Thankfully Linux is not Windows. I have Frostwire working normally on Ubuntu Feisty.

Well, there's no mainstream music, but I get all my music through BitTorrent from Jamendo. ( http://www.jamendo.com/en ) All legal and licensed Creative Commons.

And for actually sorting it and putting it on your iPod, you may want to look into amaroK, which is a KDE application but may be worth looking at anyway.

I use amarok on Gnome and haven't looked at any other player since.

Frostwire is the Limewire of Linux.

Technically, Frostwire is just a compile of the Limewire source with the logos and colors changed and the ads (pushing Pro) removed. It runs on Windows too.
