I haven't had my MSI GT780DXR-099 for long, but the stock wireless card seems fine for my usage. I've downloaded a bunch of steam games and played some online too and it works fine. No regrets so far.

Sorry to hear about the eviction.... from the "Cave".
To a degree the wireless card depends on your router. If you currently have just your typical "G" wireless router then the standard card will be fine. If you have or plan to have a router with the 5ghz band the standard card will not receive that signal. If you go with a 3 antenna card your router will need to provide the extra channels or you will see no benefit. I have read where in some cases with the laptop having 3 antenna and the router less caused interference issues. Some have stated it helped them get a better signal. So it is a toss up.
If you plan to ever upgrade you router to one with 5ghz and you have the money upgrade your laptop wireless to something that can receive the signal. Like the Intel 6230 Wireless-N + Bluetooth. Keep in mind if you have a long distance between system and router or numerous walls 5ghz may not be worth the router upgrade. -
A friend loaned me a 17" Targus and I hope to get something from JB HiFi. -
8GB of RMA is enough for 99% of programs. unless you are a programmer and using multiple virtual OS for program simulation. each Virtual OS can take about 2GB of RAM. so if you don't use virtual OS 8GB should be more than enough.
1: Custom configuration takes about 3~7 days depends on the upgrades you have. with 3 antenna mod it might take 5 days.
2: Ground shipping take about 4 business days so if you order it this weekend you should have no problem receive it by September 15th.
3: Bigfoot 1103 is known to be better than Intel 6300 especially gaming with multi player online.
4: Here is the comparison chart you can take a look:

Just like others. You are more than okay now with 8GB RAM. Maybe 1 years down the line it could be minimum needed for your requirement. I think Intel 6230 is good enough for playing multiple HD streams over net. Besides you can use Bluetooth to play music while you are sleeping via A2DP or lease likely synch your bluetooth devices. Bigfoot is needed to gain that extra latency which is not of any benifit (My personal opinion). I always switch back to Gigabit ethernet when I feel my wireless connection is a bottleneck.
If you are not going for 3rd Antenna mod then I am quite sure pinging Ken will help in getting your Laptop much before time.

i come from the netherlands i had bought here a gt 780-235nl notebook
on the box was written 16 gig ram upgrade but it wont work because the core i 5 only accept 8 gig ram i found out on the intelsite.a littelbit faillure from msior mayby you no a solution
sorry for the bad writting -
If the motherboard has 4 ram slots, then you can use 16gb. Intel also says the i7-2630QM only supports 8gb and this is not true. Don't worry about what intel says, 16gb is ok. -

Hi Folks.... I'm Back!
Sadly, I have nothing to report on the GT780DXR, and it still sits awaiting my review. Almost immediately after it's delivery, a developing and escalating family emergency, forced me into last minute cross-country air travel. I must say..... air travel has become a greatly improved and pleasurable experience. NOT!
I returned yesterday evening, only to crash into a deep slumber, after two days of stress and very little sleep. Fond memories still reside of TSA's enhanced security measures, and the wonderful feel-n'-gropes I received. Woo Hoo!
Anyhow, I am presently having my morning Cup O' Joe, trying to fend off brain-fog, bad sinus, and clear my ears. Later today if I have time, I will attempt to enjoy the notebook, and report back to the forum. I am happy to see a revived interest here, and it's nice to see others are already enjoying this new model.
Best Regards to All!

Hello,
I bought a MSI GT780R a couple of days ago. Everything is fine, except that on idle, there's this slight wavy uneven fan sound. It goes slightly up and down at all times. Is this normal? Are there ways to address is? -

i mean when i take the 2 ram sticks under the keybord out it works laptop starts
you know what i mean greets plexter -

Thanks to Ken and Fourier for your recommendations! I will definitely add more RAM, as I will be programming throughout my five years at Drexel and I think I'll be fine with the default wireless card or the 6230 as Fourier recommended. I hope to order this beast either today or tomorrow but my family is dealing with the aftermath of Irene (flooded basement) so I don't know. Once again I appreciate your help guys and I can't wait to use this monster

about the resellers I think I'll go with Gentech. appear to be quite serious. I really like this laptop, and the more complete model satisfies me completely by its performance
I really want a powerful and reliable laptop. and not repeat the disastrous experience I had with the ASUS G73JW-A1 which was turned off or blocked with a BSOD for almost any game ... that laptop is the worst in history, I would not live the same with this MSI -
. I hope that was not too bad. Wise decision with 16 GB RAM. 6230 will be faster then default wireless including the range. That´s for sure. The only reason I recommend 6230 over 6300 is because of Bluetooth. I personally am using 6230 but I asked ken to put a 3rd wireless mod for any future upgrade. In your case it might take more time (upto 5 days as Ken told you). If that is feasible then get 3rd antenna mod but stick to 6230. You can always upgrade wireless card + CPU in future.

Thanks for your concern Fourier, it was minimal damage (only the carpet was ruined; good thing we put all of the furniture on 2X4's beforehand
). Yeah I figured 16 GB might be overkill but you never know so I'm going with it just to be safe. And I don't want to add 5 days to build time so I'll stick with the stock 6230.

Has anyone had any experience unexpected closures or lockups? sorry but I am traumatized by the ASUS G73JW

When will we get some videos guys? Still waiting for some benchmarking videos, video game benchmarks, etc, etc.

new bios and EC firmware available on msi site
new ec firmware sets kb led to off instead of white -
.
No, none. -
LOL! Smart move, it'll probably reduce the keyboard lighting related RMAs to 50% at least! -
-
Well, I never quite made it to order the laptop. I went to powernotebooks.com and built a Sager NP8170 with specs that suit me a lot better for about the same price, so I guess I won't get to post in this forum any more
Thanks for the replies, all =)

Thanks for stopping by... enjoy that new system. -
The case I have can be found here:
18.4" Laptop Bags | Everki
They are not cheap but they appear to be well made. -
I have to say on the bag that looks great but I wonder if it will fit a wireless keyboard 18.4 "long plus the MSI GT780 ... I was also watching from Targus model ... http://www.targus.com/us/productdetail.aspx?sku=TCG216US -
That new system will patiently wait there until time allows. But once that time comes ..... no excuses ....... get to gettin'.
Welcome back. -

So I've been debating what type of hard drives I should get and I decided that I might want an SSD with a large HDD for storage. My two choices are the Crucial M4 128 GB or the Intel-320 160 GB. Would there be plenty of space on the Crucial if I were to use it as an OS drive as well as to install games on it, plus the increased speed or would I be better off going with more space and supposedly better reliability with the Intel?

I got the EVERKI Beacon 18" laptop backpack, it's an awesome bag, can fit tons of stuff

Making a decision is your own choice.

1) Dual channel if all the slots are populated with alternate slots conatining same memory type.
2) Dual channel if alternate slots are populated with similar memory modules.
3) That means you may install varying memory sizes in Channel A and Channel B. The system maps the total size of the lower-sized channel for the dual-channel configuration. Any excess memory from the higher-sized channel will then be mapped for single-channel operation only. Say for example you are mixing 4 and 2 GB modules then 2GB will be Dual channel while rest 2GB will be single channel.
By the way make sure to install memory modules with same CAS latencies from the same vendor.
Cheers -
I read that the i7 2630qm CPU only has enough bandwidth to support 8GB of RAM in dual channel, anything after that is run in single channel.
Does the laptop perform single channel & dual channel operations at the same time or just 1 mode depending on your memory usage? -
DDR3 - 1333 @ 666.67 MHz and cycle time of 6 transfers 1333.33 MT/sec = 10666.67 MBps(Max)
For two channels the MBps is 2X10666.67 = 21.3 GBps(Intel advertised Max Bandwidth for I7 2630 QM)
Simialrly for DDR3 -1600
@800.00 MHz and cycle time of 5 transfers 1600.00 MT/sec = 12800.00 MBps(Max)
For two channels the MBps is 2X12800.00 = 25.6 GBps(Intel advertised Max Bandwidth for I7 2720 QM onwards).
As per my explanation earlier if you have both the slots populated you will get dual channel at all times.
This 8GB vs 16GB is misleading and is for each core.
That doesn't mean you should expect that 8GB X 4 means 32 GB is what you can use in your laptop. It is further limited by Motherboard manufactures.

Which model did you purchase? Is there plenty of room for accessories? Lastly, where are the bags actually made?
I think I'd rather go with one of the bags rather than the backpack but I do carry extra accessories and some paperwork.
