    Hey,

Im looking into getting a netbook and running Ubuntu. I want an Asus Eee and have been looking at the following models....

    1001PX-EU27
    Newegg.com - ASUS Eee PC 1001PX-EU27-WT White Intel Atom N450(1.66GHz) 10.1" WSVGA 1GB Memory 250GB HDD Netbook

    1015PEM-MU17
Newegg.com - ASUS Eee PC 1015PEM-MU17-WT White Intel Atom N550(1.50GHz) Dual Core 10.1" WSVGA 1GB Memory 250GB HDD Netbook

    or possibly...
    1015T-MU17
    Newegg.com - ASUS Eee PC 1015T-MU17-WT White AMD V Series V105(1.20GHz) 10.1" WSVGA 1GB Memory 250GB HDD Netbook

I have heard about some issues accepting 2gb of RAM, which i can get around. However i heard that Ubuntu might not accept the wireless card/ driver.... Has anyone had experience? Thanks.

    Tom

The only wifi card that I know of that causes some issues are the 5XXX series with N in n mode. I have one in my thinkpad and I never use n mode and Im fine.

Well as long as the wifi adapter isnt an Intel 5xxx series with n mode you should be fine.

If you looking in to 12" then might as well look for a bit more expensive ultra-portables.

Got 1005pe dualbooting win7 ultimate and ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition.
By installing extra repositories dribers ... I got the same ubuntu install since v8 (keep updating it all the time) and direct partition mirrored over 3 pc now ... Had it on usb stick in msi wind then on the hdd from there moved it to 1005pe and atm got it on a dell xt ....
Pretty flexible just have to know what to add and from where ... and don't have to be afraid to compile some things from sources.

ps.: went for the 1005pe because 10H+ battery life on the go, and fits in to anything.

I owe a 1201N (dual Core Atom) and i actual changed the WIFI out since the original one did not work corect.
Mine runs Ubuntu very well after i changed teh WIFI card. everything else will work out of the Box.
You can find tutorials on how to make WIFI work online. It sounded like that Ubuntu didnt use the correct Driver for the Atheros card in my 1201N

The 1015PEM works fine, minus a few hotkeys out of the box. Most new Eee PCs will have broadcom wifi, which has a new open driver called brcm80211 - Linux Wireless

It works pretty well but has no suspend/resume support so I had to make a script to load/unload the module since the driver can't handle it itself.

I posted my experiences with it here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/lin...e/532036-asus-1015pem-ubuntu.html#post6994136

In that post there's also a link to an Ubuntu forums thread that might be worth a look.

i think there was a ralink in the rig and i changed it out with a different version of the Ralink.
Here is a link to Oxford tech for wifi needs...

edit: sorry i got an Atheros now not a ralink. A ralink used to be in there.

Yeah a lot of Eees have come with atheros, ralink or realtek wireless. Atheros is usually for the higher priced models, but as far as I know the newer ones have broadcom. All of these are now pretty well supported so wireless shouldn't be much of an issue, besides maybe crap antennas/weak reception in some models.

I used to owe several EEEPC`s and all of them were different as you said wireless wise. from the 701 over to 901 over 1015 now to 1201 I love them Asus EEEPC I wanted to upgrade my 1201 to an 1215N but finally decided it runs good and no need for more speed. I run ubunut by itself. the 1201N comes with win7 and I used it for a while but I stick with ubuntu. I now have mu SSD running and done a new clean install and everything is working alright for me. I have an 1015 for work purpose. Win7 pro installed on that one and it runs great with programming software and so on...I usual upgrade the HDD and memory to give it more to work with. always works for me and they never let me down.
