Recently got my first Thinkpad and have set up a dual boot (XP Pro and Gutsy). As a Linux newbie, I have a couple of questions:
1. The palmrest (near the fingerprint scanner) runs quite hot with Gutsy, but fairly cool with XP Pro. Is it the scanner or the networking (Ethernet and Wifi)? If networking, how do I turn it off (I do a lot of standalone, off-line work)?
2. If heating is caused by the fingerprint scanner, is there a way to install the correct driver (Thinkfinger?) and turn it off? I have been unable to install Thinkfinger so far; is there an easy to follow install procedure for us newbies?

Hey...
1. The HDD is located under your right-hsnd pslm rest so thats probably whats causing the heat. HDD activity maybe higher in Gutsy than XP Pro. Also Vista seems to have more HDD activity than XP.
2. The Fingerprint Reader shouldn't generate any heat. At least it shouldn't be enough to make any difference or make it uncomfortable. -
Is it ati grahpic card ?
cound be the gpu not clock down

The hard drive sits more under the keyboard than the palm rest.

Which WiFi card do you have? If you have the ThinkPad card which is an Athernos card, it runs warmer than the Intel card. It sits under the right palm rest which would explain the extra heat. The X61s I had over the summer ran kind of warm in that area. I doubt the fingerprint reader is causing much heat. -

Yes, the hard drive is on the right-hand side, basically under the Enter key through the Backspace key. Not terribly close to the right palm rest.
I have the Intel AGN wireless card and x3100 graphics.
Since the hardware runs cool under XP Pro, I'm thinking that Gutsy is doing something different with power. Just trying to figure out what!
Ubuntu Gutsy, Thinkpad X61 and Fingerprint Scanner
