I am trying Mint and Ubuntu now, running them by flash drive. So far I have more things working with Mint. I have also run Fedora 10 from a live cd, but it was too slow using it that way as was Mint. Ubuntu is fair to use by cd.

I use Debian on my desktop (Squeeze amd64) and HTPC (Lenny x86) and OpenSUSE 11.1 x86 on my laptop- yes, my signature says Ubuntu 8.10 amd64, but I installed OpenSUSE since suspend-to-RAM works with OpenSUSE but not Ubuntu 8.10.

I started out with Fedora, openSuSE, and Ubuntu, all great distros which gave me a good beginner's introduction to linux. Later, though, after a stint with Slackware, I ran across Arch and have not turned back since.

I have used Ubuntu, Debian, SUSE, Arch, SLAX and Gentoo. Currently using Gentoo on all my machines. Need to get used to how slow everything else is versus my desktop :(

Right now in Sig....I'm a MEPIS 8 fan, but my Precision is finicky with anything but a Ubuntu derivative, even Suse, so I'm stuck with Mint Xfce, which is miles ahead of Xubuntu as Mint has finally taken on a life of it's own :)...but, I'd choose it anyway ! Basically I stay in the 'debian' arena.

Others I revisit and like are Mandriva and Zenwalk.

I like Mandriva and OpenSuSE a lot but end up going to Ubuntu sometimes because of finicky mobile broadband(and my own screw ups).

I've been using SuSE/openSUSE since 2001. Before then Red Hat.

I've played with various distributions live CDs, and currently have Fedora 10 on a sandbox PC, ... but I prefer openSUSE.

PCLinuxOS 2009.1 was released today after a long long wait, and is compatible with this Precision Laptop....so I'm giving that a whirl now as I've never been able to run it before because of hardware, wireless....etc. It's all current now it seems, finally :D

CentOS 5.2 on my laptop (i manage RHEL servers, so this help me with my job). I was previously on Debian potato and sarge, but then moved to rpm distro to perfect rpm usage 'even if asleep' :). CentOS (RHEL) is nice, conservative system with minimum bugs, downside is, it doesn't use newest kernels, so for laptop usage - wifi, camera, 3g pcmcia card etc you need to compile modules for kernel.

My first was RedHat 6 (in ~2000), next was SuSE 10.0, lasted untill openSUSE 11 then I moved to Debian (Etch while it was in "Testing"), now I run Lenny on my desktop as a file/web server.

I also used Gentoo, Arch, (K)Ubuntu, Mepis, Mandrake (Mandriva).
For me Debian is the winner.

Arch for ~4-5 months now - no going back.
Ubuntu x64 for under ~1 month (due to lack of 64-bit Mint w/ new laptop.)
Linux Mint 4/5 for ~4-5 months previous to that w/ Debian installed for around a month inbetween.

Haha. I feel you, man. I'm almost at the point of installing cygwin in Vista.
