Still a little pricey... I wish this had a Thunderbolt port for charging, that would have been awesome.

It doesn't run Windows 10. It has Windows 10 S (can only run windows store apps), so yea, its a $1000 netbook meant to compete with Chromebooks 1/2 the price

You realize you can upgrade to windows 10 pro for free until Dec 2017... They put 10s on it as more of a showcase, I wouldn't be surprised if you can actually opt to put pro on it from first boot up.

The TDLR report I read didn't mention this! thanks :)

Still probably just an Ultrabook (glorified netbook) unless they put Iris or better graphics processor

Store page is up. Pre-order for 08/2017 o_O . Crazy long wait to be without $1000-$2200

    https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Surface-Laptop/productID.5102691100

    Top model is i7 with iris pro 640. Unfortunately it is 15W TDP dual core;

would be far more interesting at the 28W TDP with iris 650 or better yet, the debut of the mythic ULV quad cores that where supposed to show up quarter 1

Port selection is poor to say the least
    One full-size USB 3.0
    Mini DisplayPort
    Headset jack
    Surface Connect

No thunderbolt USB C, Really!? couldn't squeeze one in?

Windows 10 Pro is a free upgrade that any owner can (and should) do. With that upgrade installed, it's a very stylish and distinctive MacBook competitor. I like it.

Yes, it's an Ultrabook, not a mobile workstation. There's a massive market for ultraportables for people outside of STEM. This is for those people.

There is Iris graphics 640. better than the latest MacBook "pro". it has windows hello, full touchscreen with surface pen support, a better processor, and a better screen than the MacBook as well....for hundreds less. The push to USB-C is not happening as fast as the industry would first suggest...hence the reason the C port was left off. Everyone is not out buying new printers, drives etc just because it has a usb C port. Smart move. why bother with nonsense like that. I think this notebook is a killer device. My only issue with it would be you cannot buy the color options in any configuration....that's a mis step. but this thing is SWEET! I wish they made it flip like my dell. I know they have the surface book, but I don't like that hinge.

It looks very nice and portable. Regarding ports, components etc as it was mentioned during presentation could they put more?
Yes but then battery life will be what, max 7h?
If this setup that is in place now keep battery for around 11-12 hours then this is awesome.
People ask same questions over and over again when something new is presented, who will buy it, who need it etc? Well maybe not you but there are potential buyers don't worry about that. Remember when Apple announced first iPhone and iPod there was questions all over net about who need this, and it was mostly targeted iPod, that was in 2007, and this devices are getting new and updated versions every now and then...
I am more interested in Surface Pro 5 or Surface Book 2. Looking at over all offer from Microsoft in Surface segment (Pro, Book, Studio and Laptop) only question now is when Surface Phone is coming, and then they will have similar eco system to Apple, step after that will be to copy/past Apple way of sales and distribution!

Well thats the thing. It is essentially exactly the same as the Surface pro 4 (or what would have been the new 5) with a permanent keyboard and 1" more screen space. People are going to have to choose between touch laptop and (by the time this thing starts shipping) a tablet that can also be a laptop with the exact same specs.

At this price point I think the Vaio Z flip is a better choice (now that it has gone down in price) with 28W i7 CPU+ Iris 650 GPU, SD card slot, and 2 USB 3.0 ports, and flip tablet screen. 8-9 hrs of battery should be enough; if you absolutely need more battery (cant imagine why) get the Surface Book (17 hrs) with its 2 in 1 functionality and dedicated Nvidia GPU

I wish they made the surface book with a normal 2 in 1 hinge system like my dell...I would be all over it! and I have ran out of battery with 9 hrs of battery life while we travel. The other thing is the keyboards on the surface/surface pro's are terrible too...where as the new surface notebook has what looks to be a great keyboard. Another reason I wish it were a flip style.

I pre-ordered one yesterday. Middle of the road config (i5/8GB/256SSD) which is fine for my needs.

What color did you get....the middle of the road one is the color option setup. Nice score. I am hoping they re do the surface book with the laptop styling.

Well we will see something soon! Another Surface event May 23rd :). Most likely Surface Pro, but could be both pro and book

    https://techcrunch.com/2017/05/05/microsoft-teases-new-surface-event-in-shanghai-on-may-23rd/

Makes it even harder to Pre-Order the Surface Laptop Though. I'd advise most people to wait to see what else they put out. (Would never recommend pre-ordering something 4 months in advance)

But I think MSoft is cool about cancelling pre-orders :). I did so when ordering Surface Book.

Yeah. On the windowscentral site, they are all yammering on about a new mobile phone device....NOT HAPPENING. But I think it will be some new surface book/pro options...or a lesser studio for us mere mortals ha ha...I NEED one of those!

Why do you think it will not happens? Remember S. Ballmer era? Forcing metro, windows rt, not entering ios platform with office, onedrive etc... I think that Microsoft learned lesson, if you want to be competitive on the market, you need to be open to explore and to listen to your customers, users, and as well check what competition is working on. Well we all know what was revenue of just providing office suite on ios. On the other side Apple pushed some borders with their devices and software doing things that other did not, and yes after that other did as well, some of them just adapt what was offered by Apple some of them tweaked and improved, some of them put in place some very interested solutions never seen before (Apple is now I am sad to say it, looking more and more to me like Microsoft in era of Ballmer)... and what did Microsoft learned, they put in place same model, we make good os lets drive it on premium hdw and offer it to users as bundle, first it was surface pro (competitor to mb air/ mb/ mb pro/ ipad pro in a way), we have version 4 in place waiting for number 5, after that we have surface book (competitor to mb pro), who get version 1.5 with performance base, we have surface studio (competitor to imac), we have surface laptop (competitor to mb air/ mb/ mb pro in a way) with new windows 10s, and here we come to a fun part, right? There are only 2 more things that was not fully covered if we still look offer of apple eco system, ipad and iphone... ipad can be attacked with some surface pad device with only windows 10s as a option, on the other hand iphone can be attacked as well, as before Microsoft went down the road like Samsung and others who produce android mobile phones, to many devices, to hard to maintain, not a core company business, and yes it is almost all dead... but now this situation opens great opportunity to present 1 device, surface phone, segmentation can be storage wise like apple and thats it! ... now when I think there are two other devices to cover but that can be long run: ipod and apple tv.

So what do you think about that scenario?

They have tanked their mobile market to 0% market share...hell webOS has a bigger market share. I used to own 2 nokia 1020s. My wife and I loved them, saw windows 8 moving forward with new apps etc entering the platform, here was the best mapping I have seen on ANY device, not just phone, the camera was and still is remarkable, and the phone was just AWESOME. Then, this numnuts Nadella took the helm and **** tanked everything, wrote off the entire mobile division, fired everyone, and let any traction windows 10 mobile had....which was not a lot (but that's for another post...but lets just say they made a lot of bold promises and then back pedaled there too), and let it just die. They will have a rough time trying to even grab a 1% share if they even tried to get back in now. So, new windows mobile phone....NOT happening.

Yes, I know. Someone commented about my comment on no mobile devices being released on the 25th....so I responded. nothing more. Again, I think there are 2 new Surface tablet 2 in 1s coming a large and small screen option. I doubt the book will get an update, because they only released the performance base not long ago, but I wish they would do away with that ugly hinge.

The needed something to be the length of the notebook. Can't see why they never went with one large pin barrel (like gen 1 hp omen)

HP has had a couple of gorgeous designs recently. The Spectre 13 is also a styling standout. The Surface Book and Surface Laptop...they're not blend but they don't have quite the same spark in my opinion.

Obviously it's subjective, but HP and style don't ever go together in the same sentence. The Spectre models for example are about as horrific as it gets.

Well that hinge is dead sexy....add that to the surface book....WOW! you automatically knock off a crap load of unneeded thickness to the surface book because of that dumb hinge.

I was at best buy yesterday and spent ALOT of time with the surface book, laptop and new MacBook touchbar edition. How anyone thinks apple computers or software is better than windows is BEYOND me. It's terrible, the touchbar is crap, and the Microsoft branded computers are amazing hardware. all for hundreds less. The book is great, I still hate the hinge but the rest of the device is amazing. The new laptop is killer as well. I only wish they made it a full 2 in 1.

What is funny is that Panos gave the surface line and internal 25% failure rate. Meaning they (Microsoft) were expecting a 25% failure rate of the surface devices. I guess it's for warranty planning etc. The real number is actually much much lower than 25%. But that shows MS did not have "faith" in their product if they gave 1/4 of their devices a return rate.
