I went out and got a new laptop, one of the vaio's fz series, and put archlinux on it. For the most part it went smoothly and I'm down to the last two issues. The most important is that when I plugin headphones, they don't work and sound continues to come out of the speakers. I tried it with the Ubuntu live CD too. The result of lspcd |grep Audio is
    Code:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

What's the version of the kernel? Does Fedora 8 have a newer kernel than the Arch and Ubuntu distros?

2.6.23.1 for Fedora 8, 2.6.22 for Ubuntu Gutsy, 2.6.22.1 for Arch 2007.08 and 2.6.23.8 for Arch current

Reasons: what version of Arch do you have?
