I'm on the verge of getting a GE63VR all kitted out but the one thing I've been unable to find definitive data on is how loud it is. I like the Max-Q designs because of the lower decibels. I'm happy to trade performance for a quieter overall experience. I was looking at the GS63VR but wasn't happy with not being able to get NVMe drives. I feel like I'm stuck at the moment between the two. Slower drives but quieter machine on one hand, faster drives but potentially loader machine on the other.
Does anyone have any actual dB readings from near the fans and from average head position on the GE63VR while idle and under load? -

How many M.2 SSDs do you want? -
-
. Although, some online calculations of attenuation seems to indicate that would possibly drop the 70dB to maybe 43-45ish dB at 2 feet away. Would repasting for better thermal efficiency help drop that a little?
I was looking at a pair of 500GB 960EVOs but realized (at least from HIDevolution) it's cheaper to get a single 1TB 960EVO and leave the other slot open for later use.Donald@Paladin44 likes this. -

Please be sure to do some research about the REAL difference between M.2 SATA and PCIe NVMe...for most people getting NVMe is not worth the cost. See http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/nvme-vs-sata-ssds-for-gamers.802045/
Also, note that SATA SSDs boot faster than NVMe because the NVMe controller takes longer to initialize.Last edited: Sep 11, 2017Vistar Shook likes this. -
Seems like I'm down to the GE63VR and GS63VR and their noise levels. (ok, maybe I'm a bit of a sucker for the per-key lighting on the GE63VR). The 70dB certainly makes me a bit nervous. I wish there was a good number for average levels at working distance but I really appreciate all that you've provided here. -
Personally, I would go with 1050TI , as it's probably the most balanced card for GE chassis , but damn, $1.799 price tag is insane
@Donald@HIDevolution will those see cheaper SKU's as well?
Thank you -
My brother got a cheap 7700HQ/1060 3gb refrub/like new for $750 on an eBay deal and once overclocked on GPU around +225/+500mem and undervolted he is running 70C CPU and 65-70C GPU.
Quite honestly unless on an extreme budget, there is no way in hell I would buy a 1050 Ti laptop, much less pay the extortion prices they're asking for the 1050 Ti model.praetorianx likes this. -

The 1070 appears to be running just fine. The max temp for the 1070 appears to be in the high 60's low 70's and that's with the stock paste. A decent paste and an undervolt on the CPU should yield Temps in the mid to low 60's on the GPU.
The Raider is a completely different design than the GS models. The rear of the laptop is thicker than the front unlike the GS. Also, there are 4 discharges, larger fans and more heat pipes.
In regards to the GS, there is no way I'd want more than a 1060. In regards to the GE73, it appears to be handling the 1070 just fine. I trust HID Donald's opinion and he recommends this laptop over many others.

I doubt we will see the stripped down configuration from MSI, because almost no one orders the 1050Ti. They either get the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070. The temps on the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 are quite good...there is no reason to be concerned about them.praetorianx likes this. -
so whats the deal with that GTX 1060 price compare to GTX1070 model ? if we put the same specs like hdd and ssd capacity ? (ex; DDR4 8GB, 1tb HDD + 128SSD M.2 on both model) and yet still GTX 1060 will be expensive ?Donald@Paladin44 likes this. -

Honestly wouldn't be surprised to see the 1060 model dropping.

Anyone here know how good is the new Alienware 17 r4(2017 edition) in terms of temperature? I am having a second thought of selling my raider and getting the alienware.

What program do you guys use to measure temps?
I'm scared my unit runs a little too hot sometimes... GE63VR 7RF
CPUID HWMonitor said my max CPU temp was 96 degrees Celsius... (while playing GTA V)
Have the laptop for 3 weeks now.
Here are my temps after rendering something in after effects:

The pricing looks indeed weird in the US.
Raider is indeed more expensive in France, but most (if not all) resellers have drastically dropped the prices from 1700€ to 1500€ just this week for the i7, 256GB SSD, GTX 1060 model and from a whooping 1900€ to 1750€ for the GTX 1070 model. I knew the GTX 1060 model was properly priced after the 200€ discount so I snatched it right away. Now it is mostly priced between 1540 and 1660€.praetorianx likes this. -

Also, what's up with those two CPU cores so much cooler than the other cores.

Hey lads,
I bought the GE73vr today with a gtx 1060 and a 7700HQ I7 processor and I am really pleased with it. It's a shame MSI hasn't put in an IPS screen (as I can see the lines on the edges when I display a white screen) but otherwise the screen is very fast, and gaming goes well with a 1060 as it should do. For example getting 60-70 fps on Pubg with nearly all ultra settings.
Temps are really good, running 60 degrees max (haven't undervolted) with fans running at 3800 RPM under load (max is 5500 rpm but never needed it). I must explain the lower temps without undervolting, I have a cooling pad which blows cold air directly into the laptop. As this laptop is vented on the underside this works really well.
The two speakers and subwoofers of this laptop give a really nice sound, bass works well too.I can give two comparisions with other laptops : acer predator G5 793 793X - the sound that laptop produces is amazing and slightly better than the msi Ge73vr but that laptop is huge. :MSI GS73vr - sound on that laptop is way worse, lacks bass and the GE73vr is way better.
I have read reviews saying that the screen isn't very bright, this is true but it's still more than bright enough for me. Keep in mind that this is very personal. The RBG backilight Per key keyboard is very nice, I like the travel on it and response is good in general.
MSI really has done a good job on this laptop, they sure have convinced me on this one.
Cheers. -

that was huge temperature drop, which one is good thermal grizzly kryonaut vs IC diamond ?

We don't use kryonaut.
GE63VR is best for out of the box cooling. Even with the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 it runs several degrees C cooler than the Alienware 13 with the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060.mr_risks likes this. -
So since you have all the unit, i want to ask you what temps do you get in the new Alienware 17 r4 during stress test/benchmark/gaming? with the gtx 1070 and i7 7700hq of course. for both stock and repaste temps please.
Here is what i am planning to do. If the temps are same between those two model but just few C difference, i am gonna keep my raider. But if there is a big difference in temps i will sell my raider and save up some money and buy the alienware. I am in dilemma. Please help and thank you. -

There are plenty of good non-conductive TIM's to choose from. Do a good spread application, tighten the heatplate screws evenly cross pattern in small turns, and make sure you undervolt to increase the temperature reduction to the maximum.
Liquid Metal conductive TIM isn't worth the damages it causes. IDK why vendors offer it, they gotta be losing money on it in the long run.praetorianx, Papusan and Donald@Paladin44 like this. -

When done properly, under the right circumstances (including fixing what the manufacturer sends us), it destroys nothing...and lasts a long time. -
I've helped people with MSI LM with boutique vendors, and even with 3 tries and several attempts at fitment, there are some that won't work with LM.
In that case they got a new boxed unit and left the stock paste on, and it worked fine with stock paste, better than with LM
Lucky they never took delivery of the LM model MSI unit, if the fitment were bad enough it would have leaked while standing vertically in the backpack, traveling every day.
That is the recipe for disaster that only professionals can catch and avoid... you on the other hand as a DIY'er have that same learning curve done by the professional to go through, and that can end up with the "globlet's of doom" dripping out into your brand new laptop, killing it dead.
HIDEvolution warrants their LM work, so order from them and let @Donald@HIDevolution worry about the potential "drip-out"Last edited: Sep 12, 2017fiche, Donald@Paladin44 and kooltilldend like this.
