I don't think ubuntu is detecting my onboard wireless adaptor. It works fine in Windows 7. I have a spare 3com USB wireless adaptor lying around and when i plug that in I can get internet connection. Any help?

try plugging in your wired NIC and doing an update through Ubuntu Software Update, then restart and go to System/Administration/Hardware drivers. then you should be able to select the Broadcom STA Wireless driver

that;s what I had to do to get my wireless NIC working on my xps 1340

Sorry I have no idea what NIC means. Is Ubuntu Software Update the one that installs regular security updates and patches? If so I have already done that and it says my system is up to date. There is nothing under hardware drivers menu. It says there are no propriety drivers or something similar.

    NIC - network interface card

hmm that worked for me on my XPS.

does the studio 15 have a way of turning on/off the wireless card?

There is a function key for radio on/off.

make sure the wireless card is actually on. It should come up in the hardware drivers if everything is updated.
