I'm creating this topic as I bought a a MSI GT72VR Dominator-033 from Frys Electronics, and for some reason nobody has create an official topic for it yet.

Link for the model from Frys Electronics:

    http://www.frys.com/product/8911443?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Will post more later about this excellent gaming laptop...

    us.msi.com specs for mine

    https://us.msi.com/Laptop/GT72VR-Dominator-6th-Gen-GTX-1060.html#hero-specification&sku_no=1748

I'm using windows 10 pro x64 custom install, didn't like the trial software :)

I might be a future owner of either the GT72VR or the GT62VR.
I have a questions to the owners regarding the 17 inch variant.
1- Is it true the screen suffers from visible backlight bleeding?
2- I've also read in the French forum how many owners experienced screen issues when it runs at 75Hz. Some members solved it by overclocking the panel to 100Hz. Can the panel in this laptop withstand 100Hz during daily use and gaming? I'm worried it is not the case, and then I must underclock the screen to 60Hz-ish, and the screen problems might be back.
I really want to hear the owners here so I can make sure my unit does not have a faulty screen once I own one.

The screen has backlight bleed. Only visible in back screen.

Ah, that sucks. Does it actually annoy you or is it barely visible?
And what about screen issues? Have you encountered color banding? https://forum-fr.msi.com/index.php?topic=7834.0

I have 0 issues with the screen, because the bleed is only visible on black screen. The only moment when its noticeable is when turning on the laptop and MSI logo appears.

So Xotic PC has a MSI GT72VR DOMINATOR PRO-257, advertised as having the 120Hz display. It's $1,999 just like the other 1070 SKU.

I don't know if it has G-Sync though.

    You're welcome.

GT72VR is the 17.3" variant. I'm not sure, but mine seems fine regarding backlight bleeding. No screen issues with mine run at 75hz with gsync on. I overclocked screen to 100hz, doesn't go further then that, what i noticed so far is that for example in an open window i see some vertical lines in the title bar of the window. I dont have it currently set to 100hz, but will perhaps test how it works out for a day/gaming session. I'm using dsr set to 2560x1440 at 75hz gsync on currently.

    It should be.
You probably will need to update vBios, Bios and all the stuff related to firmware in order to get g-sync and 75hz running.

Thanks. Is there a good central page with all the links for me or do I need to cherry pick them? One good thing about Alienware was that quite often they'd have all the updates centralized for me and MOST of them would be up to date.

Thanks man I appreciate your help! Really looking forward to checking out this computer. The keyboard seems a little inferior the Alienware 17 but I think I'll get used to it fairly quickly...that's really my only concern. Everything else (especially power and cooling) seems way superior to what I have now.

Hi, it would depend on your preference i think, if you want a slimmer notebook you should go with the GS one, but even though the GT is heavier, its got more ports like usb 3.0, better cooling, a dvd drive, and easier to upgrade components i believe.

I am planning to buy a GT72VR. I asked the Xotic guys and they confirmed that the 120Hz panel does not support G-Sync.

Which notebook should I go for then, the 60Hz with G-Sync or the 120Hz one? My other option would be
    SAGER NP8173-S.

    Thanks :)

Hi, by the way at least with the current firmware/ec/vbios updates, you can choose 75hz with gsync in the nvidia control panel, also panel can be overclocked to 100hz as well.

Can someone with a 1070 model please test 100% CPU and GPU load for 15 mins and tell me the Temps that they get? Also what kind of noise to expect would be appreciated.

Hi. I have the GT72VR 6RE-015 Laptop and I just recently bought more memory to add 16gb to the 16 I already have. First off, just to get it out of the way, I bought the correct memory, all 4 sticks work and all memory slots work. However, If I have all the sticks in at once, The laptop won't boot, but, if I have 3, it will. What am I doing wrong? My UEFI has bare bones options and none concerning memory. It accepts a max of 64gb so I can't understand why it won't boot the full 32. Any suggestions?

Update your BIOS and EC to the latest one for your model. It might be one particular issue with old BIOS and all 4 ram slots.

That sounds like a memory compatibility issue if you mixed different brands and models of memory modules. Even if it's the same brand but because of different batches they still can be different.

I think you should open a ticket to MSI directly, and ask them how to get the RAM working fine.

Get the 2nd pack of the same set and try to populate all of them together, see what happens.
When you mix memory modules you may encounter compatibility issues even thou the speed is the same, but there other finer specs to be noted as well such as timing and voltage.

    • Receiving and processing signals from the keyboard and other buttons and switches (e.g., power button, laptop lid switch)
    • Turning the computer on and off
    • Thermal measurement and response including fan control, CPU throttling, and emergency shutdown in response to rising temperatures
    • Controlling indicator LEDs

How is the 5ms measured on the 120hz 1080p screens on some GT72VR models? like...grey-to-grey? Or black-to-white? And, would this refresh allow me to effectively utilize the full 120hz?

Is everyone running Win 10 on this beast or has anyone installed 7? I bought this computer for work (I'll try to game on it, don't worry!) and some of the random software I have to run is having some trouble on 10. I'm starting to do a dual boot install of 7 but running into some driver issues so before I pull too much hair out I wanted to see if anyone else went through the same process?

    It's black-to-white.

Yes you can utilize the 120Hz. Notebook Check reviewed the panel, and didn't report any funny business.

Hi, I'm only using win 10 pro x64, on the msi download site one can't choose win 7 for os, maybe you can contact msi for specific win 7 drivers, although i dont know if it is supported, one thing i noticed is that there is a intel raid driver that may need to be loaded before installing win 7 if you keep the default partitions i think.

I've been trying to see how the GT72VR handles heat with a 1070. it seems it's always at 71° for one reviewer, and the gpu clock will vary trying to keep the gpu under 71°.
    Is this correct ?

It depends on how you configure the vents in the Dragon Center. By default, it will have 70ºC more or less in heavy usage.
But if you customize it, you can get 60-65ºC easily.
