    Hi everyone,

I have finally taken the plunge and installed ubuntu as the default OS on my XPS 15 last week. So far, everything has been good. I am using WINE to get some essential software to run. I wondered if it is possible to do a seamless integration of Win7 with ubuntu. What I want to do is something like Vmware's unity mode.

The applications will run on a virtualized windows OS, but I see only the application, without the OS elements like taskbar, desktop etc.

I did a lot of searching and found that this is possible with xp, using the rdp protocol via Virtualbox. But it doesn't seem to work in windows 7

Any suggestions on how to get this working will be highly appreciated

The attached pic shows windows applications running seamlessly on a Mac. I want to do exactly the same thing, but with Ubuntu.

Edit: I just reread your post. Actually IMO WINE is good enough, there is much less overhead than VM, I have seen people installing Big Windows 7 Applications on VM and it takes so long you can hear snickers...

WINE is very good. But for some of the more stubborn apps, running them on a virtual machine is the only choice! :(

There are lot of things that just can't be done under linux ... dual boot is the only working option.

I must be doing something wrong, I've never had much luck getting stuff working under wine.

That's vmware unity for mac, a similar product is parallels desktop which has linux host support.

You can also use 'Seamless Mode' in VirtualBox, it's not exactly the same but it integrates your VM taskbar and windows into your linux environment.
