    Hi there,

I was installing Ubuntu with an external HD plugged, during the step where it asks what partition you want to install to, without thinking I unplugged my external HD. After I Ubuntu was installed I noticed it was not showing up. I then took the external HD to a windows xp computer and it still does not show up, although it shows up in device manger. It also shows up on the safely remove usb screen. I accidentally left it in while reinstalling windows xp on my laptop and without thinking I unplugged it. Did I just loose all of my data? Is the HD even usable anymore?

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, switching usb ports, computers, and cables.

Any further help would be great. I have about 4 years worth of data on this HD and I really HOPE I didn't don any permanent damage.

Did you ever at any point attempt to install either ubuntu or windows XP to the hard drive (before unplugging it)? If not, and you're sure the hard drive was not in use when you unplugged it from your PC in both instances, then it should still be OK.

Try plugging the hard drive into another computer. If it still isn't detected, then yeah, you might have a problem.

    Hi Benx,

Thanks for your reply. I am quite sure I did not try to install ubuntu on the external HD. But I cannot be certain that it was not in use, because I was at the screen where it asked me which HD/partition I wanted to install ubuntu on and the external HD was on the of options.

I've tried testing it on another HD still no success. If you or anyone else can think of a potential solution, I'd be very grateful. :)
