Early this morning I loaded to the Whole HD, Ubuntu 8.04, Hardy Heron.
My unit has the nVidia 8400M GS GPU. ALL the hardware workded except the finger print reader which I never used anyway. Webcam, Wireless the works. Configure Wine and install the 3 must have windows apps and I am a happy camper. So long Microsoft! :)

Good! That's very nice. My Vostro works similarly, although I have to install a wireless and nVidia driver...

I had only one problem on my dv9700t - that was with the NVIDIA driver installer. After I installed the driver through the restricted drivers manager, all the fonts became oversized. To fix this, I had to add the line ' Option "UseEdidDpi" "False" ' under ' Section "Device" '. Everything else worked fine. I think it might be a KDE issue, not an Ubuntu problem, though. It was an issue in Gutsy, and is still an issue in Hardy.

Im like OP, all my stuff works out of the box on a dv2500

even the BT and the Quicklaunch button lights.

Talk about simple and easy. thats how easy an OS should be!

Though my Vista loads faster than ubuntu.. o_O

Exactly what I'm thinking... My hardware all works too, except I have to install the nVidia driver, which is nothing... Except, FF3 on Linux is considerably slower than on Windows. I haven't installed Linux yet after my horrible crash on the boot loader, but I will soon, probably tomorrow.

I find Ubuntu runs faster and loads faster for me on my HP nx6325 that is my view, I feel that Vista is just waste of code and really there is no use for bloated OS like Vista. If you look around the web Vista is being compared to Windows ME.
A OS does not need to be bloated full of crap just simple streamlined that is all you need.

You may want to try out Opera 9.5 beta, it's amazingly fast.

I'm having problems with my graphics card on Ubuntu 8.04 (Geforce 8400M GS in a dv2500t). I've tried using both Envy and the restricted drivers manager to install the drivers, but when I restart, it says Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode.

I was having quite a few problems with Firefox 3 Beta 5, so I just installed Firefox 2. The package is called "firefox-2" IIRC.

How is your power management working with compiz loaded? I've been unsuccessful using suspend and hibernate with compiz running on my dv9000t.

Mine shows up in the Kopete configuration menu. I'm guessing Kopete just activates it when I want to use it, though I've never actually tried video chatting with it.

In which order did you use them?
    Anyway try this:
    Code:
    sudo gedit /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common
    add the following line:
    Code:
    DISABLED_MODULES="nv nvidiafb nvidia_new nvidia_legacy"
Save, reboot, it should now work.

Are you getting power management without Compiz? I'm getting fully functional suspend and hibernate (even the wireless card works when I turn it back on).
