I've got a Canon LiDE 6-something scanner. It works nicely enough under Windows, but Ubuntu 8.10 doesn't recognize it at all.

So I'm wondering, what's the best-supported (and cheap!) scanner that works well under Linux?

    update: it's a CanoScan LiDE 600F

That's because there is NO support. If you want to use it in Ubuntu (why would you want to do that? Why would you want to use Ubuntu, anyway?!?), you could set up a Virtual Machine. So, for e.g., use VirtualBox and install Windows there.

That way, you remain in Ubuntu (*cough**cough*) but can boot up Windows 'inside' and use your scanner. Otherwise, you need a Windows partition or a dedicated Windows machine when needing your scanner.

The LIDE series up to 60 is supported and after that, Canon decided to give up on Linux support. Some of the PIXMA series of printers still has some support, though. But, for scanners, forget it.

I mostly look at HP, Brother or Samsung for printers and the all-in-ones often have a scanner so they are often supported if one of those brands, especially HP which has the HPLIP driver (and/or hpijs/hplip).

This guy claims to be reverse engineering the SANE backend for the 600F, so if you stick with this scanner and Linux, it may be worthwhile to ping him regarding the project status.

    Good Luck..

You need to go into USB settings and click the "add usb filter" button on the right and add it before you boot up the virtual machine. It will work. You need the Lide 90 drivers installed in the VM also.

Epson V500 works like a champ in Linux btw. 64 bit drivers for it also.

I have a brother MFC and everything works. So my vote goes to Brother MFC if you looking to replace your scanner.
