Has anyone got this up and running, I had v1.0 in VMWARE and it was quite easy to use, however the new version 2.9 looks interesting (however I dont like how it is "aimed at Myspacers").

Also does anyone know exactly what modifications they have made to Ubuntu (aside from using software like AWN and Compiz)

gOS is extremely underpowered, I'd go with linux Mint......
Not to say I don't like it, I'll try it again later. ;)

gOS is a google-filled take on Ubuntu with the enlightenment desktop. Ubuntu supports compiz so there's no difference there.

If you like Ubuntu but want a friendlier interface, try Mint.

If you like the enlightenment desktop, give Dream Linux 3.1 a try.

I'd rather just theme my Arch XFCE install to look like OSX.
