The merge of Compiz Extras and Beryl is now called Compiz Fusion. You will find it included in recent major distributions (Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint, Mandriva, etc.)

I can't help you with virtualization because I haven't tried it.

Other than that, in a regular installation, it would run smoothly with your hardware. (What is your graphics card?)

Ubuntu and Mint are both easy distributions but Mint is even easier for a beginner. On both, it's really easy to enable the visual effects.

No. VMWare doesn't supports the kind of graphics you need for Compiz in Guest OS VMs. (And probably never will IMO)

I've tried it via dual boot and also VMware, and the VM will lag considerably.

    So -- no it won't. :/

Not in a long time....I thought that was built into most linux distros now, no? If not, I guess I need to install it.

Wine sucks. I just Load Windows to VMware and work with certain windows apps from it.

Beryl will not run in a virtual environment as virtual machines do not yet support 3D acceleration. The same thing goes for games.
