I placed my order for the FHD model last night. ETA is 5-7 business days so hopefully I will have some time to play around with it and run some benchmarks before school starts in September.

Alright guys! Here we go!! I picked up my WS60 2OJ-007US this morning.

Here are some unboxing pictures. I will post more pictures once I get it up and running. So far it is a beautiful computer. There is a little bit of flex in the keyboard, but only if you press hard enough.

They give you the option at the start of what software/drivers you want installed. I'm not sure if this is standard for all MSI laptops, but it is a nice feature. Maybe there will be not bloatware?

The screen is beautiful. HWiNFO shows it as a Samsung 156HL01-102. Monitor\SDC324C.

    Sound is crisp and loud.

Battery is showing 3 hours 57 mins left at 92% on balanced power management under light use; ie browsing and youtube, 50% brightness.

While running a system scan (WSE) battery life dropped to 1 hr 41 mins at 86% and fans kicked in. Still a quiet machine.

    Congrats Korporal!

I think you and I are the only 2 with these WS60's.
I actually had Windows 8.1 loaded on the machine, as it has been mentioned to better handle the high screen resolution (I purchased 3k version). Pretty snappy little machine, and although thin, has more real estate than I anticipated, but everything feels excellent so far (with exception in the jerky mouse pad).

Awesome - very curious about battery life and fan noise. Sounds very promising.

Also, what accessories came with the laptop? Where did you order from?

Only thing that came with the laptop was an MSI sleeve embossed with the workstation logo that you find on the back of the screen.

I ordered it from Memory Express in Canada. It was the only distributor in Canada that had a local store.

What would you like to see in the video? The chassis and hardware looks to be the same as the ghost's except for the obvious Quadro card. I can run some benchmarks, check temps, and test battery life.

I will post some pictures of viewing angles when I get home this evening. I haven't had much time to play with it this weekend as I have been out of town.

Let me know what you want to see and I'll do my best; I've never reviewed a product or made a video before.

Since there have been no video reviews it can be quite beneficial to viewers and you as well.

A basic 3 minute hands-on review should be enough

Well my MSI WS60 didn't quite last one full week.

I have not done anything other than some excel spreadsheets, and word documents, and I am completely frozen in the "Aptio Setup Utility".

I have not updated Bios, nor anything else, I just got the screen of death while creating a word document.
Laptop popped an error message that said "Critical_Process_Died", then rebooted itself into the "Aptio Setup Utility".

Nothing I do prevents the laptop from being stuck in the "Aptio Setup Utility" bootloop.

After researching the problem on the Internet, it appears to be serious hardware problem, possibly a Crucial SSD drive failure.

Not something you want to deal with, after spending over $4k fully configured, and only using it for 5 days.

The OS is gone, or the SSD itself.
When you are at BIOS (Aptio Setup Utility), can you check System Information to verify if your drives are detected in there?
Also, did you make recovery discs using MSI Burn Recovery when you got the system?

Kevin, I had you do a clean install of windows 8.1, and paid the $15 for what is labeled Windows Recovery DVD - Help me burn the Recovery DVD
I did not make recovery discs, as I thought I was paying to have them done when the laptop was purchased.
In my packaging, I have the MSI Driver & Utility CD, and the Windows 8.1 Full Version Software Disc. There are not any other Discs in my package.

You can view the attached photos, it appears that 1 of the Crucial M550 512gb SSD's is toast. There were (2) 512gb M550's configured in Raid 0, that Gentech installed the operating system on. One of them appears to be ok, and the latter does not. The third and separate Crucial M550 1024gb SSD appears to be okay as well.

Have you tried swapping the drives around to see if it's potentially a port issue?

No Meaker, I have not taken the laptop apart to try swapping drives around, but thanks for the suggestion.
I would contemplate giving that a try if it were a few years old, and out of warranty, but I've literally had this laptop 7 days as of today, and I can't imagine taking it apart, and somehow being told that I am responsible for a damaging an internal part.

I realize that sh*t happens, but it is hard to swallow when my last $500 laptop lasted 6 years without a hiccup. but I spent $4k, and am already dealing with complete hardware failure in 5 days.

I've emailed GentechPC yesterday regarding the issue, but they have not responded, even though Kevin has replied in this thread.

After trying several other suggestions that I have read online, I have managed to get the computer to boot up again for a short time, but it eventually flashed the same error again, forcing me back into "Aptio Setup Utility", and showing me that one of the SSD's is dead again.

    So frustrating.

So I ran MemTest to see if there are any errors with my RAM and so far I have at least 6 errors.I ran 8 simultaneous tests with 2047 MB each and 6 of the tests came back clean with over 100% coverage and the other 2 tests are currently at 4 errors @ 81% and 1 error at 55%. I ran the same test prior to this longer one and only went up to 30% and got 2 errors.

Can someone shed some light on the severity of these errors? MemTest's website says that stable computers can go weeks at a time without any errors. If I am getting so many right away, does that mean my system (RAM) is defective? Should I return it and get a new one? Everything seems to be running fine.

Update: I ran a different test, MemTest86, and my system came back with zero errors.

Probably the RAID array needs to be rebuild.

If you have chance to boot to Windows again try see if you can create OS image by going to Control Panel > File History and click create image at the bottom.

Once the image is created to the D drive then go back to the BIOS > Advanced > Intel Rapid Storage Technology > Delete RAID Array > Rebuild the RAID array > press F10 to save and exit and then re-image the SSD from the backup.

If the problem isn't causing by hardware it will fix the problem, however, if the issues are hardware related such as SSDs then it has to be replace. PM me and I'll help you setup the RMA.

I ran Furmark and PCMark simultaneously and temps were decent. CPU core temps ranged from 86-92C and GPU temp reached 63C. Laptop is not at all warm, still cool to the touch. I only feel a little warmer air above the "jk' keys. CPU was consistently at ~3.4 GHz throughout the PCMark benchmark test; only a few drops, but straight back up to 3.4.

If both heatsinks are linked, perhaps the GPU temp can drop lower than 93C.

The GPU never reached 93C. It stayed on 63C for about 1 hour during the furmark test.

The laptop stayed quiet the entire time too. I'm not sure how loud the gs60 got but I can assure you that the WS60 is not loud under load.

In fact, it should be the GPU that can reach such temperature but not CPU though.
In our review and testing, the CPU reached 81C max.
GS60 is basically the same thing as WS60, except the GPU difference.

As far as I know Furmark does not fully represent temps, because on stock drivers/vbios, furmark is never run at max performance and thus doesn't really tax the system.

FWIW, I just received my custom build from Gentech. Blown away by it so far, particularly the form factor and lack of fan noise. Last laptop was a 17" 8+lb Clevo which was *loud*.

Converting to dual-boot Win7/Linux as we speak and have had to tweak the BIOS a little, as the student-sale 128GB SSD wasn't set to be bootable.

On the downside, I'm struggling with the touchpad. I'm not saying it's bad, only difficult for me to get used to after using touchpads with dedicated buttons for so long.

Loving the screen quality, though not the large ~3/4inch bevel surrounding it; it's a bit distracting, honestly.

Keyboard is the one of the best I've ever used, and I *detest* chiclet. Took a gamble that Steelseries earned its rep legitimately, and that appears to be the case.

Having trouble getting hibernate working in Linux Mint 17, but that's always the case. Everything else seemed to just work out of the box in Linux, though haven't yet got around to Optimus/Bumblebee.

I've only had it for 24 hours now, but so far, very happy with my selection.

FYI, I'm finding that the battery life isn't particularly good. I've been using Linux almost exclusively, but even with all the powertop tunables set, I routinely get around 2-2.25 hours of life. That's with screen at mid-brightness, using the NVIDIA proprietary driver, with a workload of light software development and Web browsing.

Interested to hear if Windows users fare any better.

I get about 3 hours on Windows with light use, word documents and browsing. Once I start using SolidWorks, I need to plug it in. With a 100% battery and using SolidWorks, I get around the 2 hour life.

Hey guys, new to the forum. Have had the WS60 for nearly a month and thus far am pleased with it but concur with others re: the touchpad, screen edge and poor (IMO) battery life. Main purpose for getting this was video editing on the go (Sony Vegas Pro 12) and thus I settled on this vs. the GS60 as I wanted to take advantage of GPU acceleration with the Quardro K2100M. I haven't had too much time to do benchmarks but initial testing indicates CPU rendering seems to be faster than GPU (at least with Main Concept AVC). Will conduct more testing as time allows but for those interested, here's my unboxing vid:

You won't get much battery life for sure if you do video editing on the go since it requires constant use of CPU and GPU.
Also, you lose 100W of power while on battery therefore GPU cannot perform much due to priority is focused on the processor.

I should clarify that my experience echo's distob's and korporal's (approx. 2-3 hrs on light windows/browser use) and not during video editing.

Nice vid, no need to apologize for the quality - looked just fine to me!

I just wanted to comment on the power supply. My prior workstation laptop, a Clevo, had a serious brick for a power supply. It was about twice as high and twice as heavy (at least) as that of the WS60. I was really happy to see how slim and light it was when I unboxed my WS60 (and I'd guess it's about 1lb). I suppose it's all relative :)

    Hey guys!

Rob Farber of TechEnablement recently did an awesome review of the MSI WS60 on his blog here:

MSI WS60 Mobile Workstation - Awesome CUDA, Linux, and Window Mobility

...the high-resolution 2880×1620 IPS display is color accurate, easy on the eyes and shows off your work with aplomb. When needed, multiple USB-3.0 and a Thunderbolt 2 port allows me to expand my WS60 beyond the capabilities of my current HP Z800 workstation in almost every aspect. Need a 16 TB RAID for big data? No problem. How about a dual-monitor 5k x 1600 display? Again no problem and it works great in Linux. In short, this “laptop” offers no-compromises for heavy Linux and Windows users yet is easy to carry and looks great even when sitting on conference tables holding many machines exhibiting Apple logos.

Tell me what you guys think!

    Hey guys,

So the ws60 finally seems to be available in the UK, however not the 3K.

As it is intended to be used for grading, editing and 3d work is it worth to hold out until the 3K is being sold?

It's probably isn't imported into UK, because the 3K model is actually available in the US.

So you will have to decide whether you truly needs 3K or not.
The other thing is, if you do need such high resolution to work with then it's ideal for your eyes to use a larger external monitor rather than 15.6" internal LCD screen.

It's up to you, if a 3k display would help your work flow then certainly.

    Hey,
Not an owner, but this seems like a good place to ask about this laptop.
Does anyone know if you can boot up with the nvidia gpu disabled, and just the iris pro on the processor?
Is there like a BIOS option for this?
    Thanks in advance

Not WS60, but GT72 can do it.

    Can anyone confirm this?
Also, does the computer run optimus or only the k2100m?
If only the nvidia, is it possible to enable the integrated graphics to enable optimus?
