Hey all I just installed Ubuntu 8.04 and am loving it. Unfortunately I tried to download Wine, as well as my graphic card and other files but for some reason when the downloader opens it never really goes through nor does it actually start. I have a good internet connection whenever I am downloading. What could I do to fix this? Thanks in advance :D

    Why 8.04?
    Ubuntu 8.10 has been released.

Could you give us a better description of your problems? Do you mean that the update window disappears whenever you try to run it?

And why can't you install 8.10? Does the installer die out on you?

8.04 is LTS, while I'd agree with these questions if it wasn't, let's focus on the actual problem here people.

can we get the output of 'sudo apt-get install wine' in a terminal? (found from applications -> accessories -> terminal)

I tried the guide to reset and when i hit reload the downloader comes up but the download is always stuck at 0%. Meaning there is no actual information being sent in but yet i have good internet connection.

Have you tried another download location in " Software Sources", as seen on the Ubuntugeek page from Telkwa's link?
    Maybe ftp instead of http?

How long do you wait? The *buntu updater has been known to take over an hour to scan the repos.

Nero, please explain further. Do you mean Windows downloads fine, but Ubuntu doesn't?

It's not clear to me whether you mean that Ubuntu can't connect at all, or you can't get the repositories to open up to you.

Does Firefox work for you in Ubuntu?

Are you connected directly to your modem or thru a router? A router solves many problems with ISP's like Comcast that want to see a Windows PC on the receiving end.

Is Ubuntu on its own PC, or are you dual-booting?

Here's an old post I collected that might help. If nothing else, you might want to post your sources.list and we can check it against ours...

Telkwa, Windows does download fine but ubuntu doesnt. I am dual-booting. Firefox works perfectly in Ubuntu. I am connected through a wireless router in my school. Others in my dorm can download but I can't.

Oh, a WIRELESS router. Go into Windows side, Device Manager, tell us exactly how Windows identifies your wireless adapter.
Betcha it's a Broadcom or Atheros.

Wait a minute - Firefox connects in Ubuntu? But you can't get to Synaptic? Sheesh

Try doing something from terminal. Let's see, what would be a harmless thing to try downloading?

I just downloaded k9copy from the terminal a few moments ago. Here's the exact command you can copy/paste into the terminal-

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install k9copy
If you get errors, copy/paste them into a reply, OK?
