Works great!! Here are the details.

Using arch linux on a thinkpad T61p. My external drive is actually a Western Digital Caviar GP 1TB 5400 to 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive in an external enclosure. Using hdparm, (3 second transfers, tested 10 times per) I found:

    esata: 71 KB/s
    usb: 28 KB/s

This can be compared to my internal laptop drive, a HITACHI Travelstar 7K200 200GB 7200 RPM SATA 1.5Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive:

    sata: 57 KB/s
