I recently installed ubuntu on a friends machine because he wanted to use it... now he wants it off his comptuer. ive googled around a bit and what ive come up with wont work...

basically what ive come up with is:
    1) use vista's partition manager tool thing to delete the partitions that i installed ubuntu on
    2) boot with the vista recovery cd in the cd drive and type in fixmbr (or something simmilar)

but, the problem is that he bought his laptop with vista preinstalled and he doesnt ahve a recovery cd. How can i do this without that recovery cd?

You can't get rid of GRUB without a recovery disc. The only alternative (that I can suggest) would be to burn an illegitimate copy of Vista and use it for recovery purposes only; even so such an activity cannot be discussed on NBR forums. You could also just borrow a Vista disc from someone.

thanks for the help, but what i did (just incase anyone else wants to know) was boot from the recovery partition (i think, im not really sure because i wasnt able to boot from it again, so somehow one time i got lucky or something i really dont know...), then it "fixed" the master boot record. It really didnt fix it, i got an error while i tried to start the computer that the boot manager was missing or something. I then downloaded GAG boot loader so i could boot into vista, then it asked me to repair the boot record. This time it did it right and the computer was fixed.

I dont recommend this method however, just thought the last part (using the GAG boot loader) might interest some people if they are getting that same error that i was with the missing boot loader.
