I would like to run ubuntu studio on a virtual system because i don't want to mess with partitions and risk me messing up my whole computer. I looked it up on the internet and all the different vitualisation things are doing my head in and I can't work out which is best, I've never run a virtual machine before.
I don't know whether this makes a difference to what to use but here are my specs.
windows vista home premium 64bit
intel p8600
ati hd3670
4 gig of RAM
I normally consider myself to be a bit of a computer nerd but I've never meddled with virtual systems before so I'm a compleetly clueless n00b

The above post is teh best way to do it. VirtualBox is free and I think its awesome. Why are you installing ubuntu studio... just install ubuntu. The only real difference you'll notice on the virtual machine is the fact that it doesn't come preloaded with extra software. Most of the software you probably won't use.

another alternative is to do a persistant install on a flash drive. It runs and saves all settings to the flash drive, but of course read/write speed is slower. It might not be better than a virtual machine, but I'm just giving you some ideas.

The reason I'm using ubuntu studio is because I like the feel of it more and it just seems easier to me, I've tried it out on my friends computer and thoought it was good

Setting up the partitions for a dual boot is kind of tough to get at first, but after you do it once, then it is the easiest thing in the world.
