I was trying to install Ubuntu x64 on my Inspiron 1501. I believe there is an AMD patch regarding this but I thought i'd check here first. When I first tried to install 9.04 I got a error message that said something regarding my BIOS.

I was able to install 9.04 but then the screen went blank so I did a forced shutdown via the power button. After that I was able to get into Ubuntu but when I went to do a system update it gave me 15 error messages as to why system manager updater failed.

    Any ideas ? :)

p.s. I'm not even sure if I should have installed x32 instead as all I have is the x64 version. The laptop uses the AMDTK53 CPU.

The TK53 is a 64-bit Athlon X2 so you'd probably be better off on 64-bit Ubuntu.

Not sure about the error with the BIOS without the specific error message... same for the updating problem.

Some of the info here might be helpful:

    Good luck :)

Did the LiveCD work? The black screen haunted me in Ubuntu. LOL. The guide posted should help.

Did you download and burned in ISO image your Ubuntu 9.04 from its direct website or from other mirrors?

Try copying the live CD ISO to a USB stick using win netbootin. Boot from the USB stick. Select livecd (use without changing). During the ubuntu logo screen with the orange bar, pull out the USB stick, count to three and pput it back in.

What are the exact specs and BIOS version does your Inspiron have? I have the same model, with a Turion Mk-36, 1GB RAM, 60GB HDD, everything works fine.

-should the netbootin be also installed in the usb together with the iso image in order for it to proceed with the installation upon notebook or pc boot-up? I'm kinda confused on using netbootin... :(
