The next release of ubuntu late this october is said to have 'a complete desktop redesign.' What is meant by this? Will the generic two taskbars be replaced by something like the windows taskbar? will the linux gui function differently? I'm excited about the forthcoming release, does anyone have any clue on what the new desktop will look like?
    thanks :)

No idea, although I'm interested myself...
I used ubuntu as my main OS for a while but when my new lappy comes I'll stick with Vista on it...

No one has a clue, but they're planning up a brainstorm. Please, don't mention anything about the windows task bar though, or i will personally hurt you. It'll probably be awesome if they implement the ideas i saw floating around in brainstorm. Like getting the DeviantArt community to do the new desktop and stuff, it should be awesome. If they do a good enough job they can draw me away from LinuxMint. :D

Well 8.04 was supposed to have a completely different theme, but this was postponed to 8.10 as 8.04 is a LTS version and for customers this is the best choice.

It will be the end of the human theme, and hello to new colours, new icons, new face! I can't wait!!!

The logo will always be the same.

I think we can be seeing the new interface in early September or late August.

Has anyone seen the May-B mockup in the Topaz brainstorm section of gnome-look???? It's freaking awesome!!! I would absolutely love to see some concepts of the concept incorporated in the next release of Ubuntu. Or at least just the translucency effects and the "on-going" idea...

the concept does look pretty nice however i doubt the creator will have any influence in the creation of the next gnome enviroment since he says:
"Note also that I'm not part at all of any Gnome-related team."

Calvin I'm using linuxmint right now but from my desktop you wouldn't guess lol:

Lawl, good job. Oh yeah, LinuxMint 5 came out but it hasn't been officially announced yet. If you want to have the latest and greatest before it's announced you can get it now, but otherwise i think you should wait for clem to announce it.

just ordered a Ubuntu Server Edition CD via shipit which is supposed to be faster than the normal ubuntu.
"Ubuntu Server Edition is an energy efficient, low memory and disk footprint operating system that helps build server functions that respect our environment with no compromise on agility and versatility".
I'll post if I notice any speed differences, be prepared for a 1- 2 month wait tho lol.

WoW it looks great. I was planing to sit the next 1-2 updates out and stay with 8.04 being that it is the long term release and all, and since my lappy is running great with everything I need, but....... I like.... ;)

    1) I really don't need it and cant be bothered to download it.
    2) I'll be getting an ssd soon and don't want to install it until I get it
    3) Saves the time downloading, and then burning the iso ettc...

Ubuntu Server Edition differs from the Ubuntu people normally install (aka Ubuntu Desktop) only insofar as the server edition does not install all the GUI stuff. Otherwise, it's all the same.

Making the taskbars look like the Windows taskbar is possible with the current version. Either use KDE instead (which you should be doing anyway, as GNOME is horrible), or just edit the panel configuration in GNOME. I believe some distros (OpenSUSE and Linux Mint do it I think) have the GNOME panels set up in a Windows-like style by default.

I would hope KDE 4.1 makes it into Kubuntu, it looks really great. I'm not sure how late the dev team adds new features as KDE 4.1 isn't going to be out until July 29th.
