYI, the entire laptop is slightly THICKER than the 2018 model. It’s either they made more room for the new cooler OR the chassis is thicker OR both lol

I can definitely wait. I’d mainly upgrade due to the fact that RTX is brand new and Nvidia doesn’t refresh graphics cards very often. I’m guessing it’s thicker to fit the newer cooler but stiffening up the chassis would be nice

 

I've pre-ordered Metro Exodus and after looking it's very high system requirements I've decided to get the 2080 max-q model over the older 1070 max-q.

Can't wait for its launch

 

It's slightly heavier than the 1st generation of GS 65, and they moved the trackpad inner, so it should be less prone to bending.

Following the thread but uncertain if do the upgrade to the RTX 2080 or not. Price in Spain is 3099€, I expect the same in Italy (at the moment, only the 2070 version is available, 200€ more expensive than the pre order of the 1st generation GTX 1070 that came around 2399€).
So, If I sold my GS 65 8 RF and I buy the GS 65 8 SG, I spend 1000€ to get a theorical +45% performance from GPU... Mmm maybe I'll jump to the 3rd generation...?

I'm pleasantly surprised by its score which is already higher than a desktop 2070 without any OC. Looks promising indeed.

 

Got some game benchmarks for the 2080 max-q from pcworld's GS75 review.

It should be similar to what we will see on the GS65

 

Any thoughts on where the 2060 performance would be at? I'm hoping without the Max-Q it shouldn't be too far behind the 2070 Max-Q.

 

I'm wondering if the slight difference in chassis size between the GS65 and GS75 will affect internal temperatures. The GS75 is barely bigger and heavier which is making me lean more towards buying one over the GS65. I also see that the GS75 isn't available until late February

I too am curious I saw on some other post on here that the MAX-Q 2070 can perform even worse than the 2060. I returned my Blade 15 from 2018 and I'm heavily leaning towards getting this laptop. I just hope thermals will be good as well as the flex on the speaker grill

Alright seems like my predicitions werent far off. The RTX2080 Max Q (I am assuming its the 90W version) is very close to a stock GTX1080. I will be testing in 4K, where in theory it should pull ahead thanks to considerable more resources available to it.

Yeah, that's what I "have" on my GT73, considering it's even overclocked etc. My GTX1080 performs basically identical to a non reference GTX1080. I also noticed the normal non max Q RTX2080 on stock is even over 10% stronger than my fastest scores overclocked, so its anywhere between 20 to 30% stronger than a GTX1080. Pretty nice.

For the time being, the RTX2080 is now known... I will check the 2070 and 2060. I am just hoping they didn't neuter the 2060 too much, to keep the 2070 relevant

 

Those thermals in GenTechs video are actually pretty good for stock paste. I want to upgrade, but I’m not sure the performance is worth the cash coming from my GS65 with 1070 max q though.

 

I ordered mine today, looks like it arrives Thursday. My review will be ready by Saturday evening.

Looks like core differential was addressed. And temperatures are not all that different from GS65 2018. On my 14000 FS score run I hit 88 degrees, so feeling pretty good about my last gen GS65.

I will also need to see how much it will cost to upgrade and if it's worth it. I have the 8RF.

If you're happy with your GS65 1070 max-q's performance then its not worth it.

If you do need the performance, consider getting an eGPU.

 

I travel a lot so the eGPU wouldn’t be a good option for me. I’m happy with the 1070 max q but I’m also a performance junkie. I think I’ve talked myself into upgrading and I’ll try to sell off my current gs65.

Looks like no problems with temp differential.

For those who get it if you could please post.

1. Stock temps on idle
2. Temps after cinebench's run
3. Temps during Firestrike and score
4. Temps with AIDA64 graph
5. Temps with Prime95 (AVX off)

10 minute benchmarks is fine.

I think I would need another 700 after selling mine in order to upgrade to the 2080.

PC World review on the MSI GS75, is kinda scary, not much performance gain vs price.

Thinking maybe waiting for 9th gen CPU with RTX if I can't get my current GS65 sold for a reasonable price.
