Once I've installed the new kernel (2.6.24-23) on by xubuntu 8.04 I'm not able to detect and use wlan and sound cards while with old kernel I had no problems...

    Did you compile it yourself?

Hi, if you compiled your wifi and sound devices to your previous kernel by yourself (means you haven't had them 'out of box' working) then you have to recompile those drivers for new kernel again.
You can avoid this by using dkms (dynamic kernel module support).
Simply, your new kernel probably doesnt know how to handle those things...

No, I('ve just installed the new kernel version by apt-get.
I've then checked that some modules are not present while whith the older kernel were.

The new kernal you got didn't have your stuff enabled for whatever reason. You either need to roll back your kernal or recompile the one you're using, enabling the modules you need.

    You could just reinstall alsa
(what you need for sound) and find out what your wifi is and add them both.

It could be a configuration error, or a module error. Check in /lib/modules. There should be a folder with the same name as your current kernel.

    I also did it.
The new kernel has several less folders than the old one.

I'm about to install Arch... so I don't know if try to resolve the issue or not...

before you do that.. its always good to try the find out what the problem is.. so that :
    1. that is how you learn
    2. if you encounter the problem again you would know what to do

first as someone suggested .. try using the last working kernel. you can do this by restarting your computer and pressing esc key on your keyboard just before grub loads, grub would now display a list of kernel for your computer. choose the older or the last one that worked for you. if it works and all goes well then you can make that default using a graphical tool called start up manager which can be installed from synaptic

I'm just using the old kernel and I've also uninstalled the new one.
With the current kernel wlan and sound are ok.

stick to it then, if it arent broken. dont fix it. beside hope you dont have the prerelease or backport repo enabled.. doing that would always put you at the bleeding edge of packages and that might not be very productive in the end.
