I have 2 IBM laptops that whenever I do shut down on kubuntu for one, and ubuntu on the other it does the normal stuff, and says "Will now halt" at the end, and I hear the HD and everything wind down. But for some reason the screen stays on and has the teminal type interface that says all the process stuff it does for shutdown and I have to hold the power button to turn it off. Sometimes, it shuts down properly, but for the most part I have to do the power button thing. Is there any way to solve this? Thanks.

It may be an ACPI issue with the laptop that stays on. You might need to do a BIOS update to it. What models are they? A little more information about the hardware and setup would go a long way to solving the problem, such as which one is having the shutdown problems, the version of Ubuntu, etc.

    Sorry

    1) ThinkPad A21p-Runs Ubuntu 6.06 LTS
256MB RAM, 40GB HD, Pentium 3 800 MHz. It's dual booted with XP Pro.

    2) ThinkPad A22m-Runs Kubuntu 6.06.1 LTS
    Same stats, no dual boot.

Both are having the shutdown problems.

Ahhh. When you reboot, select the Linux you want to boot, and then edit the line (it should be just hitting e on the line) and add the option "pci=noacpi" on it. Then boot. that won't change anything permanently, it'll just change it for that boot-up. If it shuts down normally, edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst file and add that line on for good.

You may also try Ubuntu 6.10, as it has a bit better hardware compatibility. Is there a reason you're sticking with 6.06LTS?

Upgrading to Edgy fixed the problem for me on my 6400, it's a Dapper bug.

the pci=noacpi thing didnt work. It kept saying it wasnt a a real command. I'll download and install 6.10.

Just try adding noacpi to the GRUB command. That may work.
