yesterday i found a sound driver on realteks site, so i thought i would give it a shot but it doesnt seem to work, now i would either like to get back the old one i had (dont know how to do that) or fix this realtek one...

this is what the realtek driver install said, apparently it thinks the install was a success, but it wasnt

Now ALSA is ready to use.
For adjustment of volumes, use your favorite mixer.

Have you looked at the main volume in the mixer?

by mixer you mean the volume thing on the panel right? and when i hit the volume up/down buttons the volume wont change, it is all the way down and i cannot change it anyway i try. When i double click on it i get a little popup that says:

    Code:
No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.
i am trying to install an alsa driver i found, but in the install it says:

    Code:
    7) Edit your kernel module config (either /etc/modprobe.conf or
/etc/modules.conf, depending on the kernel version). If you are not
sure, what to do, you may try the alsaconf script available in
       the alsa-utils package.

    8) Run 'modprobe snd-xxxx' where xxxx is the name of your card.
Note: All ALSA ISA drivers support ISA PnP natively, so you don't need
isapnptools any more. Don't use both together. It will
conflict. For disabling the ALSA ISA PnP support, specify
             --with-isapnp=no configure switch.
any idea what i should do for these?

    Reading state information... Done

    Recommended updates

    Check for updates: [Daily]

those three things have checkmarks beside them under the updates tab, and under the Ubuntu Software tab i have all the main, universe, restricted, and multiverse all checked off

    still the same error..

but, i think i have another alsa driver almost installed, i just got to these steps and i dont know what to do now...

             --with-isapnp=no configure switch.
for step 7 i cannot locate the alsaconf script or /etc/modprobe.conf or /etc/modules.conf and i dont know how to find hte name of my sound card either (for step 8)
