    Hello there,

    I want to install Linux OS on my Sony Vaio VGC-LS1 machine.

    I have the following concerns:

    1. Which version type should I install.......Red Hat, Fedora, Ubuntu...?

    2. Which is more user friendly?

    3. Regarding drivers would I need specific to Linux???

    4. As a med doc would I be able to run my med softwares on Linux OSs??

    Hoping to hear your views,

    Regards!

    well, I'm assuming your medical software is windows-specific, so you would probably need to run them through WINE.

    you should probably go through your hardware and see what's listed on this website: http://www.linux-drivers.org/

    most drivers are installed automatically with the operating system itself, although things like full-featured, proprietary graphics drivers or stuff for broadcom wireless cards will take post-install configuration.

    Wine is a way to let many Windows programs run under Windows. It really depends on what the program is, what kinds of stupid tricks it tries to do, etc. What is your medical software? Mostly just forms to fill out, etc.?

    Download ubuntu from http://www.ubuntu.com

    Google is your friend... if you had searched for Ubuntu, that is the first link that comes up. You will have to get used to using Google and other information for help with Linux.

    Why are you wanting to install Linux? Be prepared to un-learn a lot of things you take for granted in Windows, because Linux does not behave the same way. I would NOT recommend switching over completely, especially right off the bat.

    Which version should I download from the following:

    Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft)Select an imageUbuntu is distributed on three types of images described below.

    Desktop CDThe desktop CD allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later. This type of CD is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 192MB of RAM to install from this CD.

    There are three images available, each for a different type of computer:

    PC (Intel x86) desktop CD
    For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows. Choose this if you are at all unsure.
    Mac (PowerPC) and IBM-PPC (POWER5) desktop CD
    For Apple Macintosh G3, G4, and G5 computers, including iBooks and PowerBooks as well as IBM OpenPower machines.
    64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop CD
    For computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon). It is not necessary for all (even most) processors made by AMD -- only their 64 bit chips.
    Server install CDThe server install CD allows you to install Ubuntu permanently on a computer for use as a server. It will not install a graphical user interface.

    There are four images available, each for a different type of computer:

    PC (Intel x86) server install CD
    For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows. Choose this if you are at all unsure.
    Mac (PowerPC) and IBM-PPC (POWER5) server install CD
    For Apple Macintosh G3, G4, and G5 computers, including iBooks and PowerBooks as well as IBM OpenPower machines.
    64-bit PC (AMD64) server install CD
    For computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon). It is not necessary for all (even most) processors made by AMD -- only their 64 bit chips.
    SPARC server install CD
    For Sun UltraSPARC computers, including those based on the multicore UltraSPARC T1 ("Niagara") processors.
    Alternate install CDThe alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Ubuntu. It provides for the following situations:

    creating pre-configured OEM systems;
    setting up automated deployments;
    upgrading from older installations without network access;
    LVM and/or RAID partitioning;
    installing GRUB to a location other than the Master Boot Record;
    installs on systems with less than about 192MB of RAM.
    There are three images available, each for a different type of computer:

    PC (Intel x86) alternate install CD
    For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows. Choose this if you are at all unsure.
    Mac (PowerPC) and IBM-PPC (POWER5) alternate install CD
    For Apple Macintosh G3, G4, and G5 computers, including iBooks and PowerBooks as well as IBM OpenPower machines.
    64-bit PC (AMD64) alternate install CD
    For computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon). It is not necessary for all (even most) processors made by AMD -- only their 64 bit chips.
    A full list of available files, including BitTorrent files, can be found below.

    You'll want the PC intel (x86) or (i386) DESKTOP version.

    Yes, use the Intel x86 version. And please use the Bittorrent link if you can; you'll need to have a torrent client installed (you can get Bittorrent here). It will usually be faster and will help take the load off the Ubuntu servers, which is a nice thing to do. :)

    you can also use CrossOver software instead of WINE. so far it looks alot better i think.
