Hi guys,
just got my hands on HP laptop from my employer, installed CentOS and all working, (almost all 'outta box'), so I can recommend it for linux, if someone else is interested ...
Had only small issue with video (a bit googling) and wifi (downloading firmware).
1. download intel 5300 wifi firmware:
http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/?n=downloads&f=ucodes_5000
- just download needed 5300 firmware file, save, untar and the file "*.ucode" in the:
/lib/firmware (in my case it was "iwlwifi-5000-1.ucode")
- CentOS specific:
- disabled 'network service':
chkconfig network off
and enabled NetworkManager:
chkconfig --level 345 NetworkManager on
service NetworkManager start
- done
2. video (small) problem:
it has intel gma 4500mhd integrated vga - problem was that by default the 'vesa' driver was used, that's capable of only 1024x768 and my screen has native 1280x800 ...
After a bit of googling, I found I need to install:
xorg-x11-drv-i810.x86_64 package, that includes the needed xorg driver - as you can see:
[root@czchown0013139 /]# rpm -ql xorg-x11-drv-i810.x86_64
/usr/lib64
/usr/lib64/libI810XvMC.so.1
/usr/lib64/libI810XvMC.so.1.0.0
/usr/lib64/xorg/modules
/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers
/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/ch7017.so
/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/ch7xxx.so
/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/i810_drv.so
/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so
/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/ivch.so
/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/sil164.so
/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/tfp410.so
/usr/share/hwdata/videoaliases/i810.xinf
/usr/share/man/man4/i810.4.gz
/usr/share/man/man4/intel.4.gz
In case you have another distro and have intel integrated graphic (and it's not working out of box), look for distro related package! E.g. in Fedora its "xorg-x11-drv-intel".
Next, I edited xorg.conf and changed 'vesa' (which was default installed) for 'intel' here:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "intel"
3. because I wanted to see my HW specs (and I cant get into Bios because it's corporate laptop with bios pwd protection) I installed rpmforge repo - install directions here:
http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories/RPMForge
4. installed from rpmforge repo:
lshw and lshw-gui :
yum install lshw.x86_64 lshw-gui.x86_64
It's very nice utility which enables you easily gather HW info from your lappy (maybe you got it in your distro too)
That's all, install done and here you can see the HW specification of HP EliteBook 6930p:
