Welcome to the MSI WS60 Official Thread
*This thread is subject to updates and is a work in progress. Feedback is greatly appreciated; as are reviews, information, and/or questions.

The price of the MSI WS60 is starting at $2199.00 USD (Model 1) and $2499.00 USD (Model 2).
*scroll down for a list of retailers

On Wednesday, 16 Jul 2014, MSI introduced the Ultra-Thin 15.6” Workstation Laptop WS60; its competition being the Dell Precision M3800, HP ZBook & EliteBook line, and Lenovo's slightly thicker W series.

Built on an Ultrabook-sized chasis, the 1.9 Kg WS60 is roughly 4.36 pounds and 19.9 mm thin - ideal for the editor on-the-go, engineer, or professional seeking pristine Multimedia & Entertainment performance. It fashions sleek looks and a body similar to the MSI GS60, if not the same.

To sum up, the workstation features an Intel Core i7 4710MQ processor, 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 memory, NVIDIA Quadro K2100M 2GB graphics, 256GB solid state drive (2x 128GB) + 1TB 7200RPM hard drive, 15.6in WQHD+ IPS 2880 x 1620 display, Killer Gigabit LAN, WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, Thunderbolt, Mini DisplayPort, HDMI, 6 cell battery, backlit SteelSeries keyboard, Windows 7 Professional and more. All backed by a 3 year MSI warranty.

Users can enjoy improved rendering speeds, real-time editing quality, high speed data transferring rates, and enhanced read & write speed. This travel-friendly product enables designers to work efficiently and effectively with an up-to-date CPU and 2,048 MB of video memory still based on the Kepler generation, providing 576 shader units. The battery is a 6 cell model with 4,840 mAh.

MSI offers two powerful selections, with the included bonus of a 3k WQHD IPS edition - 2880 x 1620 (available on the second model). As for the standard display, the 2OJ is equipped with Full HD Anti-Reflective 1920 x 1080.

Compared to MSI's older offerings (GT Series), the design isn't just thinner and the keyboard isn't just prettier - it's much more portable and comfortable to use as well, integrating a backlit SteelSeries keyboard with a fully programmable LED functionality and a more sophisticated black matte case. Below lists the comparison between older MSI Workstation models and the newly released WS60. Clearly, MSI is trying to enhance the device's portability. It also looks like MSI has worked on its cooling system as well (Image No.2). Both models include a user friendly interface, also known as the MSI Shortcut Manager, a cloud-based profile with one key commands and unique customization abilities (Image No.3).

    Image No. 1 (link)

Aside USB 3.0, a card reader, HDMI, and LAN, an Ultra HD Output (4k) is a definite plus, with up-to-date Thunderbolt™ 2 technology.

SuperRAID storage allows quicker boot times and performance; over 1000 MB/s of read speed to load programs and massive files.

What makes the Quadro series so much better (hardware wise) than the GTX series? Sorry, I really have no idea what a "workstation" is. There must be something special about workstation GPUs compared to gaming GPUs.

GTX series are designed for gaming, especially the newer ones (DirectX, etc.)

Quadro is all CUDA and OPENGL. Great for Adobe Editing programs, CAD, and design.

I once had a Quadro FX 1600M laptop; the performance hit in gaming compared to 8700M GT was just 1 - 2% mostly.

Quadro's still have gaming capability, it's just not what they're designed for really.

I am keeping an eye out for reviews, at the moment there aren't any. But like Kevin said, refer to the other workstations with the K2100m to see what the WS60 might perform like.

The cooling is designed for the GTX860/870M so there will be no thermal issues with the quadro either.

That's great news! I was going to go with the Ghost, but the heat, noise, and ridiculous logo on the back really threw me off. For a few hundred more than the laptop I just bought and with specs (GPU) that I need, I won't have to compromise anymore. Now to figure out a way to return my laptop without paying a restocking fee.

Any idea when this laptop will be out in Canada?

    MSI USA WS60
    WS60 2OJ 3K-004US - $2599.99
    WS60 2OJ-006US - $2999.99

Engadget lists different prices for some reason:
The base model with a 1080p display and a 2.5GHz Core i7 processor will cost you $2,300, while opting for a "3K" (2,880 x 1,620) screen and an extra SSD ups the price to $2,600.

If you notice in the specs, the $3000 model has two mSATA SSD in RAID 0 format, while the $2600 3K model has only one mSATA SSD. Which is odd to have and extra 128GB mSATA cost $400 more without 3K. Must be a typo somewhere. We should know more after this weekend with the models being displayed at Siggraph 2014.

Which one is the 2600 3k model? both of the links posted are a 3000dlrs model with 2 SDD raid 0 and 3K display, whereas the 2600 model only has 1 ssd and 1080p display.

    For other Canadians out there:

I emailed MemoryExpress to see when they will be getting this laptop and they will be able to get them at the end of August, via special order only as there is not much demand for workstation laptops

I also got prices and models from them:

Microcad.ca sells them for the same price and they are available for preorder. I'm guessing the same end-August timing.

I'm not sure about other vendors up here though.

Your website says that both models are in stock and ready to ship/build. Can you confirm this?

I would order from you guys, but the extra duty (and shipping) cost is a dealbreaker; even with the back to school sales that you have going on right now.

I second this. It has better back to school deals than XoticPC on the non-3k model, however shipping cost is another factor.

Are there other retailers out there besides XoticPC and GenTechPC that offer back to school deals?

Up here in Canada I am seeing the WS60 2OJ-005US and 2OJ-007US models. It looks as though the 005 model is the 3K version and the 007 model is the FHD.

Does anyone know the difference between these models and the 2OJ 3K-004US / 2OJ-006US models found in the United States? Is it just the nomenclature MSI uses for CAN/US models?

Does anyone know if the WS60 will be available in the UK any time soon? If not, would it be possible to ship to the UK?

Assuming the only issue with that would be the warranty and the PSU

Many resellers will ship to the UK and you do get a 1 year international warranty. The PSU as for all modern notebooks is switching so it's just a different wall plug cord you need.

Remember you will need to pay import tax (20%) but not duty.

Are the 3K panels worth it? Scaling issues with Win 7 Pro? The cheaper 1080P panel, is it great to look at or is it grainy and not so colorful? Compared to the retina Macbook Pro's?

It depends on your requirement, because a normal screen usually cannot have more Windows open due to limited resolution (or space).
Therefore, the 3K can be useful but you need to make sure that you have a use for it otherwise the extra premium won't be worthy.

Does it have better cooling system then GS60 ? Or is it same ? Because at reference image it looks like that CPU can be cooled with both fans, same goes for GPU. I mean if they are linked.

It's just if it was a reseller they won't just ship you the box, they would test the machine first before shipping it to ensure it was working.

Yes I contacted them Monday, after three calls, they admitted they had none in stock. Amazon says months till they expect some. Nobody I've found actually have one in stock to ship to me. "Strange reason" ? I just want a laptop quickly, if in stock it should be shipped out same day, or next day, in my opinion. Amazon, Newegg, many others can do it!

I told them, before I ordered it, I wanted no cusomizaton, just send me the laptop. Factory already tested it, right? Why does a reseller need to test? Amazon, or Newegg does not do that!

Yes, it's strange to no longer want a laptop because it is not yet available. As you said, it's a "want" so why not wait...

Every retailer isn't Amazon or Newegg so expecting the same speed of shipment is just not realistic...

I guess that's why lot's of people prefer to order from Amazon or Newegg. Fast delivery = Happy Customer! :)

So your if your issue is with the retailer, why are you no longer interested in the WS60?

My issue is - none available, and I need a laptop now, been putting off purchase for over a year, tired of waiting. I've reached the end of my patience. Long story, I've said enough. Am I on trial here or something. Out of common courtesy, I told everyone I cancelled the order. Done. Bye. :)
