    Hello, I'm running Ubuntu Server on a Dell XPS laptop, does anyone know how to turn off the display's backlight on it? thanks!

    just stating the obvious if you might have missed it, does the fn+f8 keys not work then? they used to work on my ibm t23 perfectly

    no it doesn't work. currently I just boot it up, switch to external display at POST, then unplug the display cable after it's fully booted, because for some reason I cannot switch to external display after it's booted.
    If anyone has a more elegant way to this, please share.
