I'm running the Jackalope beta on my 14" R60. Things are progressing nicely, but I'm having an issue with VLC. When I got to watch a movie two boxes pop up, one with the movie and one with the controls. Is there a way to make them one Windows like it is Windows?

Secondly, I've asked this here before, but is there a way to get rid of the tooltips that pop up when you mouse over an object? When I asked this a few years ago you could get rid of some of them, but not all. Has there been any progress on this issue? Thanks for any help.

    1. Stop using VLC if you can, use SMPlayer. Thank me later.

    2. What exactly are you mousing over?

    2. I saw this over on an Ubuntu forum, for the panel at least you can go to
    gconf-editor > apps > panel > global > untick tooltips enabled.
You would probably have to restart the panel to notice the changes.

Apparently not until the bug is fixed in the 1.0 version of VLC.

    Good Luck..

Why is SMPlayer better? I like VLC.

That's the one I used before, but it doesn't get all of them. Thanks for the replies.

I'm not sure, but you might like it better than VLC. You might not like it at all, I'll let you be the judge of that though.

I vouch for SMPlayer as well. It's by far the best MPlayer frontend and UI that I've seen so far. The only disadvantage I find in it is that it's written in Qt, but then again so is VLC. Overall, I've found SMPlayer to be much cleaner and more reliable than VLC. All you need to do is make sure you have all the right MPlayer codecs and you have just as much ubiquity.

As with all things, your preference is your own.

I ran into the same issue with VLC as you did. I also ran into an audio issue that was fixed when I switched from using OSS to PulseAudio.

I got SMPlayer installed, but I don't have the right codec because my Mp4 playback is messed up.

Anyone get the ThinkPad center scroll thing working? I could do it in Ibex, but can't seem to get it working in Jaunty.

I also can't get my printer, which I could also do in Ibex. It's a Samsung LaserJet hooked to a Belkin Print Server. I used to select AppSocket/HP Jet Direct and plug in the IP, but when I get to the driver part it won't let me move forward. Thanks for any help and for the replies so far.

I usually use VLC cause that's what I used in windows

Every version of Mplayer I've found was just poorly layed out and ugly.

VLC has abysmal support for xv and other video acceleration under Linux, so your videos typically look like crap as compared to being played under mplayer (including smplayer), especially fast-motion video.

As for your mp4 playback, make sure you enable the medibuntu repository and then apt-get install the x264, ffmpeg, mplayer, libdvdcss2 and w64codecs packages (or w32codecs if you're using a 32bit version, but I don't know why you'd do that).

With the center-scroll thing, I think Jaunty is going through some issues with touchpads. The Elantech touchpad on my laptop at home doesn't work at all under Jaunty currently.

Bungalo Bill: mplayer's GUI may not be pretty, but... you're watching a video. The video is the important part, and it works much better under mplayer on Linux than it does with VLC.

I got the x264, ffmpeg, and mplayer installed, but got an error message when trying to install the libdvdcss2 and w32 codecs. I've not really had any problems playing videos in VLC. I'm just playing Mp4 videos coded in Handbrake, but I didn't really like the separate window in VLC.

As far as the trackpoint scroll, I don't mind it doesn't work. The scroll on the touchpad does. I was just curious as to why it doesn't work now. Thanks for the replies.

To install w32codecs and libdvdcss2 you need to enable the medibuntu repository.

I got medibuntu repositories enabled and all the codecs install x264, ffmpeg, libdvdcss2 and w32codecs installed correctly I think, but it's still not working as it should. When I open a Mp4 file with SMPlayer, there's sort of a gray flim over the screen. Usually when it fixes itself after a few seconds. If I try to jump around the file or adjust the volume, it gets all messed. It usually corrects itself when the camera angle shifts. VLC is a little better, but not much.
