First off i would like to thank all those who've cleared up the 96J/linux incompatibility issues i was facing earlier. I've successfully installed kubuntu edgy on my S96J. I've also been able to use adept to get new packages.

Using adept, i've downloaded and installed the fglrx driver and control panel. I even had the dev file installed for good measure. Now, what do i need to do in order to set my resolution upto par? I looked under system settings ->monitor and display -> hardware and it shows vesa under graphics card and driver. Is this correct or should it be fglrx. When i open the control panel it says the FireGL X11 extensions are missing. What does that mean?

Also, when i scrolling a webpage using firefox or konqueror the screen lags. This is typical of a missing graphics driver, the same thing happens in windows if you don't install the graphics driver. Whats going on?

    Thanks,
    SS

    Thanks,

The easiest way to both install the ATi drivers and to get all the codecs is to get Automatix2. Some people may call it cheating, but it is still the easiest way. This will allow you to easily install and configure most things that you could need or want.

Did you read this to install fglrx? Google is your friend:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/B...head-c966b2cb7c82944d6883f27a2896725db3b90a3a

As you're using kubuntu, substitute "kate" for any mentions of "gedit"

As for codecs, you need to Google to install the w32codecs package for kubuntu 6.10. It should pop up pretty quickly. You may need to google for mp3 and kubuntu as well, as I don't think that lame or the libraries needed are installed by default due to patent restrictions in the US. Yay intellectual property!

FYI, AVI and WMV are container formats, and can hold video files in many different codecs. A codec is NOT tied to an extension.

    Automatix is awesome! Thanks!

There is one problem though. I don't see an option for ATI or fglrx on there. Are there only a set number of available packages or is there a way to make it update?

PB thanks for the redirect on codecs vs formats. Ill look into the fglrx setup process tonight.

    Thanks,
    SS
